AIBU to Hope that disposable barbecues are banned

I live in an area where we have had wildfires caused by a disposable barbecue. It has been devastating to the wildlife not to mention the danger and unpleasantness for the firefighters and residents. Signed. Those bloody things are definitely an environmental hazard, but also potentially a health hazard, you can’t cook meat properly on those. I know quite a few people that got food poisoning using disposable bbqs.

I think making your own "disposable bbq" out of a tin tray and charcoal is close to trivial.

People will just start selling "metal foil trays" and mini bags of charcoal separately. Or starting open fires that would probably be an even worse fire hazard.

IMO they should just up the consequences for anyone caught starting fires that get out of control.

I do a lot for the environment, generally, and try to avoid creating waste, but I do use disposable bbqs about twice a year to do some grilled veggies in the garden and marshmallows for my sons. We don’t eat meat and bbq so rarely it isn’t worth buying a whole bbq unit (plus we don’t have space for one plus charcoal etc)
I live in an area with a forest park and I don’t think banning disposable bbqs would help with fires anyway as most are just people making bonfires in the woods (even though they’re banned here)

Center Parcs have a special disposal system with metal recycling bins for the ones used there (only type allowed and only on the brick stand the provide)

Yanbu. And there needs to be draconian penalties for dropping cigarette litter.

I hope not, because we find them really useful as a base for keeping the barbecue chimney off the patio if we need more charcoal for a barbecue. Could get a cheap baking rack with feet and a foil tray which fits, but the instant barbecues are ready out of the box.

It's not just wildfires. There have been incidents where they have been left on beaches, covered by sand, and people in bare feet have walked on them and suffered horrific burns. It would be fine if all people could be trusted to use them sensibly, but they can't and don't.

Signed. I cut my foot open digging my toes in to the sand as some bastard had buried one very close to the surface. I was lucky it wasn't still hot too.

Nobody needs to BBQ outside their gardens and it won't ruin anyone's life if they can't. It's a first world problem at the highest, most hedonistic level. Anyone who thinks that a having a burger is worth putting firemen's lives at risk and burning wild animals to death needs urgent psychiatric help. Needless to say I've signed the petition.

There are a lot of over privileged people on here. Hefty fines for not disposing properly/causing damage yes. Banning them no.

Agreed, they could add it to their planned legislation on loud fireworks too (and add in garden bonfires while they are at it).

Why does anyone need to use a disposable BBQ? It's hardly a question of privilege. If you think they are a human right, lobby for the type they have in Australia.

I can't understand the attraction of hot sand on a hot day anyway, but adding in the risk of burning yourself really badly is madness. Or your dog's feet.

Many people don’t have gardens. Why shouldn’t they be able to go to a park or a beach for a bbq.
