So is it pendantic to be very annoyed when DD and others insist on pronouncing FEBRUARY incorrectly?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:18

I am SICK and TIRED of saying

"Feb - rooo - erry. NOT Feb-yery."

If DD does it again - and I swear she is now doing it deliberately to wind me up - I am going to have to disown her.

what is pendantic?

cornsilk · 07/02/2008 10:23

It is a stupid word.

cornsilk · 07/02/2008 10:24

I mean February is stupid - not pedantic.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2008 10:25

I'm pretty sure Feb-yery is a normal pronunciation, in some accents/dialects.

(But pendantic isn't a normal spelling, afaik.)

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:46

aaaaagh

sorry about the header.

I DO know how to type "pedantic".

Please change it for me, someone!

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:47

No, Feb-yery is wrong.

It has an r in, which as far as I am aware is not optional!

How do you feel about Wednesday?

Weddensday? Wensday?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:51

It's obviously said "wensday". Is there a comparison? I don't really hear "weddens-day" anywhere.

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:52

This pendantic (sic) thread is hanging by a thread.

OP posts:
Vacua · 07/02/2008 10:52

you can't change it, it made me and probably others smile

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:54

Thing is, it was a genuine slip of the keyboard, whereas it now looks like a stupidity error of the sort which I DO NOT MAKE...

OP posts:
Whooosh · 07/02/2008 10:55

Fell the same way about sec re tary and lib ra ry....

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:56

"seck-a-try" makes my skin crawl, in the way "nuke-ular" does.

OP posts:
HuwEdwards · 07/02/2008 10:59

I agree with Cornsilk - it IS a stupid word, as far as spoken English is concerned, it's just not intuitive.

fryalot · 07/02/2008 11:00

UD - re: seckytry. Our local newsreader said this yesterday about the Home Secretary!!!!!

fryalot · 07/02/2008 11:00

(and I was very pendantic when I whinged to dp about it )

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 11:01

I am very partickleyar about this kind of thing.

I've been known, honestly, to wake up in a cold sweat about the possibility of having submitted work with a misplaced semi-colon so I wholehearted sympathise even while chuckling at your misfortune UQD

Vacua · 07/02/2008 11:03

arrrrghhhhhhh wholeheartedly disembowels self with a sharp bit of eggshell

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 11:03

dd says chimley (whilst I shriek at a level entirely disproportiante to the crime CHIMNEY!!!!!!!)

Vacua · 07/02/2008 11:04

and rocks back and forth at those rogue asterisks

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 11:05

oh fucking hell disproportionate

UQD - you have jinxed this entire thread to make spelling mistakes

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 11:05

mn towesr - please delete entire thread so we can start again

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 07/02/2008 11:05

How old is your DD?

IorekByrnison · 07/02/2008 11:05

dp says Weddensday. I've always found it weird.

I feel quite relaxed about what goes on between the b and the y of February. It's a nice onomatopoeic blustery sort of sound with or without a distinct "r" sound.
