Is this teacher banter ok?

My friend’s daughter was spraying perfume in class. The teacher jokingly said “come on now put it away, no one cares what you smell like right now”. I think the teacher was managing the situation without a power struggle but my friend thinks differently.

what are your thoughts?

I’m trying to figure out what could be wrong with it!

Eyeshadow · 06/01/2026 23:13

Banter is fine within reason but that wasn’t banter that was just facts.
So it’s a complete non issue.

Your friend sounds like a twat.

Perfectly ok I work in education

I'm struggling to see how anyone could take an issue with this.

AyrshireTryer · 06/01/2026 23:14

Why was she spraying perfume in class?

NuffSaidSam · 06/01/2026 23:14

I don't think it even reaches the level of banter or a joke, surely he was just stating a fact.

I can't believe this is interesting enough for the DD to have told her Mum and her Mum to have told you and you to have started a thread (and now I've responded!).

Pancakeflipper · 06/01/2026 23:14

Rather a calm measured response to someone spraying perfume in the classroom.

PurpleLovecats · 06/01/2026 23:15

What else should they have said? Seems perfectly fine to me!

When I was at school we would have had a bollocking for doing that.

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/01/2026 23:15

I agree with PPs, I don’t see how this would be banter. It’s just a fact - this is a lesson and you don’t need perfume for it

fashionqueen0123 · 06/01/2026 23:16

Sounds fine considering she shouldn’t have been spraying it and he probably didn’t want to cause a big thing of it. A good response

cariadlet · 06/01/2026 23:17

Your friend needs to tell her daughter that she shouldn't be spraying perfume in class.

The teacher didn't use banter, just told her to put it away in a friendly manner - probably to avoid the daughter kicking off if the teacher had spoken to her firmly about her behaviour.

BreakingBroken · 06/01/2026 23:18

why would a child have perfume in class or in school period??
that shit could cause an asthma attack or migraine

LighthouseLED · 06/01/2026 23:18

How is this banter?

The comment is perfectly fine, though.

Cat1504 · 06/01/2026 23:19

That’s not banter

shhblackbag · 06/01/2026 23:21

It's facts. Your friend should be telling her daughter to stop spraying perfume in class.

sellotapechicken · 06/01/2026 23:39

Are all posts on this site rage bait?

Ketzele · 06/01/2026 23:44

Is your friend thinking the teacher implied the girl is smelly? If so, it's a reach.

40andlovelife · 06/01/2026 23:45

I’m struggling to see what’s wrong? The kid should not have been spraying. In my days as a teacher I would have probably said come on love you smell like a tarts handbag. But that was before everyone became soft and cried at the slightest thing

friedeggrunny · 06/01/2026 23:56

Everyone ACCEPT the teacher in this scenario sounds like a dick.

Teenytwo · 07/01/2026 00:01

I find the students that tend to spray are the more difficult ones. They are aware they aren’t to spray in school but they “forget” every lesson and act offended when told they are doing something wrong and to put it away. Unfortunately your friend seems to be encouraging this.

WearyAuldWumman · 07/01/2026 00:02

I don't see a problem with it.

Spudthespanner · 07/01/2026 00:06

Your friend’s daughter sounds like a right pain in the arse

Shinyandnew1 · 07/01/2026 00:08

No need to be spraying perfume in a classroom! At my school, the perfume would have been confiscated, I reckon!

LadyWiddiothethird · 07/01/2026 00:09

A child spraying perfume in the classroom!! Unacceptable.

ScaredOfFlying · 07/01/2026 00:14

What does your friend think was inappropriate about what the teacher said? Is she suggesting it was a reference to something sexual?
