To ask if you'd sign petition to ban XL bullies?

On the back of another thread.

Most fatal dog attacks in the UK have something in common: the breeds involved, largely XL bullies.

These dogs can weigh as much as 50-60 kg (115-135lbs roughly). Before anyone says "it's not the breed it's the owner" - in that case why do statistics clearly show it is the breeds? Why are there no fatal dog attacks involving labradors, golden retrievers, husky dogs? Even German shepherds.

There's a petition to ban them: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/618243

Most likely better for the dogs and everyone around them.

Apparently it weighed 14 stone!

Signed!

Never heard of these dogs, but I am happy to sign any petition that bans massive or strong and powerful dangerous killer dogs. (And yes I KNOW it's not the fault of the dogs themselves.)

Off to sign now.

eveoha · 11/10/2022 10:02

Yes and also one to cull the ‘owners’ ☘️

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 11/10/2022 10:03

So this is one then. A type of bulldog I believe...

Looks fairly harmless, but I guess as they're so strong and beefy with big powerful jaws, that they are deadly if they turn a bit nasty!

😬 Yep!

Evenstar · 11/10/2022 10:12

Signed, one charged at me and my three dogs in the park the other day, he seemed friendly enough but the sheer size of him was a danger to people and other dogs. The owner was totally ineffectual, if he had been aggressive she couldn’t have stopped him.

I also saw one at my vets which was there to be put down, as it had seriously attacked it’s owner, she told me she had four small children at home, that was a near miss for a child death. As in many cases with these dogs it had been passed on as an adult from another home.

Floralnomad · 11/10/2022 10:13

Signed , these poor dogs are unfortunately the new ‘pit bull’ and are owned by the same types of people who don’t train them to do anything other than be aggressive. You only need to look at the fad for cropping ears to see what type of people are interested in this breed .

Kentgirl2525 · 11/10/2022 10:14

Signed! 👍

miceonabranch · 11/10/2022 10:16

A woman in Liverpool was killed by five of these recently. I think she was a breeder.

They're trophy dogs kept by usually inadequate men who want to appear tough 🙄 the breeders on YouTube can barely string a sentence together and are obviously not the brightest people to be breeding and selling these nasty things. I watched one video where one of his charges bit his leg and he was crying like a baby.

Signed the petition a few days ago.

I won't sign this because ALL dogs are potentially dangerous, even small ones that don't typically attack. The problem with this petition is that it implies only huge dogs can kill. If there's a petition out there to ban ownership of any dog (except, perhaps, police dogs and assistance dogs etc) I'll happily sign it.

You have to start somewhere.

Cassillero · 11/10/2022 10:16

It's a drug dealer breed. If your petition was successful they'd just move on to another powerful breed of which there are many.

Yes. Maybe a ban goes too far, but it would make sense where children in the family are under 5. Difficult if you already have the dog when you get pregnant though.

Not really all that difficult, you just have to choose whether your child is more important to you than your dog or vice versa and put one or the other up for adoption.

Someone shared this on my fb, absolute divs breeding these dogs and selling them on to god knows who.

I would also like to see licences brought in for dog ownership.

I agree. I think dog licensing and breeding regulation would be a much better idea.

Happily Signed

I’ll sign this!! One came charging up to me yesterday, I had my 10 month old in the pram, I just said “oh hello” but he had a stance that made me very uneasy, the owner was calling him and he (shock) wasn’t listening, if the dog wanted to go for us, he would of. The charming owner then starts calling out that I’m behaving like a psycho (all I said was hello) - this all happened on a school ground at lunch time!

But nothing happened?

I would completely agree with you that a dog shouldn't be off the lead at school pick up, and not in the playground. But from the sounds of it, the dog just came to look at you and you, rather than ignore it, were engaging with it, so you got the dogs attention but now you're cross. Why did you talk to it if you didn't want it near you?

I get the general drift but it’s like another language! Also suggesting them as an Xmas present - the mind boggles.

knightsinwhitesatin · 11/10/2022 11:09

Signed. These big dogs terrify me, I am on edge now whenever I walk my small dog with my toddler and baby. There is just no need for them to exist, to have such big strong animals designed for killing, around public realms.
I am also very much for licences and legislation to regulate breeding, but banning these huge, powerful breeds would be a good start.

Frequency · 11/10/2022 12:12

Same. The only bit I understood was xmas present. This is the issue these dogs have. It's not the breed it's the halfwits breeding and buying them who are the problem. You ban this breed they'll move on to another.

You only have to look at the history of fatal dog attacks to see the pattern. It started with rottweilers and dobes, then they moved on to pitbulls as they were more compact and easier to bundle into the back of an Escort XR3i. Staffies were next on the list once pit bulls were banned followed by a brief dalliance with the northern breeds off the back of Game of Thrones and now they've moved on to these crossbreeds.

Fatbabyfeet · 11/10/2022 12:31

Signed.

Those who argue that “any dog” can kill are being completely moronic. In many cases these XL bullies are heavier than an adult man, sheer solid muscle. A child doesn’t stand a chance of survival in the event of an attack. No different to a bloody loaded gun.

I’d prefer bringing back licensing for all dogs but something needs to be done about these dogs now.

Lovebeingamummy2 · 11/10/2022 13:36

Signed!

JOFFCV · 11/10/2022 13:43

I can remember this happening

Dog walker apologises after his ‘Staffie’ mauls Beagle to death but says ‘they’re gentle with my toddler daughter’

Then shows a picture of the toddler lying on the dog. I have two gentler dog breeds but I would never leave a child with them or let them lie all over them.
