(Incredibly childish) BBM sneakily makes part 3 thread and places Sandy's flag at the top for a second time.

(Flag is made from organic cotton and has been dry pailed and washed at 40C)

returnofrusmummy · 01/11/2008 09:34

PS ALL : who has a good routine with washable wipes??? I using wet wipes as cant seem to get into reusable.

FullMoonHowler · 01/11/2008 09:58

lollipop - yes, that's the night booster. (sorry, meant to send you the istructions thingy) for day, you'd only need the main soaker, for night I only add the small booster (the one that looks like a sanitary towel) to the main soaker, only used the night booster once so far, as don't realy need it.

Hi can I join too.
I have been sent here from post natal thread, as they got great advice from BBM.
I have recieved my trial nappy from little lambs today.

I am also wondering what else to try.
Do I wash this nappy a few times before I use it?
What do I wash it in?
What cycle?

Also do I soak the nappies or dry store till I wash.
If I soak then what do product do I use in the water.
I plan on using disposable liners, till I get into it and see how I get on.
sorry for all questions.
my ds is 10 weeks
I also have a dd at 20 months and had wanted to use cloth but dh wasnt keen.
Would it be too late to put her in reusables or not?

babyjjbaby · 01/11/2008 10:54

hi welcome to the world of washable nappies no1 yes u need to wash the nappies a few time b4 u use them bout 6 times but u don't need to dry them inbetween to wash u need half the recommended amount of washign powder i just do a 30 wash but alot of people do a rinse first but i don't know how to get my machien to do that i dry pail so just sluice nappy in toilet then put into nappy bucket i would say it would be worth trying reusables for ur dd as u will be able to use them on ur ds when he is older aswell

  1. That depends on a lot of things, budget, your drying facilities etc maybe if you give us an idea of those things you'll get lots of suggestions. 2)One pre-wash should be fine before you use it, two will be even better. The idea is just to remove any manufacturing residue from the nappy and fluff up the fibres a bit - like you would a new towel. A quick wash with your normal laundry will be fine as long as you don't use softner. Softner will decrease the absorbancy lots. Any cycle will do as long as the temperature doesn't exceed Little Lambs guidelines (on the label - think it is 60C for the cotton ones). I wash my dirty nappies at 40C in powder (bio or non-bio), what you do is up to you really - just not at a temperature any higher than the nappy label states and never use softener. 3)Either - dry pailing is lots easier! Most people do not soak - it isn't neccessary really as modern washing machines are very effective. 4)You could use a glug of white malt vinegar to keep them soft - sanitisers not required really. Some people soak in essential oils but I tend not to recommend that one. Dry pailing is the best way to go.
  2. It's never too late but you may find with a DD of that age you have to be careful what type of nappy you chose - I found it quite difficult to find trousers to fit my DD2 at that age that would go over her nappy unless I used a thinner fitting nappy such as a pocket nappy. Any nappy you use for her can be saved for your DS when he is old enough. I think you'd be best off starting with your DS first and seeing how you get on.

hth - probably a bit jumbled up - not had much sleep

returnofrusmummy · 01/11/2008 20:12

bbm can you give me rough idea of weight ranges for size 1 and 2 nappies. not sure where we are. rikkie small what weight and medium?? bamboozles? sandys??

Essie3 · 01/11/2008 20:18

Hi there, a quickie again!
Lollipop I use pop-ins, and there are matching modern baby wipes...I think I'm getting some for free for writing reviews! Might just buy some more, though.

As for your fleece, I was down our amazing local sewing shop, and they have LOADS of fleece. Will look for some cerise for you, but would you be interested in bright swirly patterns including cerise?? I saw some of that! It was quite cool, I thought.

Rusmum I have a v. simple technique with washable wipes. I cut up some muslins into 4s to make the wipes (Lollipop - they don't match, I feel your pain!). I brew up some chamomile tea (sometimes put a few drops of lavender in), and put all the folded muslins in a container - I use an Ikea 'tupperware' in London - and pour over the tea, they're wet wipes then.

In Wales, though, I use a pampers wipes dispenser I got free with Bounty (you can buy them) and wait for it....drum roll...
I MAKE THEM DISPENSE!!!

Life is so empty...

For out and about I use wetwipes. But I intend to use my new mb wipes, with this organic thing. But the organic thing is expensive I'm too scared to use it. 1 pump = £1, basically!

BigBadMouse · 01/11/2008 20:24

rusmummy

Motherease wraps...(Shamelessly c&p'd )

XS 6lb - 12lb (2.7kg - 5.5kg) Covers the same weight range as the small size but with a trimmer cut suitable for a smaller baby*.
Small 6lb - 12lb (2.7kg - 5.5kg)
Medium 10lb - 20lb (4.5kg - 9.1kg)
Medium/Large 20lb - 27lb (9.1kg - 12.3kg) A slimmer cut wrap, but taller in the rise, making it suitable for slimmer babies. However, if cost is an issue you could safely skip this size.
Large from 20lb (for chubbier babies) or 27lb (for slim babies) - 35lb (9.1/12.3kg - 15.9kg)
XL 35lb - 45lb (15.9kg - 20.5kg)

Bamboozles
Size 1 8-18lb in theory - in practice probably won't be absorbant enough for an 18lber, so if the size 2 fits move to that one for better absorbancy
Size 2 18lb - 35lb

Sandy's
XS 6-12lb
Sm 8 - 20lb
Lg 20 - 35lb

Little Lamb often just state 0-9 months and 9m plus but the actual weights are
Size 1 7-20lb
Size 2 20-38

any others?

wastingmyeducation · 01/11/2008 20:30

Think I need to buy the Medium/Large soon. He's about 15/16lb, but very long and there's less room in the rise for him already. We're only on the middle poppers. When we moved to Medium, he was still on the tightest waist setting, my little skinnymalink!
I'm also going to buy some more Bumbles for nightime. Shopping time!

xx

asur · 01/11/2008 21:20

Hi all, just thought I'd nip on here - I've been using reusables on my DC for 2.5yrs and love them... only skim read last page...

returnofrusmummy for wipes; I used to do the chamomile tea thing with DS1 but found it a bit long winded... Now, with DS3, I just have some cheap face cloths that I run under the tap, squeeze out excess then store in a box next to changing mat. Simple but works well. For out and about, I again get a wet facecloth but I put a bit of baby oil on it, fold it and put it in a sealable freezer bag which I then use to bring the dirty nappy/wipe home in. Cheap and cheerful

Can I ask advice now... Where is the best place to sell nappies? usednappies.co.uk never seems to be too busy. Am I best to put them on the for sale boards on MN? Is there anywhere else? Ta

babyjjbaby · 01/11/2008 21:27

yahoo nappie sboard looks good for selling nappies

asur · 01/11/2008 21:33

Thank you I always forget about yahoo groups even though I'm already a member of some (blame babybrain!!)

MatNanPlus · 01/11/2008 22:23

I made cream towelling squares 15x15 / 20x20cm and edged them with cotton patterned bias binding, they are popped into a sink of bubbles (baby bath) and then squeezed a little and sit in an open container in the changer, then they are rinsed when used, if come clean then a drop of BB & H2O and to the bottom of the container, if marked then into the soaking bucket - yes i used nasty chemmies .

When i go out i have the wipe in a baggie that the old nappy will also fit into.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 01/11/2008 22:23

Thankyou BMM I am just looking for a few varieties on for sale board to try out.
There is so much choice.
