I have to write a personal statement...help!

Last Saturday, I managed to blag secure one of the last places for a nursing degree at a local uni starting this year... 3 weeks time in fact (gulp).

So I'm desperately filling in forms that have just been sent to me. I've been too healthy for my Dr's surgery and they've insisted on me seeing a dr before they'll fill in Occ Health questionaire for which I'll have to wait a week (deep joy).

I've been asked to write a PS. Now it's 10 years since I last did one. Does anyone have any pointers etc please as my head is spinning from DS/paperwork mountain.

Actually, any advice at all would be very helpful right now.

Think about why you want to do it, what you want to do in the future, and what you have already achieved that will help you be successful.

Have just had to ask MiL to lend me her scales as I need to put weight down on occ health form...I havn't weighed myself in a very very long time so I expect I'm going be on a self imposed diet after that too

I'd swap the coffee for a baileys but I've just had to declare alcohol units consumed in a week on the very same form

yes. alcoholism isn't compulsory until you've finished your training

I've just sent it to you, let me know when you get it please, it's being silly today Lol at the diet and alcohol comments, I was asked all that at my Occ Health and was dreading it, other than a tiny bit of advice given it was ok though

Am slightly worried about occ health for other reasons but remaining positive... all without Baileys/Jamesons/Wine.

Yeah I got it done, found yours really helpful btw. Have writers cramp from all the PS writing and forms though, am so used to typing everything now .

Glad you've got it done, I know what you mean about cramps after writing, just think of it as practise I was lucky as I applied through UCAS online so could type up my personal statement but I did have 10 forms to fill in when I got to my Occ Health appointment and that was extra to the 2 they'd already sent me Anyway good luck with the course etc

Beforehand I had no idea how to start at all....!
But you got it done now anyway.

Oh, and which sector of nursing are you going into....just out of interest

I'm doing Adult nursing 3ANM.

CRB form and ID went off yesterday as well and numerous other forms. Employers are writing reference and I've filled in my part of Bursary form but am confused over whether to split mortgage payments between me and DH or just put them under one person...anyone know?

Sorry can't help you on the bursary form as I've not done mine yet (I don't start until Jan 09) and it would just be me for my mortgage as its only in my name and only me living here.
Having thought about it though, you have to declare DH's income so I would imagine you put the whole mortgage amount down, as they are assessing the household income all together iyswim. Hopefully someone else has been through this and can advise, or phone them nxt week.

I am doing occupational therapy JDB and I hate the sodding bursary form with a passion! I put the payment under one person only (myself) and clarified with the bursary people this would be ok. Am finding it hard to get all the paperwork for it too. Aaarrgghhh!!

Where will you be studying?

Thanks notalone, that'll do me! I'm going to be at Uni of Cumbria (Carlisle Campus). Am just hoping I can get all the paperwork processed in time. I know my bursary won't be on time but I have wages for this month so it should be fine. Know what you mean about all the documents needed for it! Am going to sort that out tonight whilst watching Reading Fest on BBC3

ooops, and all of this reminds me, that I have not aplied for the bursery yet....ooops...but when the paparework came through dh was sytill searching for a job after he finished his army career to retirement...and well.I didn;'t know how much he would earn once back at work...

3annomore - think I remember you from a while ago actually. You are starting OT this year aren't you? I am in the same boat and also start this September. Am feeling a bit nervous about the anatomy side of it but am also very very excited to be doing something I have wanted to do for so long. I will be at Sheffield Hallam. Where will you be studying?

The money side of things is a worry now though as DP had an accident at work and injured his ankle. As he is classed as self employed he has not been working for about 7 weeks and his ankle is still showing no signs of getting any better. I have had to apply for a full bursary, but have not sent the forms off yet as I had difficulty getting all the paperwork I need to prove income and expenditure. I also have forms for student finance which I read somewhere is another grant but I am a bit worried if these forms are actually for a student loan and not a grant. Tis all a bit stressful already lol

notalone...oh, you are also starting this September...how cool...but I understand about being nervous...I am really scared of it all, too...i.e. how will I manage with 3 Kids and all that....financially, as long as dh keeps this Job we will be fine....luckily...one worry less.
I will be doing the course at Northampton University.
Not to worried about the anatomy , as I done my nursing many years ago...however, have since forgotten a lot...but the way I see it, is that if I learned it once I can learn it again.....
It is all very exciting, isn't it....I can't wait....dispite being so scared on the other hand....lol!

Well, I hope you can sort the money side of things out.
Will your dh be laid off for much longer, or will he be able to return to work soon?

It is really exciting. We will probably be on here a lot venting about essays and stress. It is nice to know there is someone else going through it at exactly the same time as me!

With DP its a "how long is a piece of string?" scenario. He has got to go for physio and has been referred but his ankle just does not seem to be getting any better so it could be a long time that he is out of work. What a nightmare hey?! I am glad you will be ok financially. Must be a weight off your mind

Have you had your reading list yet? I got mine yesterday and some of the books are at the £40 mark. Eeek! I think you can get them second hand though - just not too sure where! The site I found only had a £10 discount then a £6 p and p charge so not worth it at all!

So are you a fully qualified nurse? Are you doing a three year course too or will your be shorted if you already have the basic knowledge?

not had a reading list through yet, no....but yeah the books will be exensive, won't they...sigh....

I am qualified (did my training is Germany), but when we moved over to the UK I was pg with es. I did get registred over here...but than never worked as a Nurse....mostly been a sahm tbh...., so, my registration has lapsed and with the way things stand for nurses....I just didn't fancy to return into nursing....I would not be happy in it anymore...
Occuaptional therapy is something I fancied doing for a while, and originally I htought I would never be able to do it, and then I realised that it is worth finding out more and to see if maybe it would be a possibility afterall.
I will do the full 3 years...which is fine by me...that way I know that I will learn all the things I ahould be knowing about
My Kids are 12, 5 1/2 and 4...my youngest will be starting school in September....and as I am already 38 now, it was now or never

I have already been thinking about doing my Masters afterwards...if studying suits me, I might just go straight on to the Masters....not getting any younger am i, lol...

Yes - very extensive sadly! The list I got had a paragraph on each book and also said to only buy one to start off with and build on the collection later. It all depends on what you want to specialise in. I want to specialise in mental health so will probably go for a book geared mainly towards that area. There are also books for physical rehabilitation etc so you will probably find some suit you and not others.

I don't blame you re nursing - I wouldn't want to do nursing either and know a couple of people who qualified and then changed their minds after a few years.

If you do a masters do you end up going in at a higher level then?

Did you get your forms sorted in the end? What was Reading Fest like? I wanted to watch it but went to bed early as we all went out at 2am to watch the Tinsley cooling towers being demolished so I wanted to get some sleep before getting up again!

notalone, even after the masters you still start at the same band....but....you will than not have to interupt your career at a later stage to go higher up....iykwim....
I don't quite know yet which field I will want to specialise in, just yet....it all appeals to me for different reasons...
Working with Brain injured people seems to be somehting I might be interest in....however, I visited a Hand OT department and that looked very interesting, too....and there is the whole paediatric field and the Social care field....oh, the opportunities are so endles, aren't they.
