Don't worry Knickers. nappies aren't the only issue with DP's aunt and her very strange ideas about parenting. Including the idea that giving BELLADONNA to a baby is a good idea. while refusing to give him the antibiotics his doctor prescribed. Poor kid has had perforated eardrum twice by age of 18 months FFS because she won't give him antibiotics. But BELLADONNA

Sorry completely off the point!

Essie3 · 26/08/2008 13:40

I don't like the way they look either, Ann. I think washables are so much cuter, and I often want to have DS in just his cute little nappy!

But yeah, disposables do smell bad. I think it's to do with the gel and things in them.

A TMI anecdote: after giving birth I was (obviously) using pads for a looooong time. After about 2 weeks, I swapped from the mattress type to Alldays (or whatever they're called). 2 things emerged: (1) I smelled worse, and (2) I developed nappy rash! Yes, me, an adult! It's the chemicals in them, apparently. GP told me to stop using anything, just, ahem, bleed into my knickers and change them regularly (I had worked out the changing bit myself, don't worry - slummy, but not that slummy!). So basically...switch to washables!!

Belladonna is a 'natural remedy' it's made from a highly toxic plant. It relieves pain in a similar sort of way to what heroine would - by making you too out of it to notice. It was used a lot in the 19th century. it is extremely unsafe - it's poisonous and very easy to overdose on, which is fatal! Actually if you've seen the movie Practical Magic, they accidentally kill the guy with belladonna.
Yes natural remedies can be good, but this is not one of them.

BlueberryBeret · 26/08/2008 14:00

If you give the homeopathic version of belladonna in the right amounts it reduces temperature. They are very small controlled amounts though.

I have used it when Flamechick had a raging temp but was throwing up calpol, she could keep the little sugar pills down.

AnnVan - Our gp rarely prescribes antibiotics for ear infections. I think the current thinking is that they are normally viral and antib won't help anyway but giving antibiotics out is causing them to be less effective and other problems.
I don't think mine have had antibiotics for ear infections for years, now. They have had burst eardrums with no ill-effects.

Isuppose used like that it's not a problem, but they weren't treating the ear infection, just reducing the pain. I do think that it's important to use common sense where things like this are concerned. The same woman also refuses to give her older DS his asthma pump. He's gasping for breath and she calmly says that they didn't bring the pump with them! Anyway - I've accidentally hijacked the thread! btw I think it would be really good to keep a Cloth Nappy club thread like this going - what does everyone else think??

HensMum · 26/08/2008 14:10

DS (10 months) has been in cloth pretty much since birth though we did use disposables until the cord stump fell off as his reusables rubbed it...plus it was all a bit much at the beginning and I think that washing nappies too would have done me in.
Anyway, he's in Cotton Bottoms mostly which I really like - quick to dry, not too bulky plus they were really cheap! I've also got a few Little Lambs which are OK but DS is a heavy wetter and they don't last long.
Plus we use a Minki Huggle and Ella's House Bumhugger at night, both of which have to be boosted... I did say he was a heavy wetter!
DS is learning to pull up at the moment and I've just discovered another advantage of reusables as they cushion his bum nicely when he falls back down.

juuule · 26/08/2008 14:12

If it's a viral ear infection, you can't treat it. It has to run its course. All you can do is treat the pain.

Silly about the inhaler, though, if he needs it.

BlueberryBeret · 26/08/2008 14:28

Yup, I'm flame

Agree with the viral ear infections, but the non-inhaler is wrong

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 26/08/2008 14:36

i have just been trying to work that one out lol - was that intentional - thanks anyway It makes sense now.

JoyS · 26/08/2008 15:14

oneloudbaby, Bummis super whisper wraps are best with prefolds imo. Or if you're just trifolding them, the mothercare smart nappy wraps are pretty good.

lollipopmother · 26/08/2008 15:15

Hello, just thought I'd join too because I've been trying to stay away from the nappy forum but it's been killing me! I am 38+5 but thoroughly addicted!

So far I have bough (all 'pre-washed' or used a couple of times only):

2 x Pink Totsbots (lush)
4 x Sandy's (lush)
5 x Kissaluvs (ok)
2 x Kiwi original (not that impressed)

I also have some 3 x airflow, 1 x rikki, 1 x Popolini (sp?) and 3 x (donated) cotton bottoms wraps.

I am absolutely dying for an excuse to by an Ella's House, I don't know why but I just want one! As it stands though I have reined myself in, although all of the nappies I've got so far have been complete bargains either off of MN or on ebay.

I have also decided on doing my own wipes, but although I've got the fleece and the flannels that I've decided to use, I haven't got round to doing anything with them (cutting them up!) yet.

lou222 · 26/08/2008 15:26

loving this thread and can't wait till i start using washable's so i can comment aswell.
my question is where do you find a nappy advisor??
does someone come round to your house and show you the different types?
i read somewhere about a trial of different ones with a deposit but can't find it now.
my little 2lb boy (now a whopping 4lb!) will hopefully be home from scbu in the next few weeks so i really want to get sorted .

wastingmyeducation · 26/08/2008 15:26

Knickers, I reckon a Yorkshire real nappy meet-up might be a good idea.

We had a leak this morning!
Usually if it happens it's when the back of the nappy has poked up out of the wrap, but this seems to have come from the side where the wrap does up. I think it was the muslin getting so soaked that the wee had just run out. Really need to get him into the terries!
I had to strip him off and redress him, running late for baby massage, then he proceeded to wee twice when I had his nappy off at massage, one with some force and got it on me for the first time.
Just can't massage the legs and tummy with a real nappy on unfortunately.

xx

LackaDAISYcal · 26/08/2008 15:37

I'd be up for a real yorkshire nappy meet-up

lou222, yes they will come to you and show you the different types on the market and explain the pros and cons of each one and then willadvise you on what might be suitable according to your preferences.

babykind and lollipop have advisors nationwide so there should be someone near you. Not sure whether lollipop only advise on their own nappies though.

Or you could use someone independant (like me if I was organised enough,or BigBadMousey and others), but not sure where they would advertise......maybe netmums local site, UK parents lounge, The Nappy Site, or even on the MN local sites.

lou222 · 26/08/2008 15:45

thanks
i'm a yorkshire mom too - shame you're not set up yet.

AnnVan · 26/08/2008 15:51

Lou222 try a website called Nappyfinder, enter your postcode, and it will tell you all retailers and any agents in your area. It will also list if there's a real nappy incentive scheme locally as well.
As for Agents- I got my nappies from one, and she came round to my house with a suitcase full of different types ofnappy and really went through what I needed. Was very helpful.
I haven't actually used my nappies yet, still impatiently waiting for LO to make its appearance, but the nappies are ready and waiting for when it does! Doesn't stop me from commenting - I can't help myself.
Interesting question is whether or not I'll still be this enthused in 1 months time?

AnnVan · 26/08/2008 15:53

The agent I bought from was a babykind agent btw.
