Another American import that makes me want to bleach my eyes and ears and permanently damage those who use it, especially on chain pub and restaurant menus
I'm pissed. Well, I will be once I open the wine.
Pissed off as that's another import that creates a different scenario to that intended!

It's an added irritation that the foul stuff is creeping onto menus everywhere, not just as a meal but as a side or garnish.

My DM used to cook macaroni cheese as a meal back in the 1960s, so it's not that recent and I don't think it's an American import either.

I think the OP means calling macaroni cheese 'mac 'n cheese'.
Which I agree is a horrible Americanism. There are so many more creeping in now, I think because of youtube etc.

Crazyeight · 12/10/2024 15:57

Macaroni cheese is completely different to Americans 'mac 'n' cheese'. The latter is a synthetic orange goop of over cooked pasta and has never seen cheese.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/10/2024 16:09

Ah, in that case I concur! I hate the term "mac and cheese" as much as I hate "avocado toast".
It's "avocado on toast" people!

As @Crazyeight says, mac 'n' cheese is not macaroni cheese! But I'm not a huge fan of it even in its traditional form. I need a bit more than cheese to liven up pasta.

olderbutwiser · 12/10/2024 16:10

Please may I join your club, I eat Macaroni Cheese and Avocado on Toast.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 12/10/2024 16:15

I didn’t even know what it was until someone told me. I thought it was a cheeseburger. 🙁

Rewis · 12/10/2024 16:21

Love it! Hopefully we'll get one of those subway type mac n cheese restaursnts where you can make your own with different toppings. I think it is super fun word.

TentEntWenTyfOur · 12/10/2024 16:26

That doesn't bother me as much as finding the prices on a restaurant menu looking like this:

Mac 'n' cheese ................. 11.5

Yes!!! Mac n Cheese is plastic cheese fast food vs macaroni cheese with a proper cheese mix

TinaYouFatLard · 12/10/2024 18:22

Mac n cheese sets my teeth on edge. It’s bloody macaroni cheese!

Also, ‘new years’ - “what are you doing for new years?” 😡

You misunderstand; it's the term mac n cheese that's the import.
Yes, we've had macaroni cheese here for aeons!

I absolutely hate Mac n cheese . I don't even call it macaroni cheese but macaroni and cheese - more normal in my area of Scotland.

I always wonder if Americns adopt British words and phrases as much as we seem to have theirs imposed on us.

Macaroni cheese is a garnish??

Parsley is a garnish.

Macaroni cheese is warming and comforting.

It may be an American invention, I don't know, but If it is it's one of the few things they got right.

I have a theory.

If you call it ‘smashed’, the expectation is that it will be rough looking and customers won’t complain if the avo is slightly mushy and not perfectly sliced.

Hence smashed avo.

I went to a mac ‘n cheese restaurant in the US. They sold macaroni cheese. That’s all they sold.

No, not an American invention! My gripe is the increasing use of the term mac n cheese here!
