Friends from Derby say mirrow !
I always thought it was a localism,
same as borrow me, morrve, (mauve)
knocking on the back door when its propped wide open and we shout ‘come in’
seeyasavvy to alert a post luncheon visit and
heyup me ducks’ as an informal greeting

Mirrow is indeed a word of you speak in certain dialects.

Aw, you made me a bit homesick for the town of my childhood! I've been a soft southerner since I was 21, but mirrow took me straight back! My mum would have killed me and my brother had we said it though.

It's a bit of a grim accent, really. I can see why she really didn't want us to adopt it fully. I still hate that grandmas are called Nannar up there. My brother's still there and his step kids called their grandma Nannar. It made me cringe!

I miss 'eyoop me duck' though.

DoloresODonovan · 12/01/2025 00:07

discrete ! as an alternative spelling for discreet which has a different meaning

raggedbottomjeans · 12/01/2025 00:43

Also what's with all the people seemingly confused by off/of? I'm seeing people consistently use them the wrong way round so it's not just a typo.

Off - opposite to on
Of - has some connection to something

Wendolino · 12/01/2025 00:47

Classee · 11/01/2025 16:29

So many people seem to say bias these days "I'm not bias" "I'm bias" etc 😖

Yes I've noticed that and it's very annoying!

Wendolino · 12/01/2025 00:50

I've just remembered one I saw recently- someone was asking another if they were "lack toast and told her aunt. You know, can't eat dairy".

healthybychristmas · 12/01/2025 01:01

MyDeepZebra · 10/01/2025 22:19

Another MN one I'd forgotten...the poster who was very worried about her Virgina.

There was also the poster recently who was furious that the Midwives turned up ANNOUNCED at her house. Of course, they were "unannounced".

But I think she corrected that immediately didn't she?

Mum2So · 12/01/2025 02:21

Acrobatic duck (aromatic duck).

TellYourSugargliderISaidHi · 12/01/2025 04:28

Oh the one I see all the time that’s so annoying is weary instead of wary. I’m weary of it!

COPPER3 · 12/01/2025 08:06

Classics from the (deceased) MIL...
"Did you see them 'stil o ettes' (stilettos) she was wearing...she couldn't walk in 'em".
"I bought one of them fancy 'geeshas' (quiche) for me tea".
"Ee's the 'splitting image' of..."

As I type, I can hear her voice...😳

MyDeepZebra · 12/01/2025 08:29

healthybychristmas · 12/01/2025 01:01

No. She referred to it again in her OP and didn't correct it until someone pointed it out.

A local cafe serves Launch Time Specials

Ilovemyshed · 12/01/2025 09:46

@raggedbottomjeans
Exactly. My post said using wandering when it should be wondering. In am perfectly well aware that wandering is a word with a different meaning.

So many time I have seen something along the lines of "I am wandering if someone can help me ..." where I envisage someone aimlessly ambling around looking for a solution Grin

Rocket salad?

Parentswriting · 12/01/2025 10:35

Our local pub has a wine list that describes each wine, and some of them have deep flavours of berries and plumbs!

Must hark back to when water was turned into wine!

Do they have a great depth of flavour?

ChessieFL · 12/01/2025 10:41

Went to a pub for lunch several years ago and on the menu were sausages made with a number of different species. We asked what species were included and they couldn’t tell us…
(Was meant to say spices).

I've heard them called, and self identify as, Mamar.

And to vs too.

Yep, both are used in the East Midlands. I've never heard either anywhere else though.

SlimeSuspect · 12/01/2025 11:07

The time my dyslexic younger brother (who had never seen the word ‘obese’ written down) described his ex MIL as “a beast”

NellyTimes · 12/01/2025 11:26

Recently at work someone had written that the daughter has "power of eternity" for her mother.

Loose instead of lose is another one I see a lot. How do they think you spell loose? Looose?!

DerekFaker · 12/01/2025 11:42

raggedbottomjeans · 11/01/2025 20:50

Depends on usage. I've never seen wandering used incorrectly myself.

1)Wandering - aimlessly move around
2)Wondering - consider something

I often see 2 used in place of 1 because of the way they're pronounced.

1)is pronounced "wondering" and
2)is pronounced "wundering"

I see it quite frequently. Wondering when it should be wandering.

Also: weary instead of wary.

That’s hilarious (but also slightly sinister!)

Oh there was a post shortly after Christmas which stated that the poster was enjoying a 'week of work'. Presumably meant 'week OFF work'!
