AIBU to Hope that disposable barbecues are banned

I live in an area where we have had wildfires caused by a disposable barbecue. It has been devastating to the wildlife not to mention the danger and unpleasantness for the firefighters and residents. Our public bbqs have an enclosed gas flame so is legal during fireban season. The flame is also on a timer so shuts off after about 15 minutes.

A lot of people might ignore the fire ban in suburbia but I drew the line at lighting my Weber for the turkey on Christmas morning when we were expecting 43 degrees. I thought that would be asking the fire brigade for breakfast.

We have some near us too.

But they don't stop fires. Next door was nearly burnt down a couple of years ago after a normal bbq where a spark landed in a tree and shouldered for a couple of hours before being banned into flame hours later

People aren't exactly using local cafes and restaurants if they are bringing a bloody barbecue with them, so I doubt it will "kill off" the local town!

We’ve used them at home. Very small garden and nowhere to store a proper bbq plus coals so they’ve been very useful for us.
I haven’t used them in a public space though - not sure I could be bothered - but for my tiny garden a disposable one has been lovely now and then.

Shitty, ignorant people leave at the beach with sand over the top. Burns animal feet or people. Found many tosed into sand dunes, some humans are disgusting.

Their use is banned in parks round here anyway. A BBQ isn't a human right.

Def agree. I work in a coop in a touristy area, just outside a national park. We haven't sold them for years due to being close to the national park.

But you don't need a barbecue at all.

You can buy small reusable ones for less than £10 people will just use those and leave them

And, while we're on the subject, can I just say how increasingly pissed off I am at the reporting of wildfires where 'no casualties have been reported'. No human casualties, maybe. But, for fucks sake, there are billions of mammals, birds and invertebrates being lost. Human life is not the only life on this planet.

Signed. I caused a fire on my own property with one which was only prevented from becoming very serious and affecting neighbouring properties due to the prompt action of our fantastic local retained firefighters. Not my finest hour.

Someone might actually do that, but I suppose it will be fewer of those left behind.

Why are people so irresponsible?

Well people leave tents, camping equipment, cool boxes etc behind. Why? Because they are lazy.

indeed. I read a report on the devastation wildfires in France and officials were saying the vast majority were started by human activity either deliberately or by accident.

I was at the beach in a hot and dry South of France earlier this month and there were signs everywhere in three languages asking people not to smoke and if they did put cigarette butts in the sand buckets provided. Yet still there were people discarding cigarettes on the ground.
