To ask if you'd sign petition to ban XL bullies?

On the back of another thread.

Most fatal dog attacks in the UK have something in common: the breeds involved, largely XL bullies.

These dogs can weigh as much as 50-60 kg (115-135lbs roughly). Before anyone says "it's not the breed it's the owner" - in that case why do statistics clearly show it is the breeds? Why are there no fatal dog attacks involving labradors, golden retrievers, husky dogs? Even German shepherds.

There's a petition to ban them: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/618243

Most likely better for the dogs and everyone around them.

Are you for real ? If a normal breed attacks it’s easy to get them off. Try that with a 60kg killing machine. Ask the first responders what they think when they show up from a bull breed attack. I have a friend that was first responder to a staff attack that killed a 2 year old. The dog was owned by a policeman so apparently was trained right. It got into the next doors garden and killed a child. You mongs that stick up for this breed are the problem as well as the monster dog

Spoon17 · 27/06/2023 19:59

Very well said.

Spoon17 · 27/06/2023 20:01

It doesn’t go far enough. So kids over 5 can survive a bull breed attack. Read again. They need banning

arghtriffid · 27/06/2023 20:14

Where can I sign? I saw a 10 year with her mum walking a monster of a dog today. The girl should not have been walking the dog. It should have been muzzled in public. We need some laws and restrictions in place now.

The petition owner closed the petition early without coming close to gaining enough signatures. It was poorly worded anyway so wouldn't have helped much.

You could start your own petition.

As a xl bully owner!! I think this is an absolute JOKE!! it’s not down to the dogs it’s down to the owners!
ALL DOGS can be dangerous! I’ve been out with my boy and had a small dog yapping, barking and going for him. And my boy just sat there (was outside a school) and yet I had the owner complaining that my dog was scaring hers! Not ONCE did my xl make a noise back to the small dog. Because he is TRAINED! I have 2 children and small nephews and he is amazing with them.

newnamethanks · 11/09/2023 08:16

What are you going to do on the day you take him to a school and one of the kids upsets him? He is amazing with your small nephews and children? You, and ignorant owners like you, are the problem. If and when he's out of control, which can occur with any dog no matter how well trained, you won't be able to control him or prevent his doing harm. Utterly irresponsible complacency.

talkingirl · 11/09/2023 23:10

Have seen 6ft plus fit strong man struggle to control american xl bully- no chance against these animals- if it were your child?

May1988 · 14/09/2023 17:59

Absolutely! Signed! I love dogs but people shouldn't be able to own or breed dogs that have been bred for fighting, have such massive strong ripping jaw power, and can overpower basically ANY human when spooked.
I had an encounter with one of these a month ago with my now 12 week old in a carrier and I have never been so terrified.
It spotted us (probably the baby) and stared, then started trying to get to us, growling, barking, rearing up. Luckily on a lead BUT took TWO grown men to restrain it. It was absolutely taller than me on hind legs. It was pure muscle. If it hadn't been on a lead we would have had no chance. I have been left traumatised and too scared to walk with my children around local area without my partner there now. It is non-sensical to compare these dogs to most others. I've been growled at by staffies at home visits for my job but I always had the sense that worst they could do was bite my legs and never felt true life threatening fear. An Alsatian could do some damage but doesn't have the jaw power, bite force, ability to clamp on the head and neck that XL Bully Breeds do. This one I encountered could have easily got my head and neck, as well as baby in carrier.
These dogs don't belong in our communities. I know a couple of owners have been killed by them but the people who will suffer the most are innocent bystanders, children and other dogs.

Theunamedcat · 14/09/2023 18:08

It's a lazy argument that there is no such thing as a bad dog only bad owners its like saying there is no such thing as a bad person coming from good parents we know they come from somewhere and sometimes it is the bloody dog (or person)

The petition closed ages ago. There's another here created after some attacks in August. One of the women in the newspaper article had been trying to save her two dogs.
A new thread might be better though

Nope, my dogs/myself have by labs/retrievers/frenchies/JRs/other small breeds.
Better breeding rules/stopping back yard breeders need to be introduced

May1988 · 14/09/2023 20:17

Sorry, realised was an old one after commenting! Signed the new one! 🤣

I took it to mean you were about to sign! 😀

Shadowcind14 · 16/09/2023 01:59

You say about no other fatal attacks regarding other breeds however, there have been babies killed by jack russells, kids mauled by labs, collies, people killed by huskies... you can't single out XL bullies because any dog is dangerous in the wrong hands. The dogs don't need to be banned. Laws should be bought in in regards to licensing breeders, dog licenses to own any dog, liabilty insurance. It's the breeding and the over breeding that is the problem. It is greed of breeders that are only doing it for the money because the breed is sort after currently.

George7438 · 16/09/2023 04:29

Your point of before you say isn’t valid what so ever as if you do research you will find a lot of other breeds mauling people one of which being a dachshund where this attack was fatal this year and others such as Rottweilers, staffies, mastiff and sorry to put this for you but German shepherd have attacked and killed try research before you make comments!

George7438 · 16/09/2023 04:33

Your pathetic if a dogs trained well, a 10 year old can more than happily walk a bigger dog what do u want all larger dogs to be banned u joke of a human

They walk among us

Jnewlands84 · 16/09/2023 10:59

I don't agree with you on this one. I have 3 types of dogs that live with me. I have a husky x malamute, xl bully x rottweiler and a pug. All my dogs are very loving and affectionate. I have read up on all the breeds I own and the statistics on it all are amazing. You say you haven't heard about huskys attacking people. I have and they do some serious damage too when they want too. All dogs have the ability to attack. I got my husky from a rescue shelter and when I first got him he had been abused and was quite an aggressive dog. After owning and showing him the love and affection he deserves he has become the most friendly dog you will ever meet. Dont judge the dog, judge the owner.

Thelnebriati · 16/09/2023 11:24

Your dogs are loving and affectionate with you; don't confuse loving them with training them, and don't mistake how placid they are at home with how safe they are around other people.

Julx37 · 17/09/2023 01:50

Deaths caused:
Cocker spaniel - 59 (reports up until 2015)
Rottweiler - 45 (up until 2018)
German shephard - 25 (up until 2014)
Mixed breeds - 17 (up until 2018)
XL bullies - 15 (up until 2018)
Mastiff - 14 (up until 2018)
Siberian Huskies - 13 (up until 2018)
Labradors - 9 (up until 2018)
Golden Retrievers - 3 (up until 2018)
Chihuahuas - 2 (up until 2018)

There are over dog breeds that have also caused deaths, but the point is that even a small dog like a chihuahua has been reported to have caused fatality.

Here are top 10 breeds that are most common to bite:
1 - Pitbull
2 - Rottweiler
3 - German Shepherd
4 - Chihuahuas
5 - Any bully (bulldog) breeds
6 - Terriers
7 - Dalmatians
8 - Cocker spaniel
9 - Tosa Inu
10 - Doberman

Pibulls and staffs were originally bred as nanny dogs, American XL bullies were bred as companions in the 1990s as they have a low prey-drive.
Chihuahuas were bred for rodent hunting as it was there natural instinct and Cocker spaniels were bred for bird hunting.

The moral of this post, is that it is the owners fault and not the breeds. Society has advanced to ignoring the animals nature and using it for its aesthetics and assets. It's the same with children, we are not born racist, homophobic, sexist, etc. We are brought up around beliefs which mold us into the people we become. Rather then putting a ban on the breed and leading it into extinction, the government should fund shelters which are crowded, they should take an interest into rehab and rehoming schemes etc. To get the dogs out of the situation that is putting a bad name on the breed.

nestofhill · 17/09/2023 06:45

The XL bully was only introduced to the UK a few years ago. 🤔
What rubbish and misleading 'statistics' @Julx37 Not comparative at all.

That's the only moral of the story, as you put it, there.

May1988 · 17/09/2023 07:40

What is important for statistics is context

XL bullies started breeding in UK around 2015 but didn't start gaining any popularity until covid hit. So considering we have only really had these dogs around since 2019, we have stats like "XL bullies have killed 14 people since 2021 and have attacked 351 people in 2023 so far. That is 43% of all reported dog attacks"
And "since 2021 XL bullies have been responsible for 70% of attacks on other dogs".
It looks like the statistics you shared for fatal dog attacks by breed were TOTAL deaths caused over a long reporting period. XLs have caused a large percentage of the total fatalities from dogs, and general attacks in this country since they were introduced in past few years.
