Last Saturday, I managed to blag secure one of the last places for a nursing degree at a local uni starting this year... 3 weeks time in fact (gulp).

So I'm desperately filling in forms that have just been sent to me. I've been too healthy for my Dr's surgery and they've insisted on me seeing a dr before they'll fill in Occ Health questionaire for which I'll have to wait a week (deep joy).

I've been asked to write a PS. Now it's 10 years since I last did one. Does anyone have any pointers etc please as my head is spinning from DS/paperwork mountain.

Actually, any advice at all would be very helpful right now.

Thanks

Yes and that is what really excites me about it. No more mundane job for us! Yay!!!! We will have to keep posting on here - especially when we have started our courses. Think we will both need that outlet to share the ups and downs of the course (hopefully more ups than downs though!!)

3andnomore · 25/08/2008 00:22

more than likely
It is cool to have someone on mn that is doing hte same course at the same time...be cool to see where the diferences are, etc...

JDBfangirl · 25/08/2008 11:19

Got forms sorted and Reading was great (better for being able to go straight to bed at the end of it).

On the 2nd hands books front, some one reccomended this site www.abebooks.co.uk/

but I haven't used it so I can't say how good they are, also Amazon Marketplace is reckoned to be quite good.

Had a look at that abebooks website...but the 3 Textbooks that were on a little list provided In the Course Programme Information weren't available on there...but some of the dviced Reads (not textbooks, novels, biographies, etc...) were available on there...and it would be definitely a good idea to compare prices with the Amazon website...you cna possibly get some better deals

Notalone, I just bought the 3 Textbooks adviced on Amazon, and paid around £95 for 3 books Well not really shocked, but ouch
The Books I bought are:
Occupational Therapy and Physical Dysfunction (Turner, Foster, Johnson)

Occupational Therapy and Mental Health (Creek)

Making the most of Fieldwork Edcation (Alsop, Ryan)

are those books part of your textbook list?

Did you also received a Autbiographies/Biographies/Films list (apparently they will be given as a study task to first year Students during the summer break in preparation for the 2. level studies....it comprises 21 Books and 33 films....so, I assume it serves well to start early, as they advice, lol....a lot of the movies /films I have watched already, like Rainman, Philadelphia, Forest Gump, Elephant man, Lorenzo's Oil, a Beautyful Mind, Children of a lesser god, my left foot, Girl Interupted, As good as it gets, Edward Scisorhands, Goodnight Mr Tom, One flew over the cuckoos nest, The Horse whisperer, Awakenings ( I even read the book )...so, filmwise I am well ahead...but still....better get hold off the remainding reads/flims over the next year

I am just thinking, should we maybe star a new thread for OT studies.....as we are so highjacking this one....sorry JDB

3andnomore · 25/08/2008 22:18

Well, just had a look again on the ABE website and indeed for teh Biographies/Autobiographies the prices were better....so, I bought all the adviced books, bar 5 that weren't available on there....and saved a fair bit of money....still spend around £45 for the 15 Books, but still a lot better than Amazon.
(Oh and just realised I said in previous post 21 Books...it's only 20....)
So, definitely worht the Price comparison

Notalone · 26/08/2008 10:37

JJB - thanks for the link. I will definitely have a look on there later. I can't believe how much some of these books are!

3andnomore I am having difficulty accessing my reading list properly but I was able to access the first page and the books you purchased are on there. I was going to buy the mental health one first to see how I got on with it. The book / film part sounds great . Think I will have to raid the local library for some of these. I am going to wait until DS starts school next week and then will see how many I can plough through

Notalone · 26/08/2008 10:42
  • 3andnomore - I have just found the mental health one by Jennifer Creek on Google books. Type the title into google and it seems to bring up the entire book to read free online (or to print off). Is this the right book? [hopeful emoticon]
3andnomore · 26/08/2008 10:51

oh dear...but then...if you print it off, well, you will spend a lot, too.....well I would...my cartridges cost over £20 a pop....and you would probably need more then one for the entire Book!

Oh, I saw the mental Health one on E-bay...at the moment for something like £8 ...can't remember p&p though!

Notalone · 26/08/2008 11:42

Hmm - think you are probably right. The book has over 300 pages. I will speak to DP later and find out how much it will cost to print it off.

Never thought of ebay. Will have a look at tht later

3andnomore · 26/08/2008 21:16

i think I saw that it had around 600 pages.....

as for E-bay there is definitely one in the text book section, nursing and medical...once you are in that section search occupational therapy

Notalone · 27/08/2008 10:33

600???? I asked DP how much it would cost to print off a book of around 250 pages and he said approx £20. Oh well, there goes my money saving idea then lol

Just looked on ebay and they are not cheap on there either. Oh well, will resign myself to forking out a packet then

Have your books arrived yet?

JDBfangirl · 27/08/2008 10:59

Be interested to know when the books arrive etc

And don't worry about the hijack, reckon it would have died long ago anyway

JDBfangirl · 27/08/2008 11:14

Don't worry tiredemma, I got it done!

Camping huh...did you get drenched have a good time?

OP posts:
tiredemma · 27/08/2008 11:24

It actually stayed dry! I was able to relax without having to sit under an umbrella freezing to death!

3andnomore · 27/08/2008 13:29

tiredemma, where did you go camping? We went to Hemsby last week from Monday to Thursday....and whilst it wasn't superweatehr...we were so lucky...had only a few drops of rain in waking times and it wasn't to cold

received one of teh books I ordered over Amazon (a private seller though), which was really quick It's the "Making the most of fieldwork education". It's in good condition...so, that is good

tiredemma · 27/08/2008 13:50

3- we went to Hoburne Cotswold.

It was fab.

3andnomore · 27/08/2008 13:59

JDBfangirl · 27/08/2008 14:21

I'm away to the Connect Festival on Friday for the day. I have wellies and waterproofs at the ready. Light rain forecast...yeah right!

OP posts:
3andnomore · 27/08/2008 20:57

oh dear...but you never know...maybe they are talking the truth..........for a change!

notalone....I think you miht want to look into getting tghat fieldwork book already...because you probably need to read it before starting the course....I might be wrong of course...but it's a book that kinda explains it all...i.e. why students have to do what, and things like that...so, seems to be a basics book....

3andnomore · 28/08/2008 12:14

notalone, there is a copy of the OT and physical dysfunction copy on Amazon, used like new apparently, for £24....I think it's a new listing...and also think amazon dropped their selling price...or I bloopede the other day in getting the best deal....lol

3andnomore · 28/08/2008 12:15

oh and I received that book today!

3andnomore · 28/08/2008 13:16

got more stuff through royal mail just now...wohoo....

Notalone · 28/08/2008 19:42

I know 3andnomore - I think I am a bit in denial that I actually need to buy these books and then read them!

I am going away for a few days on Sat so have promised myself I will sort it when I get back then I know I will be in when they are delivered. What do they seem like? Are they heavy going?

3andnomore · 28/08/2008 20:22

the fieldwork to education isn't a big book, but very small printed, lol...and seems to be written in easy understandable straightforward language

the occupation and physical dysfunction book looks very well organized....into sections of certain illnesses and conditions and in each section they go into what is to be done from ot point of view...if that makes sense...again, it seems written straightforward.
Its a biggish book with lrger print and lots of graphs and pictures!

I won a book on E-bay that wasn't on my list but looked really interesting...it is called " occupational therapy without borders - Learning from the sppirit of survivors" and here is the description for it!

This landmark book challenges occupational therapists to examine the generally accepted assumptions and key concepts of their profession by looking at the social and political mechanisms that influence people's access to useful and meaningful occupations. It also explores the new idea of occupational apartheid ? the separation between those who have meaningful, useful occupations and those who are deprived of, isolated from, or otherwise constrained in their daily life.

authors/editors are:
Franciscus Kronenberg, BSc(OT), BA(Ed),
Salvador Simo Algado,
Nick Pollard,

wonder if it would be one I would need anyway...ut then...one can never read to much and have to many books, right
