Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

I'm just going to say it because others are too polite. Many of the posters on here are, to put it mildly, unworldly. They are also seeking self worthiness and congratulation by trying to be inclusive and what they think is tolerant. But the world doesnt exist in this context; I would say that even women who have holidayed in Morocco or Egypt and ventured outside the walls of their AI hotel would have an insight into the vast difference in attitude and culture which cannot simply be reconciled with kindness and tolerance. Attitudes and treatment to women and girls, self control around other people's property and a inbuilt drive to get anything available are not something you can luft from poorly educated, third world Islamic countries and place in leafy Sussex. It is not possible. I say this as someone who has lived and worked in Islamic countries for 27 years and have a great deal of respect for many aspects of the way society works. But if you think you are seen as as valuable, pure or worthwhile as a Muslim woman who is obedient and repressed by these men you are welcoming, you are wrong. Even woth travel and great education, the basis of their upbringing and culture is running their their veins. Now take a bunch of uneducated men who were brought up on folk law and fear of Hell and you really are in deep shit.

If these places are all so abhorrent to you why did you spend 27 years living and working there?

Up until recently you’d get the same posters saying it wasn’t necessary, and how bad people were to suggest they needed to be taught.

But now Labour have released the pamphlet and they have newfound support for it do you think it’s enough to stop the crimes?

Edited

I think education works yes.

Does it 100% irradiate crime in society? No.

I think this is it

People who talk about the availability of free condoms and consensual sex on this thread are just completely ignoring the assaults because they don’t believe it’s happened

Which is really staggering when you look at the amount of court news there is about it.

I am one of the posters who has posted about free condoms and consent etc.

In my case, my very first post on this thread acknowledged that some asylum seekers have committed terrible crimes. So I do not deny that some asylum seekers have committed sexual assault, rape and murder. I have seen no denial from anyone else about that fact.

So which posters are you referring to? At least be specific so posters have the opportunity to defend themselves against such serious and unpleasant accusations. It is only fair.

speaking of buses

I noticed a few posters talking about how there was nowhere for these people to go.

Believe me, they will be given free bus travel out of the area. Along with the free visits by doctors and so on. A GP doing home visits - imagine!

So hold on, do you want them to be locked up and have doctors on site, or travel to doctors outside?

Jerrybalanitis · 21/08/2026 19:42

I havent lived in those countries but I have certainly experienced the culture. I have lived in moderate, rich countries with education for all. Islam itself is not the issue. But when you grow up in the mountains and don't have access to education, you cannot be a member of society overnight. Nowhere did i say I found it abhorrent. But thank you for immediately jumping in and proving my point.

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 19:43

@Switchnow "If people had just shut up about hotels this wouldn’t be happening in leafy villages, where arguably the risk might be but certainly will feel heightened because of the absence of anything at all to do"

I wasn't out protesting about the hotels because I had the experience before it all kicked off (so no one was protesting actually). The hotel that was such a big problem for me was closed by the time the protest kicked off in other areas. There were a couple opening in leafy villages at that time though? In Sussex? I suspect you just didn't know about them. Not the big one in Crowborough - smaller ones.

The hotel protests have a legitimate grievance. It was never the intention to just get them moved elsewhere. Because people move, as I have, and a constant game of the government moving them around just means we're all more likely to bump into them everywhere

I am going to speak for the protesters when I say - we just don't want them and if they have to be here, they need to be detained in their facility.

this smacks of divide and conquer kind of territory - you think you can divide people by pointing to us and saying "it's this person's fault that you now have it in your area". This won't work. We're human beings. We go to lots of places for work and all kinds of other reasons and we move around. We visit other parts of the country. Nobody was trying to spread the problem around. At one point I was unfortunate enough to live in an area with them And travel to an area with them for work reasons... and then they opened one up relatively near to my Parents!

And there will be HMOs everywhere you go. The hotels were targeted for protesting because otherwise you see what you saw in Thetford.

But wait... someone does want to spread the problem around ... there is one person who is absolutely committed to doing this... Andy Burnham.

They can't gaslight your way out of this one. They spent years playing that game. And look where we ended up.

Got rid of a leader and brought Mahmood in for hardline policies.

I guess if that’s how you see it.

I want neither. Theres no room and no money and it deprived genuine people, both citizens and refugees from getting access to basic services.

I think a lot of men could do with being reminded about this. I notice that reports of domestic violence were up by 20% over the World Cup.

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12098/13566371/world-cup-2026-domestic-abuse-reports-reached-record-high-in-uk-with-major-increase-in-incidents-around-england-games

You’re doing whataboutery there. Having home grown abusers does not cancel out the increased risk of importing extra ones from abroad.

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 19:48

@Switchnow "In the UK we live in a culture where rape is more or less decriminalised, given conviction rates"

if you think it's decriminalised here, why are you not thinking about the countries where it isn't even a crime on paper?

BillieWiper · 21/08/2026 19:49

MaturingCheeseball · 21/08/2026 18:52

Eh? It’s xenophobic to think that women are equal to men? Oh, right…

No I didn't think or say that?! It was about the notion the barracks used to have plenty of young men and presumably it wasn't an issue.

dreamingofgoodhair · 21/08/2026 19:50

Switchnow · 21/08/2026 18:14

I find it highly unlikely that all the men in Piddington will be at the bus stop. But even if they were, the most dangerous person to someone’s DD is still any unrelated man known to the household. Sad but true. But as I said, I didn’t leave my precious DD’s hanging around bus stops, barracks or otherwise, so I didn’t need to calculate which type of man was more of a risk when she was out in the street. Treat them all as equally dangerous.

Of course they won’t all be at the bus stop but even 10 of them would be intimidating to a young girl. Have we learnt nothing from Rochdale and the grooming gangs ?

I’m a bit confused - are you a hotel protestor or not?

Tbh I was thinking more of the media and the politicians and commentators who whipped it all up, rather than the protestors themselves. But it’s a bit short sighted of any of the above to think that protesting about hotels was going to result in changes to international law meaning asylum seekers were ‘sent away’ or some such. The movement of people in irregular ways is an issue across Europe, and if you look across the world you can see why. It’s not as simple as ‘send them back’ and - guess what? - they’re human beings too, and as you rightly say, humans move around to live and work and make the best of our one and only life.

If anything the idea of England saying ‘not us’ is the archetype of NIMBYism. There is no world in which we are ‘not going to take them’ while also remaining trading and political partners with our allies. Anyone promising that is lying. So we need to find constructive ways to deal with the problem. The EU we’re looking at third country investment and redirection. Sort of Rwanda but, y’know, legal. I think that could work. But the idea that you can just magically prevent people moving around to make their life, that’s for the birds.

ETA: I see you edited. Yes, I did know about the smaller ones. There’s one close to me. The fact they received minimal coverage tells you a lot.

Switchnow · 21/08/2026 19:36

You understand that men from ‘different cultures’ aren’t universally dangerous to women right? It’s true that in places like Afghanistan women’s rights have been decimated and some men take advantage of this. But just like here, not all men follow what the law says. In the UK we live in a culture where rape is more or less decriminalised, given conviction rates. Do you imagine therefore that every British man is a danger? Maybe you do. Wise to be cautious but god let’s not live in fear of everyone.

So because British men don't all follow the law, let's let some more in, and those with different values, and swamp our quiet villages with them to boot?

And it's not a case of them not following the law. There are no laws in some of those countries to say - for example - don't have sex with children under 16. In many of the Islamic ones, the laws state the opposite. For example, Afghanistan legalised child marriage in May, stating her silence = consent. Islam refers to non muslim women as trash to be used for sexual pleasure (paraphrasing). These are men brought up with very different values.

And if you landed in Afghanistan and were told 'women are not equal', would you believe it, or would you just carry on knowing they are?

Look up crime rates per demographic. Ask yourself why the Ministry of Justice is trying to keep them hidden (coverage this week).

You are spending a whole lot of time ignoring and arguing for the extra risks to our girls and to us. I'm not engaging further with you.

Queenncat · 21/08/2026 19:59

The above are stories that came up in a google search. there many many more examples, sadly. 😞

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 19:59

@Switchnow i'm not someone who goes to protest no

I lived near one in 2016, it closed at some point during lockdown, got replaced by another down the road. it was awful but there weren't any protests because it was a much smaller issue. That one the new one, was then closed 2023 before the protests kicked off.

I only know two people who have physically protested in real life - possibly three if you count a guy I have only met once. None of them are saying not in my backyard. They are actively saying no across the board.

You might think it's stupid, but some of us feel very strongly about this. Simply shrugging our shoulders and saying "oh well, can't do anything about it "won't get us anywhere.

Denmark and Sweden are making an effort to address this. If enough pressure is put on the government here, then they might do something about it too.

It really doesn’t, but unfortunately this is an attitude from some ethnic minority men who see white British women as not marriage material. I remember hearing it from Greek Cypriot boys at school.
