So is it pendantic to be very annoyed when DD and others insist on pronouncing FEBRUARY incorrectly?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:18

I am SICK and TIRED of saying

"Feb - rooo - erry. NOT Feb-yery."

If DD does it again - and I swear she is now doing it deliberately to wind me up - I am going to have to disown her.

towesr?

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2008 11:08

According to wikipedia, and other sources, the pronounciation your DD is using is normal, but disputed. More normal in North America than here, but still ...

TheFallenMadonna · 07/02/2008 11:09

I hate February.

And library.

Have a slight 'r' problem.

They are killers.

OLDroot · 07/02/2008 11:10

feb u ary is more usual as a pronociation surely?

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 11:10

Oh I give up

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:13

NQC - yes, but Wikipedia is a pile of bobbins which anyone can edit! It's most useful for its links to articles which have actually been edited and checked...

I have been known to dispute the "common=accurate" argument.

i say wedd'ns-day. same reason I say feb-roo-ary. It's all down to Miss Creek, a terrifying, harsh, posh teacher at my primary school, who used to tell us off for having Yorkshire accents (this was in Leeds).

All this reminds me. The other night I watched that channel 4 show "1983: edge of apocalypse" - something like that. Anyway, the woman doing the voiceover kept pronouncing nuclear as new-killer rather than new-clear. I almost wrote a letter (as you do). It did my brain in. Very distracting in a show about the threat of nuclear war. ho hum. back to shed.

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:14

Yes, it was Gina McKee, who otherwise has a delightful voice.

loving the fact the thread title has a typo. Tee hee.

IorekByrnison · 07/02/2008 11:15

UQD perhaps you need to edit the February entry on Wikipedia.

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:15

Please change it, tech! Pleeeeeease!

Didn't some study show wikipedia to have fewer errors than Encyclopaedia Britannica?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:16

Yes, a study written on Wikipedia

people who pronounce all the syllable in vegetable - veg-et-ibb-bul- need to be twatted round the head with a large parsnip.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2008 11:17

UD - but English is based on common=accurate, I'm afraid. If you want to avoid that argument, you have to start speaking French or German or some other language that has a governing body and rules.

Hallgerda · 07/02/2008 11:17

Tut, tut... should you be introducing your DD to the idea that this month has a brewery in it?

Tech · 07/02/2008 11:17

UQD, I saw at the end that it was Gina McKee, whose work I've always quite admired. I felt a little disappointed. I did wonder if they just didn't dare to tell her to re-record bits - cos she's a "movie star". And no, we aren't changing the title

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2008 11:18

And this 'bad' pronunciation is in the dictionaries too.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/02/2008 11:18

Ah.

Now, coming back to the common/correct thing...

Isn't that how it works in language? Things become 'correct' through widespread usage.

Unless you're French perhaps.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2008 11:19

Presumably pendantic has something to do with pendants?

CaptainCod · 07/02/2008 11:19

i say febreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2008 11:19
UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:21

NQC, you are about half an hour late with your joke about my typing error. I have even taken the piss out if it myself!

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 11:21

I say Feb'ry, Wens'dy

I don't think I could actually say Feb-ru-ary without sounding pissed.

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:21
