To ask if you'd sign petition to ban XL bullies?

On the back of another thread.

Most fatal dog attacks in the UK have something in common: the breeds involved, largely XL bullies.

These dogs can weigh as much as 50-60 kg (115-135lbs roughly). Before anyone says "it's not the breed it's the owner" - in that case why do statistics clearly show it is the breeds? Why are there no fatal dog attacks involving labradors, golden retrievers, husky dogs? Even German shepherds.

There's a petition to ban them: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/618243

Most likely better for the dogs and everyone around them.

signed!

I won't sign this because ALL dogs are potentially dangerous, even small ones that don't typically attack. The problem with this petition is that it implies only huge dogs can kill. If there's a petition out there to ban ownership of any dog (except, perhaps, police dogs and assistance dogs etc) I'll happily sign it.

No2coming · 11/10/2022 08:50

Signed!

sandytooth · 11/10/2022 08:52

Please excuse my ignorance- Is that what the specific bread is called? XL Bullies? Or XL just the size like with jumpers?

This is such a tiresome argument. When was the last time a poorly trained Yorkshire Terrier savaged a person to death?

Done

Signed
This post will probably be moved to the petitions board though because I don't think they are allowed on the other boards

Yes. Maybe a ban goes too far, but it would make sense where children in the family are under 5. Difficult if you already have the dog when you get pregnant though.

SharpLily · 11/10/2022 08:57

Previous breed banning exercises have not resulted in a reduction in deaths and attacks so I think it's obvious that this would be completely pointless. Instead I'd look for more regulation in dog ownership so that not just anyone can pick up just any old dog without any sense of responsibility.

And hidden away so nobody ever sees it.

The truth is that any dog can attack.
Some dogs can do far more damage than others, but any dog can be dangerous.
Why are some breeds in the news more than others? Draw a venn diagram of irresponsible people who are neglectful or abusive and people who like pit bulls, akitas and other breeds that are tough looking and have a reputation for being aggressive and right there in the middle is the reason some breeds kill more people than others

Frequency · 11/10/2022 09:04

No, I won't sign. These dogs are not a breed, they are a mix of various bull breeds and quite possibly a few other breeds. It would be impossible to legislate properly and our government don't have a good track record of sensible breed legislation. The BSL they have in place atm is based on a set of measurements that dozens and dozens of mixed breeds could meet without having an ounce of pitbull terrier in them. Hundreds of innocent, well-behaved and loving family pets have been killed under this bullshit legislation and it has done precisely nothing to reduce the number of dog attack fatalities in the UK. Banning specific breeds will do nothing to help the issue because the problem lies at the other end of the lead. The thugs who buy and train these dogs to be aggressive will only move on to another breed once these are banned.

I would sign a petition calling for better education around dog ownership, welfare and training.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 11/10/2022 09:08

I’ll sign this!! One came charging up to me yesterday, I had my 10 month old in the pram, I just said “oh hello” but he had a stance that made me very uneasy, the owner was calling him and he (shock) wasn’t listening, if the dog wanted to go for us, he would of. The charming owner then starts calling out that I’m behaving like a psycho (all I said was hello) - this all happened on a school ground at lunch time!

underneaththeash · 11/10/2022 09:19

I've signed it. Cane Corsos should be banned as well. Absolutely no need to have a dog that large.

I'd also bring in the need to have a licence for any dog weighing over a certain amount.

Newcatbrowntail · 11/10/2022 09:22

Signed, I’ve seen a dog lock onto another dog, it was horrible, so glad it wasn’t a child.

MissingNashville · 11/10/2022 09:24

Shame we can’t ban the breeders from sharing the planet with us too. Never met one I’ve thought had anything to offer the world in real life. What you see of them on tiktok really is what they are.

thesecretshame · 11/10/2022 09:27

Nope. As someone who has seen the aftermath of injuries done by a chi to a small child (bites/injuries to the face and scarring) - it has demonstrated to me that all dogs have the potential.

Banning breeds is a useless, because people are always the problem - always.

Pugdogmom · 11/10/2022 09:38

Not signing, as any dog can bite, but as a dog owner/lover, I would bring back Licensing for dogs and compulsory training for dogs, regulate breeding more for dogs health and temperament, and make it harder for eejits to get a dog.

EbbyEbs · 11/10/2022 09:41

I will sign it but I think American bulldogs should be banned also.

I wish people would do one with the “any breed can be dangerous, even Yorkshire terriers!” Arguments … when I yorkie rips someone apart and then the news starts filling up with deadly yorkie attack stories then you will have a point 🙄

WhatisanODP · 11/10/2022 09:41

I’ve signed.

too many fatal attacks. I don’t usually sign any petitions so it makes up for one of you non signers 🤣

EbbyEbs · 11/10/2022 09:44

The link says “American Bullies” … no such breed.

They at least need to make it reflect an actual breed 🙄

MrsRoyCropper · 11/10/2022 09:45

Signed. My daughter is a dog groomer and had to call an XL Bully’s owner to collect him as his sheer strength meant she couldn’t control him and his aggression terrified her and her assistant, as well as the other dogs in that day. The argument that all dogs can cause harm is so tired, with this breed there is absolutely no way they can be managed, even the owner struggled with him.

nestofhill · 11/10/2022 09:45

I think I signed this already, linked on the other thread. Should possibly copy it into petitions (though it's a quiet area) in case this gets deleted, but hopefully it won't be.

I understand this banning won't do much, and what a sensible poster on that thread said about weight being a better guide (paraphrasing) presumably to include crossbreeds created to get around bans. But I think this would be a good start for everything else needing to be done to regulate the more dangerous (in the wrong hands) breeds.

nestofhill · 11/10/2022 09:46

@MrsRoyCropper
I'd never heard of the XL, but one of the most recent deaths was one who had turned on its owner, back in June this year I think.
