I've just read a thread title here and realised I hate "grab" when used instead of many other verbs such as "get" or "buy".
To me someone suggesting they're going to "grab" some shoes during their lunch break sounds like they're off on a shoplifting spree.
Obviously, I know they're not going off to steal some shoes.
But why "grab" instead of "buy"?

I loathe "grab bags" of, eg crisps, too.

This is meant to denote speed apparently, personally I think it sounds aggressive -
anyone ‘grabbing’ crisps probably wouldn’t want to share them anyway.

DH and I are watching Rip Off Britain right now (recorded earlier today,) and one particular holiday company has confusing information in the terms and conditions.

DH turned around to me and said 'hmm they do like to boozbamble people.'

Straight face. Never even realised he had said it! 😆

To be fair, that's a good word that really should exist

That’s how I feel too

So-and-so "woofed" their food down instead of "wolfed".

Another one I see here a lot is "tow the line":
<heave> "Where do you want this line towed to?".

I saw someone on here once arguing, in all seriousness, that the expression “toe rag” for a rotten person is actually “tow rag”, referring to a dirty old rag you’d use to clean something you were towing 😆

Oh, I'm definitely having this one! 😆

So many people seem to say bias these days "I'm not bias" "I'm bias" etc 😖

It's Covent Garden now, not Convent, so she was incorrect.

I interesting fact though.

I agree.

I keep seeing ‘exasperate’ instead of ‘exacerbate.’ It’s to the point that I rarely see exacerbate used!

TheaBrandt · 11/01/2025 17:02

My lovely late grandmother always called Williams mother Princess Diane which cracked me up as a teen as somehow Diane is quite a different name to Diana!

There's no accounting for taste, is there? 😆

[It was so unexpected] it was a revaluation to me.

Wandering instead of wondering!

Depends on usage. I've never seen wandering used incorrectly myself.

1)Wandering - aimlessly move around
2)Wondering - consider something

I often see 2 used in place of 1 because of the way they're pronounced.

1)is pronounced "wondering" and
2)is pronounced "wundering"

I work with some intelligent people but loads of them write "reign it in" in reports rather than "rein it in".

Perhaps they had the same English teacher as me. I wrote one of those 'What I did at the weekend' things, and included my horse riding exploits. She put a red line through 'reins' and changed it to 'reigns'.

Reader, I kid you knot.

Oh yes, I've seen that - a dog wondering around in the street. I don't know what it's wondering about, or how anyone can know that it is.

I remember the first time I saw that — it was on here. A poster said she was ‘mortified’ at the death of someone she knew.

getahhtmapub · 11/01/2025 22:12

Someone in our local marketplace is selling 'De-stressed bar stools'

TheaBrandt · 11/01/2025 22:17

Agree the misuse of mortified irks. You’re mortified if you fall over in front of the Queen not when someone dies uneventfully.

Also misuse of wary /weary people seem to confuse. “I am weary of letting her take my son to the park after last time”
