College, Uni, OU or anything else. How's it going? The good the bad and the obscure.

Can I join in?

Even though it is my second year, it is my first year on campus and I've gone from a class of about 8 over the past two years to seminars with over 100 people in!

First day tomorrow!

JDBfangirl · 28/09/2008 22:55

The essay is "Why I chose a career in nursing" I've referenced the NMC code and a TV programme. Might find a book or some thing to reference too. It's really just to show you CAN reference properly.

My friend was diagnosed as dyslexic and he got provided with a (free) laptop and a little voice recorder for making notes... I'd say it was worth your while to be found to be dyslexic as you'd get more support from the uni.

Well Im on my first day and as you can see Im working hard, have been in the library since 9.45 on the internet haha, but I have got the books I need for my first modules while I am here so not a complete waste of a morning

well...meant to get some cleaning done this morning...but not much achieved...dh decided to fall asleep on the frickin sofa in the living room, which hampers the cleaning action just a bit....like hoovering is out of the question...honestly it really annoys me...
Also got a plumber in, as yesterday one of our pipes bust in teh bathroom....so, the plumber is here to fix that, and then I suppose we getter get onto the house insurance, as water leaked through the ceiling into the livingroom...sigh...just another thing that you just could do without, sigh...

JDB, we were told if we think we might have special needs then we should go to student services and we can get assessed....apparently it isn't uncommon for students being missed through their schoolyears, only to find at UNiversity they have been dyslexic all their lifes...quite shocking that somehting like that can be missed...

with teh references...obviously if that is what you used for your work then that is all you need to reference, I was just surprised....! BUt I suppose as it is a personal experience essay, there won't be much referencing....
OUr diagnostic Essay is : Discuss the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle while undertaking a course in Higher Education

(IT is not meant to be a personal experience, but taken from literature...)

FairLadyRantALot · 29/09/2008 11:44

Jofe, what ind of course are you doing?

nolonger, look at you being in the library...

Need to go there tomorrow, as dh is off work tomorrow aswell, so, be a good time to do some research towards my Essay....

jofeb04 · 29/09/2008 15:43

First day now over! (Ok, so been in the student union bar for a couple of hours!).

I'm doing Psychology/Social Welfare Joint Honours!

LollipopViolet · 29/09/2008 19:31

Had to give a group presentation on our film ideas this morning. Went OK, I think. Then taking photos this afternoon to learn about shot composition. 9AM start on Thursday, after 10am's all the other days we've done The roads round me get manic at that time so gonna have to leave at 7.45.

FairLadyRantALot · 29/09/2008 21:56

jofe, that sounds like a very intersteing degree....Psychology with something joint was another one I did look at....lol...
The choise is so endless, isn't it!

Lollipop, glad it went well!

Will have my first lessons tomorrow...I mean, proper lessons....just prepared my folder for the real study and rewritten the notes I have taken (i.e. clearer and all that, as it will be stuff that will be good to look at as and when....)

FairLadyRantALot · 29/09/2008 21:59

Oh, after realising that there will be some artsy bit to this course, I bought a massive pencilcase, and scissors, glue, coloured pencils and felttips and stuff....also bought a very mall case that will just hold my ballpens and a pencil, and sharperner and eraser...to save me rummaging about in the big one....lol....
also bought some dividors...will keep all 4 modules in one folder and just use the dividors and see how it goes like that....

My CRB came back today so I'm no longer provisionally a student nurse...it's all official so can get council tax exemption form and claim 25% of the CT! Woo hoo!

Have a study day tomorrow so shall write out essay, start planning ethics essay and probably do (more) ironing (with DVD on for motivation)

Welcome Jofeb04!

So is everyone else feelig the pressure yet? We have started proper lectures and have also begun our first two modules. We know what our first assignements are now and we had to do a presentation today on a condition (we got stroke) Its all getting very scary! I think I need a crash course in Powerpoint as never used it before. The amount of info we have to take in is mindblowing!

How is your essay going JDB? Congrats on the CRB check coming back.

How are you finsing OT now Fairlady?

Notalone · 30/09/2008 18:02

Sorry - should read finding

Notalone · 30/09/2008 19:18

PS - sorry Lollipop. Well done on the presentation and good luck with traffic tomorrow. Do you have far to go?
PPS- Fairlady - what are your first modules going to be? Our first two are Individual experiences of health and People and their environments

tammybear · 30/09/2008 21:43

Ooo feels like forever since I posted on here last! Lol.

I am so ill right now. Got cough, that is fun to have during lectures!, and a pounding headache.

I have to redo last week's homework as I misinterpreted it, tut, then I've got to find paintings of another artist, and crop different parts to it to come up with different meanings in this painting. Then I also have to find 4 photographs by the same photographer and discuss the lighting in them.

Urgh, why does my brain have to seize up now when I need it most? Lol.

Anyone else wondering how the hell we're suppose to get all this work done as well as looking after the kids and house?

Notalone · 30/09/2008 23:29

Tammybear - you have freshers flu. Everyone has it where I am at the moment too! I am also very worried about juggling everything and also feel a bit guilty that I don't have as much time as I used to to spend with DS. I know I am setting him a good example but he will be 10 when I finish and probably not wanting to spend time with his mum then

tammybear · 01/10/2008 10:05

Oh I know what you mean. DD is 5 at the moment, turning 6 soon, and I'm worried she's going to start thinking I'm neglecting her or something. But I've got 2 and a half days off during the week, so I'm praying I can get all my homework and studying as well as the usual housework and chores done (hoping for a miracle there! lol) so I can have the weekends free to spend as much time as I can with her. Though she's at her gran's this Saturday night so shall be making the most of that time too! Lol.

JDBfangirl · 01/10/2008 13:31

Finished my essay! Huzzah!Am doing the rounds then i'll grab lunch and get cracking on my ethics essay plan and maybe some more research.

I thought I was getting freshers flu but managed to see it off with a comb of a hot toddy, 2 paracetemol and a hot bath.

Still feel completely shattered. Have packaged dS to grannys so I can get some work done. I feel guilty on two counts. 1, I'm not spending an awful lot of time with DS and my mother in law is having to look after him at least three days a week which although she says she doesn't mind, I still feel guilty about, esp when i'm at home.

noonki · 01/10/2008 13:54

Ohh can I join in!

( i am doing second half of first year, did first bit last year)

last year was mental, I rang up in September to enquire about course for this year, they said they had a space and to start in two days time

it was bonkers! - (DS1 was 23 months, DS2 was 4 months) only two mornings a week but still mental,

I had to bring DS2 with me to a few lectures as had no childcare sorted, he got lots of attention though

how do you all get work done? -- I used to drive them until they were both asleep and then revise etc in the car!

FairLadyRantALot · 01/10/2008 14:51

noonki , what are you doing?

Notalone, we have 4 modules this year :
Understanding Occupational Beings, Personal and Proffessional Skills, Foundations for Practice and Human Health!
We had our first proper lectures yesterday all in Personal and Professional Skills....itr was very interesting and our Lecturers so far all seem really engaging and fun to listen to, etc...so, that is brilliant....because it makes it so much easier to learn and to listen, doesn't it....

I am still feeling a bit overwhelmed, but things are falling into place now, so, hopefully I will start to settle in and enjoy it
The UNiversity in general, and this course specifically seem to be very helpful, virtually aking us by the hand, which makes it less scary then it could have been....
Had a study day today, but haven't really done anyhting...however, I stayed on later yesterday to prepare and print out a few things, so, will not have a bad concsience
Tomorrow, as a one of we have only a halfday and I will stay on and first go to the Gym and then research articles, etc....for my Essay....once I have material that I can use, it should fall into place just how I will attack it, iykwim.... and by the end of next week I should have it written....that is what I am aiming for anyway.

Tammybear, sorry to hear you are unwell and that you have to redo the assignment....not what you need when unwell

As for teh Kids issue, I do worry that they will think I have no time whatsoever for them anymore....but, I know this will sound really horrible, I actually reallllly enjoy being away from them for a bit.... love them honestly, but they do drive me round the bend....well, and then there is my lurvely dh , that I could throttle a lot of the time, lol....he has really annoyed me the past few days....he only had 2 days off afer doing 6 nights, so, I know he was knackered, but he pretty much slept the past 2 days away....which is kinda shite....hohum (especially as he promised me to do teh ironing, and well, he only did half of that, which means I will have to do it tonight.....grrr...I know I am unreasonable, but, it still annoys me....

nolongeraworriedmummy · 01/10/2008 17:14

urgh I have freshers flu

FairLadyRantALot · 01/10/2008 17:45

I thought when people talked about "Freshers Flu" that they mean they were hungover/partied out from all those freshers do's, lol

LollipopViolet · 01/10/2008 19:55

Nope. I think it's where people bring all their regional germ variations to one place and those not immune get very, very ill?

FairLadyRantALot · 01/10/2008 19:59

I gathered, that....which was why I blushed at such silly thoughts...I mean, student -hungover ...who has ever heard of such thing

Notalone · 01/10/2008 20:25

Aw Tammy. Its so hard sometimes isn't it? I had to work on yet another presentation today so DS was left to his own devices like a neglected child. We have just spent 15 mins snuggling under a duvet in front of He Man and now he is off to bed. There is just no time anymore to do anything! Think it is worst cos my DS is an only. Is yours too Tammy?

I applaud you on finishing your essay JDB. Bet you feel a fantastic! I have just finished a presentation on Activity Analysis, read it back and think it is rubbish so may have to start again tomorrow. Luckily I have a study day tomorrow. Phew!

Welcome Noonki! You are brave doing this with babies! I just have to revise wherever I can really. On the train, before bed (fab time really as it all sinks in more - don't think DP agrees lol). What are you studying?

Fairlady - I am finding the lectures are really interesting too. We are doing interprofessional learning next week so will let you know how that goes. I know what you mena about kids driving you mad - when I was trying to study earlier DS was doing his dinosaur killing machine noises right outside the door and I wanted to throttle him lol. I know its just attention seeking though really bless him - guess I need to remember this is all quite new to him too. He keeps asking if I have play time and numeracy in my big school lol! I am the same with my DP too btw. He has a bad ankle and is due an MRI scan so yes it is pretty bad and he has a lot of pain. He can still manage to go out and see his friends but is unable to mop the kitchen floor meaning I need to do it in a minute. Men!!!

Am waiting for freshers flu. I have had a headache every night since starting uni but think it may be due to all the concentrating and not flu - well at least not yet anyway.

What happenned to Osmosis btw?
