AIBU to Hope that disposable barbecues are banned

I live in an area where we have had wildfires caused by a disposable barbecue. It has been devastating to the wildlife not to mention the danger and unpleasantness for the firefighters and residents. Sadly, the sorts of people who use them irresponsibly are also just the sort of idiots to just build a fire and cause similar problems or burn things they shouldn't like sand dune fencing.

I can remember buying one about 25 years ago when I was 16 and then realising we were left with a burning hot tray, we put it out with water and bread to cool it 🤨

Realised it was a very stupid idea.

Bloody awful things.

And they produce horrible food. The grill is so close to the coals, everything is either just black and sooty (before the charcoal is ready) , burnt black, or if as thick as a chicken leg, burnt black outside and raw in because the charcoal burned out so soon.

I'm sorry what? People go to beach towns for all sort of reasons. Wny on earth would banning disposible BBQs stop people from.going to the seaside?

I've never really understood BBQs anyway, it's 2026, we have safe, temperature controlled, electric ovens, we don't need to cook on a tray of hot coals like savages.

Horrible things, last time I was on the beach there were 5 or 6 families all using disposable BBQ's in a small area causing it to be all smoky. I dread to think what they all did with them afterwards as they stay hot for ages. I'd love to see them banned, there's loads of other food to eat at the beach.

I don't have a garden but I can survive, thrive and be perfectly happy without cooking burgers on a day out. Disposable BBQ's cause wildfires. Wildfires are absolutely horrific. They burn animals to death, endanger human life and property and take a huge amount of resources to put out. It only takes one small spark to start a wildfire. One small spark that you might not even notice. The National Fire Chiefs Council has asked people not to use them in open spaces, parks and the countryside. And yet people are still arguing the fucking toss about it as if a their lives depended on having a BBQ.

There are some public outside places that have fixed built in barbecues for public use.

That seems like a good compromise for those that don’t have outdoor space.

Having a bbq on a beach is completely antisocial behaviour.

A few years ago, several retailers, including my former employer stopped selling disposable BBQs due to the hot dry weather. Why haven’t they done that this year with the same weather?

Disposable BBQs make people feel they can BBQ where they want to. No public park, bar one, in Leicestershire allows BBQs but seen evidence of this through scorch marks on grass and the litter the lowlifes leave behind.

The only park you can have a disposable BBQ in a Leicestershire park is Bede Park on their bbq area. Very anti social behaviour happens there

Hyperbole is not your friend.

I've been waking with a headache and sore throat for weeks because of all the moor fires near here. We need more funding for patrols, more education, and a ban on these bbqs. It's been absolutely hideous in combination with all the heat.

It’s not hyperbole. It’s the truth. Any noise at all is stated to be antisocial - music on a beach, a BBQ, having a pint, all very normal things that people don’t really mind!

If they so wish, surely? You can’t force them to sign their names to a petition if they don’t support the cause.

Maybe your standards for good manners and socially acceptable behaviour are low?

It's not about "idiots" not using them properly. It's about using something that is a fire hazard. Fire brigades and the National Fire Council has asked people not to use them - and that means everyone. They've asked that for a very, very good reason. But you obviously think you know better. Anything involving fire in this heat automatically makes people fuckwits, no matter how smart they think they are. Honestly, a section of the human race has become like whiny arsed, spoilt teenagers. I want a burger and sod the consequences. It is so, so pathetic.

No one needs to BBQ at the beach - most beach towns will have a number of places selling hot takeaway food if you must eat on the beach - reduce fire risk AND support the local economy.
