Last Saturday, I managed to blag secure one of the last places for a nursing degree at a local uni starting this year... 3 weeks time in fact (gulp).

So I'm desperately filling in forms that have just been sent to me. I've been too healthy for my Dr's surgery and they've insisted on me seeing a dr before they'll fill in Occ Health questionaire for which I'll have to wait a week (deep joy).

I've been asked to write a PS. Now it's 10 years since I last did one. Does anyone have any pointers etc please as my head is spinning from DS/paperwork mountain.

Actually, any advice at all would be very helpful right now.

Thanks

ON the Vaccination, we were told it could be done on campus, I assume at the time when you get your Occupational Health check (OH, found now out that with us it will be done in the first week at University)....
I think as long as you have them done before placement you should be fine anyway...

FairLadyRantALot · 15/09/2008 19:44

It's about a woman that loses her children to Social Services...quite strong language...as you can imagine...

Notalone · 16/09/2008 09:51

Well thats good if I can get the jabs done at the medical centre at uni instead. I need to have a BCG too - arrgghhh!!!

Why does the lady lose her kids to social services? Will have to give that one a watch. Who acts in it?

Wish me luck - am about to start on Oliver Sacks - Seeing Voices. Looks like a tricky one this!

If I tell ya, I sort of soil it...so, you gotta watch it yourself
As for who is in it...no idea really, however...the lead character looks familiar...could be a soapstar now? But I mihgt be completely wrong....

JDBfangirl · 16/09/2008 20:11

I nearly died when I saw my timetable (all 12 pages of it) 9-4 nearly everyday monday to fri. Placement in 8weeks...yikes!

However, it's nice to know I'll be in a lecture on wound care on my 30th Birthday.

OP posts:
FairLadyRantALot · 16/09/2008 20:16

lol....it is shocking isn't it , lol!

Sorry, I know you probably said somewhere here in this thread...but can't remember and to lazy to check back, lol....when are you starting?...and which sector of nursing have you decided for ?(it was Nursing, right...) got a memory like a sieve
(god only knows how I will remember anything when studying....)

Notalone · 16/09/2008 20:43

Hey JDB - we sorta hijacked your thread. Sorry!! How are you? Do you start on Mon too? Wound care on your 30th??? Bad luck! My 31st falls on a Monday so I am sure there will be similar topics to enjoy on my birthday too in a few weeks!

Fairlady - I have heard tena lady is good for that if you think you are going to soil it . Sorry, it just tickled me. I will act my age now lol! My mind is also sieve like too , am so scared I am gonna struggle....lots. Am on page 4 of Seeing Voices - its definitely a challenging one like I thought as its non fiction so no story to keep me hooked. How are you getting on with the Diving Bell?

FairLadyRantALot · 16/09/2008 20:53

lol notalone...nownow

As for Diving Bell...well...not been able to read anymore....it will probably be weekend by the time I can read any further...sigh.....

Notalone · 17/09/2008 10:49

I am now an adult again - lol - for now

I know. There is never enough time is there? Will you be participating in any of the social life side of it? I don't think I will be able to much if at all and will be very jealous of all the skinny young things with no responsibilities who only have to worry about themselves

FairLadyRantALot · 17/09/2008 14:18

notalone...like you I doubt that the social side of things will be available to me....I fear I will already have to little time to fit everything in, lol....social life seems to be unattainable, lol...
and yes, I will be at all the young students....but hohum....at least in OT ,as with nursing, there tends to be high ratio of mature students

Notalone · 17/09/2008 14:52

I wish I'd gone to uni when I was younger sometimes. Then again if I had gone I would have studied the wrong course as I had a place back then to study social psychology. I later ended up working with someone who had done the same course at the same uni and could do nothing with it so everything happens for a reason I guess.

What are you wearing on your first day? Do you have a student wardrobe?

FairLadyRantALot · 17/09/2008 16:52

Notalone...like I said, I did my nursing when I was younger, and whilest I don't regrett it as such....it is obviously not what I want to do now anywya...!
After my training I only worked for 4 years in Nursing and once moving to the Uk I just worked as care assistent and Auxiliary nurse and support staff ....and yes my nursing experience did help, but well....
I can't see myself ever wanting to return into Nursing....it is about "little things" really....like the whole monotonous daily ward routines , making beds (I always, truely, always get static shocks which I hate, hate, hate with a vengeance....) and the fact that you hardly have ever any time with the patients...
obviously I know there is a risk with any Job that you go off it....but I think with OT it will be less likely, as there is such variety....
and yes, I know within Nursing there are Jobs which are really very interesting , but those tend to be difficicult to get by....also the whole shift working....it really messed me up!

I don't have a student wardrobe, tbh...I will wear Jeans and shortsleeved top, I think....!
What are you going to wear?

Notalone · 17/09/2008 18:10

I must admit Fairlady I never wanted to do nursing. Mainly for the reasons you have mentioned. The hours are appalling in a lot of cases and I have a couple of friends who are mental health nurses who cannot go into the areas they want to because there are too many people applying for one job. I love the fact there is such variety in OT - I doubt we will ever get bored!

Wardrobe wise I have bought a few new pairs of jeans which will probably be my staple wardrobe for the next 3 years, some tops, a pair of boots and some scarves and accessories. I don't usually do accesories but I figure money will be very tight so I will need them to make the clothes look a bit different each time if I have to over wear them.

Are you on Facebook? I have just typed in mature student on there and there are a coupe of groups devoted to hating mature students . I feel even more worried now!

FairLadyRantALot · 17/09/2008 18:18

ah, Facebook is daft anyway ...I am a member , but hardly ever use it!

Well, I am not buying much new, as I am doing SW, so, don't want to buy much now and then have to buy more, iykwim....although, give me anohter half stone off and I will have to invest in some new Jeans, lol....as these ones are a bit loose already

Notalone · 18/09/2008 09:52

Congrats on the loose jeans Fairlady. Sounds lik you are doing really well so are probably best off waiting until you reach your target weight before you go clothes shopping. Sounds like you are being traiterous though and joining the skinny young things lol. Wait for meeeeee

FairLadyRantALot · 18/09/2008 13:26

lol...believe me when I say, it is a slow slog this time...normally I can loose weight so easily once I focus...this time...well...I joined SW in end of May and only jsut lost a stone now....am hoping to have lost another stone by Christmas and that I will be at goalweight by the next summer ....well...I shall do my best anyway

Hehe, went to Asdas today and somehting struck me....we have right now a rather similar fashion to the one that was around when I started my Nursing 19 years ago ...weird or what!

JDBfangirl · 18/09/2008 15:29

Am an loose jeans although was thrilled to fit into sz14 tops and bottoms at uniform fitting. Can't really lose too much as I have 4 uniforms to last me three years.

Am doing Adult and started Monday. We have lots of mature students to thepoint I think under 25s are the minority or its at least 50/50.

Looking forward to the proper lectures starting... i may regret that shortly

Notalone · 18/09/2008 18:56

A stone is a fantastic achievement! Well done you! The eighties is very much back isn't it? I am not sure if I liked it that much the first time though I call my look "classic" which probably translates into boring!! I am not unfashionable but not really trendy either iykwim! Are you going to go eighties then Fairlady?

JDB - sounds like you are really enjoying it so far and that is fab news about there being lots of mature students! How old are you again? And also where are you studying? Sorry, my brain does not retain much info. Doesn't bode well really hey

JDBfangirl · 18/09/2008 20:24

I'm 29 and studying in Carlisle. I'm very glad I've not had to fork out for books like you lot have. My only compulsory purchases seem to be a fob watch, a black pair of shoes for placement and a black coat for placement...oh and a few pens and maybe a new brain at the end of it all

OP posts:
FairLadyRantALot · 18/09/2008 20:38

lol JDB ...new brain would be advisable for me, too...I think
Oh, and you don't have to buy any books? [green]
On the loose Jeans...may I point out, that I had to buy a bigger size in April, because I had put on 2 stone....and that is the only reason why they are getting loose, lol!

notalnoe....hm...I think I shall stick with my "boring" style....I am not very adventurous with close...am a Jeans and top kinda girl, also do like ankle-long skirts and stuff...but really nothing adventurous and trendy....lol....

FairLadyRantALot · 18/09/2008 21:21

oh, bought an academic diary today...that way I know I get the weeks right (which seems vital when reading your timetable, lol) and you cna put in anything for the whole school year...I suppose

Notalone · 19/09/2008 15:53

Ooooh - Can I join in the expedition for a new brain please. Mine is a bit jaded and worn around the edges (and in the middle!).
JDB - you do not have to buy any books???? That's not fair lol. Do they give you books or do you have handouts etc instead?
Yes, I am definitely a jeans boots and top girl too. Comfy and timeless. Don't think I could quite carry off some of the stuff people in their late teens wear. Especially the belly revealing stuff! I used to have a gorgeous flat belly once sob sob!
Last weekend before mayhem - eeek!

JDBfangirl · 19/09/2008 17:20

No books at all, although this may change when all the library copies are out. We got told to wait and see what we'd find useful.

Our uni gave us an academic diary and a usb pen drive which was nice of them as I was going to buy both once I had my NUS card (for the 10% discount)

I survived the first week anyway, Next week looks a little more structured lecture-wise so I imagine this time next week I'll have brain ache.

We have "Blackboard" which we access from the uni website. I looked at our modules and got quite scared at the lecture notes for "Ethics"

OP posts:
FairLadyRantALot · 19/09/2008 18:06

you will be fine JDB

notalone...yes, last week before we will be bogged down with Coursework, lol....did you also have to enrol this weekend? I have to do that on Sunday....

Well...will have to buy a new pair of Jeans ....was being clumsy earlier, and my foot sort of gave away and as I waas going downhill I fell quite harshly and ripped my Jeans ....I only have 2 pairs...well, now I only have 1 and that simply is NOT enough....couldn't believe it...I mean, wasn't like I have been at the sauce or anything ...my knee is all bloody, too

Notalone · 19/09/2008 18:19

I hope my uni don't give me an academic diary lol. I love my lurid pink flowery one and want to feel it was a good purchase lol. I have heard about Blackboard. Apparently you can get pod casts of some lectures too! Keep us updated JDB - it will be interesting to see what the differences and similarities are in these two courses.

Aw thats bad luck Fairlady. I HATE it when that happens. Bet it was your favourite pair of the two as well. I went charidee shop shopping a few weeks ago and got a lovely pair of Oasis jeans which don't seem to be worn for £4. I also went to TK Maxx and got a pair of Hamnett jeans for £25 (but the logo is upside down lol) and I invested in some Primark skinny jeans for £12. Perhaps you could try the charity shops too if you are trying to save money. Do you favour any particular brands?

Nope - we have to enrol on Monday when we start. I have not been to the uni since my interview day so its all a bit scary! How long will enrollment take on Sun then?
