Another American import that makes me want to bleach my eyes and ears and permanently damage those who use it, especially on chain pub and restaurant menus
I'm pissed. Well, I will be once I open the wine.
Pissed off as that's another import that creates a different scenario to that intended!

Which bit of the chicken is it?

They are two roundish bits of the chicken that sit near the wishbone
Goujons are strips of chicken in batter or breadcrumbs

I think our (altogether better ) traditional name for the dish, ‘macaroni cheese’ follows the style used for many dishes, for example Steak Diane, Spaghetti Bolognaise etc.
They’re contractions of French or Italian culinary terms, (Steak à la Diane/façon Diane or Tagliatelle alla Bolognese).
Macaroni Cheese follows that convention, the execrable Mac’n’cheese does not, so it’s jarring.

@zeitweilig yeah it's so soggy. But I hate even the legit, posh version. As I hate pasta and cheesy sauce. I used to love tinned ravioli though! 🤣

I was partial to tinned ravioli too and there was a nice veggie version as well.

I add bacon to my macaroni and cheese and it's really nice. My daughter was a big Friends fan and one of the characters was having "Mac n cheese with cut up hot dogs" Of course, I was persuaded to make it and it was vile - even she admitted that and we still laugh about it 20 years later.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/10/2024 13:59

@zeitweilig ahhh, the veggie version is probably nicer actually. And those little sausages you got in tins of beans or spaghetti. I used to fish them out and eat them alone! 🤣

Annoyingly, the sausages heat up more slowly than the beans, so tricky to get it all to the right temperature for eating. One of my guilty pleasures though.

Even bloody Iceland is calling breadcrumbs chicken strips chicken tenders now

BobbyBiscuits · 13/10/2024 14:29

@MysteriousInspector just fish them out and heat them alone. Lol. Or just eat cold! Haha. I used to do that 🤣

MysteriousInspector · 13/10/2024 14:36

@BobbyBiscuits no,no,no, they must be eaten together!

BobbyBiscuits · 13/10/2024 15:29

@MysteriousInspector I know. My mum stopped buying them when she found I'd thrown the beans in the bin! 🤣

Mac and cheese is generally a side dish in the US. The addition of hot dogs (mainly a Midwestern thing, I believe) supposedly turns it into a main dish.

The best mac and cheese is the savory custard type popular in the Deep South.

Southern-Style Macaroni and Cheese

Two ingredients set this mac 'n cheese apart: grated onion and Worcestershire sauce; plus a whisk and pour sauce that doesn't require pre-cooking.

brbg2g · 13/10/2024 16:28

Its the casseroles for me. Chucking loads of frozen, jarred and tinned shit in an oven dish and calling it a casserole. Also the obsession with using tins of soup as sauce.

A green bean casserole. Green beans covered in a ton of chicken soup covered in cheese, baked and called a home cooked meal. Bizarre.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/10/2024 15:51

My DM used to cook macaroni cheese as a meal back in the 1960s, so it's not that recent and I don't think it's an American import either.

My mum made it in the 60s but it was always called macaroni cheese not mac'n'cheese.

MovingonupScotland · 13/10/2024 17:23

I do macaroni cheese with cauliflower and broccoli mixed in, whacked under the grill to go crispy. My kids love it. Proper cheese sauce made with flour, butter, milk and grated cheddar. Mac'n'cheese is plastic crap.

RaraRachael · 13/10/2024 17:27

When we were in ths US on holiday we wanted to cook easy meals from scratch in our apartment but found it almost impossible to get basic ingredients. All we could find were ready meals or I think they ate our a lot.

smashed avocado if you please. It always has to be 'smashed' for some inexplicable reason

We have a takeaway here called phatsmash something. It irritates me from just the name.

I'm with you. But.worse than smashed avocado is when they just call it avo.

Wink

It's absolutely disgusting which doesn't help. I just remember it being called 'macaroni cheese' and coming from a tin. It was served out of vats at primary school dinners and I still shudder at the thought and the smell.
Now the spelling is bothering me as well. 🤣

Tinned macaroni cheese is an abomination, I agree!
School macaroni cheese always tasted as if they had thripown the cheese in from the next county; essentially macaroni in white sauce.
But home-made, with a truckle's worth of v mature cheddar, seasoning and cheesey breadcrumbs on top...
