AIBU to share with you UsforThem. It is a group of mums who are campaigning to send children back to school as normal with no restrictions. They can be found on FB and Twitter #UsforThem. There is also a link to sign the petition on FB

"Iam one of the vulnerable... I am not old and I don’t look sick. I take precautions suitable for my risk and believe the world shouldn’t stop for me. That is not disablist."

Would you have a child coming home to you from school every day? What precautions can you take if that's the case?
I'm not looking for the world to stop, I'm looking for it to be a measured slow return with lots and lots of precautions...not all back full time.

I’ve got a yr 1 child at school and a primary school teacher Dh coming home to me every day. The benefits to my much happier son and my husband having a stable job (I’m looking at redundancy) much outweigh the risks. They shower & change when they get in, number of cases round here aren’t that high. And frankly it is what it is, my family have to get on with it - yours might make a different choice.

Bully for your aunt juggler. She could obviously afford to go,

Most of us can’t.

My primary school teacher DH can’t afford to resign; I am vulnerable and also looking at redundancy. I still think the world doesn’t/shouldn’t stop and schools need to open. Does that count?

"They closedeverythingto save the NHS, to flatten the curve. They put shielding in place for vulnerable people. Schools didn't closefor them."
Yes, but if you think it through, they closed everything so as people didnt get it, so they recognised it was a necessary thing to do. It they hadnt closed schools many many more people would have got it. That's no different now.

Arguably we have no idea whether that is true!

"And they've been abused, left to go hungry, abandoned by schools in some cases, isolated. Seems a great trade off doesn't it?"

Only the minority. The majority are not abused, not hungry, but safe and happy. We cant put the majority at risk, and the wider public at risk for the minority.

"I want them to go back because children need school. They need education, they need routine, they need friends, they need normality. Their parents need to work to keep the roof over their heads and put food on the table."
And that's fine, but we also need to safeguard the community and I dont think going back full time is the answer. I've just walked past our local school, it's been shut 2 days, so clearly the majority of parents round me has said no thankyou, it's too soon.

Bollss · 02/07/2020 14:20

Except you want decisions based on the minority of shielders as opposed to the majority of healthy people?

Right. Plenty of schools are open, though.

"Part time schooling is not good enough. It creates an even bigger education gap, it's problematic for working parents, it creates further "bubble" related issues (where do you think the kids are who aren't in school?

It doesnt need to be all kids in full time . It's only been 3 months. Yes, Easter would be fine for me, with online learning till then. High school kids are perfectly fine learning at home on line. Their parents can still work. This is why Boris allowed younger kids back, so their parents can work if they want to.

Oh well I'm glad Easter would be fine for you. I mean never mind everyone else eh.

Just like you want decisions based on just kids going to school, when they can always catch up.
I havent been talking about just sheilders, but the clinically vulnerable too. Theres bloody millions of them. Not such a minority as you think. Then there is anyone over 40. So again not such a minority. I know when you are young you think of anyone over 40 as really old and out of the picture, but that's a massive chunk of society. Again you have "othered us". Calling us a minority. It's not a minority. Not at all.

formerbabe · 02/07/2020 14:27

Not abused, fed and safe are the absolute bare minimum and do not necessarily equate to happiness.

I mean a reasonably independent child could theoretically be kept safe in an empty room...free from abuse and plenty of food left at the door. They'd be bloody miserable though.

Surely we want more for our children than just physical safety, no abuse and food on the table.

How much of a risk of death is your average 41 year old at then? Go on....
TabbyMumz · 02/07/2020 14:29

The difference is I'm not petitioning for Easter, I know that wont happen, that's just what I'd like You however are petitioning for September everything as normal full time (which is just ridiculous) so you are the one saying bugger everyone else, not me.

TabbyMumz · 02/07/2020 14:31

Are you locking your children in a bare room former babe? Oh dear. Mine are happy with lockdown, never been happier, as have millions of others I'm sure.

darkcaramel · 02/07/2020 14:33

That is a bit flippant tbh tabby

MarshaBradyo · 02/07/2020 14:36

Tabby will you deregister?

I do think it’s been hard on dc to be closed off from school. Teens especially.

I'm petitioning for ft school, I am happy with the guidance that's been released today.
TabbyMumz · 02/07/2020 14:37

"How much of a risk of death is your average 41 year old at then? Go on...."

Well as people on here have been saying how safe anyone under 40 is, you can only presume that the people seriously ill and dying with it are over 40, cant you,! In terms of my family, as I've already said, if my child goes to school and brings covid home my partner is in the "likely to die", category, I'm in high risk caregory, and both my kids have conditions that put them at high risk. That enough for you? If you want figures, go look yourself.

TabbyMumz · 02/07/2020 14:38

Also on top of that we live in a high risk area with lots of spikes of covid occurring.

I'm not bothered whether you personally send your kids to school or not, you need to make the best decision for your family, of course.

To insinuate being over 40 means sudden death is a bit silly.

TabbyMumz · 02/07/2020 14:40

"I'm petitioning for ft school, I am happy with the guidance that's been released today."
Yes you are and that's what many people on here dont agree with. What does the guidance say? All squashed in like a tin of beans I guess.

No your not bothered, that's my point. But if the rules are that I have to, then you will have got your own little selfish way, wont you.

People on here, I've found, don't accurately represent real life.

All in, ft, with measures (hand washing, staggered starts, bubbles, testing etc)
