So is it pendantic to be very annoyed when DD and others insist on pronouncing FEBRUARY incorrectly?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 10:18

I am SICK and TIRED of saying

"Feb - rooo - erry. NOT Feb-yery."

If DD does it again - and I swear she is now doing it deliberately to wind me up - I am going to have to disown her.

My ex's mum was from Norfolk. She used to say bootiful, like Bernard Matthews. I hated it.

I once drove down to somewhere near Derby to see a man about a dog.

The very first thing that he said to me saw 'Have a poo.' I thought he was some kind of perv and nearly walked out. Till it dawned on me that what he was saying was 'Have a pew', i.e. a seat.

(Debating whether to let people know this is/was GodzillasBumcheek)

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 13:53

Yes, in a devon accent news is noos. And beautiful, pronounced by my strongly wurzel accented gran, is budd-i-vurl.

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 13:54

hunker - "anymore" as well?

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 13:54

Why do Norfolk people have what sounds like a west country yokels accent when it's on the other side of the country, by the way?

UnquietDad · 07/02/2008 13:54

"alot" is appalling. I want to smack people who use it.

I was brought up saying Wensdy - and I was brought up posh.

Pecific for specific drives me mad. As do all the otehr examples on this thread - must get out more!

But wait til your dcs are older and start talking about the theo-saurus!

onebatmother · 07/02/2008 14:03

Ah, Seeker, I was just about to ask the day/dee question but I was too embarrassed busy with work.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2008 14:15

I think is you were raised posh, saying wensd'y, thursd'y etc sounds posh.

However if you were raised common (like me) it just sounds like lazy speaking!

onebatmother · 07/02/2008 14:18

you are right getorf.

Vacua · 07/02/2008 14:26

I do ALL those 'alot' 'anymore' 'evermore'

and wensdy and febyooerry

MyOtherPersonalityIsTheSaneOne · 07/02/2008 14:32

Did anyone else try the Brain Training thing in the Queen's voice - i did, it was hilarious Sorry, what were we talking about

Vacua · 07/02/2008 14:32

I also say anaTUHma instead of anathema

hunkermunker · 07/02/2008 15:03

anymore, yes, I knew there was another one (or is that a nother? ).

bohemianbint · 07/02/2008 15:07

It bothers me when people say "pacific" instead of "specific".

PippiCalzelunghe · 07/02/2008 15:11

don't know if said before but 'chimley' instead of 'chimney'... or is there's something a foreigner like me doesn't get?

bohemianbint · 07/02/2008 15:18

How about "kekkle" and "hospickle"?

Rife, in parts of Manchester, it makes me itchy.

IorekByrnison · 07/02/2008 16:24

shedule or skedule?

PippiCalzelunghe · 07/02/2008 16:28

educate me. 'isshoo' or 'issiu'?

IorekByrnison · 07/02/2008 16:31

I would say ishoo and tisshoo to avoid sounding like Brian Sewell

PippiCalzelunghe · 07/02/2008 16:34

that's how I say it but some news readers say the other way so started to doubt myself (who's brian sewell?), not that I'd like to sound like the queen mind
