Wild toddler kicked out of ballet class

I’m really unsure if I’m doing something wrong DD is 2 (28m) and is very wild and energetic, she rarely listens to me outside of the house. We’re not a tantrum family she rarely has them she just prefers do her own thing. Her behaviour has caused me a lot of problems in public with people staring making me feel uncomfortable and because she’s also shy when people stare it makes her cry. She loves gymnastics class and we’ve never had any issues, she’s also very well behaved at nursery it’s just ballet class. We’ve been going for 2 terms now and she seems to enjoy it but recently she’d been getting very distracted preferring to play with the props the teacher leaves in reach than actually participate. I got a text message from the teacher and it made my mood feel dull because I’m actually proud of her improvement of being around new faces and trying her best to be involved but now I feel like that’s not the case. The problem is literally just her getting distracted because she likes to touch everything I do get involved and redirect her but I feel like she doesn’t feel involved. Also when she’s doing her side quests it’s not distracting the rest of the class at all. Do I pull her from ballet or stick it out?

Why does she never have a partner?

Because a 2 year-old will not yet have developed the co-ordination, spatial awareness or physical control over their own bodies (let alone the inclination) to be capable of attempting petit galops.

We need to get clickbait titles banned!

Far too young at two for ballet class, you’ll put her off permanently if you keep taking her. Ask yourself whose benefit the class is for.

She is too young for ballet classes at 2 years old. She is behaving as a 2 year old would normally. I would take her out of the class and return when she is 4

beautyqueeen · 29/11/2025 16:46

It’s strange you keep referring to her as ‘a baby’ and ‘can’t hold a conversation’ but take her to a ballet class for 5 year olds!

Shes not a baby and she should have some verbal communication at 2, but the dance school are silly having a class for 2-5year olds, it will never work hence why no one wants to be the 2yos partner!

She’s too young!
Also the way you say….’the teacher leaves in reach’…. Do you have any discipline over your DD? Or is it always someone else’s fault? Also she likes to do her own thing lol!!! So when you say no she has a tantrum????

come on.

I never mentioned anything about a tantrum because she doesn’t have tantrums. I never said it was anyone else’s fault and it’s not my fault either. I said during the middle where they partner up she’s usually left without a partner so she just dances by herself or goes and plays with something. Honestly no need to be horrible.

She has verbal communication she just cannot hold a conversation. She can talk in short sentences. We’ve had our 2 year development last month and hv had no concerns. There’s also 2 other year olds in the class one only sits and watches the other is new and always partnered with the teacher. To talk this poorly on a child is strange. The conclusion you made is from a short worded response on a blog and not real life. Also her peers that we know personally in day to day life either have the same level as verbal communication as her or less

Ok. I didn’t want to type too much. The day I posted I received a WhatsApp message from the teacher

A couple of my grandchildren did ballet. It's boring! I saw the class sitting in a circle doing good toes naughty toes, leg out leg in . It's not engaging for little ones. Irish dancing is an actively where they are doing more than ballet. One granddaughter did that she got trophy's and medals . you could take her horse riding. Or try piano lessons

Tayebanks · 29/11/2025 22:38

Hey, when she messaged she had said “it seems that DD isn’t enjoying much anymore is there something we can do to help” i let her know that maybe she’s felt a bit left out the last lesson hence why she kept getting distracted. Usually i sit on the floor right beside her during the lesson and I’ll just step in and be her partner hence why never really noticed. We came to an agreement and she’ll be staying until the end of the term.

The class teacher asked you what they could do to help, and you start a thread claiming they’ve kicked your toddler out.
A whole thread of manufactured drama about sod all.

A good ballet class is engaging. A bad one is boring. Just like a bad Irish dancing or musical theatre class (for 2 year olds) is just kids running around screeching, and a good one is engaging.
The problem is that the class the OPs daughter is in is much too old for a 2 year old. I have no idea why a teacher woul let a 2 year old in a class with 5 year olds. She would be as lost in an Irish dancing or musical theatre class for 4/5 year olds.
Find a different teacher/class!

taxi4ballet · 30/11/2025 18:54

Any kind of dance class for 2 year-olds is like herding cats. But if the parent thinks they are paying for anything remotely resembling actual dance training, they are in for a disappointment. It is just a bit of fun moving around to some music.

MarioLink · 30/11/2025 19:11

Gymnastics classes are quite different from ballet so doing well at gym then quit ballet till she's older. 28 months is quite young for ballet.

dahliadream · 30/11/2025 19:30

I've got to be honest, there is a CHAOTIC small child at my daughter's ballet class where the age group is similar and it annoys me no end, because she's always running round and distracting the other girls and taking up the teacher's attention, when the other girls are a bit older and trying hard to do it all properly. I often wonder a) why on earth the age group is so wide and b) what her parents are thinking trying to get such a small child to participate in a structured class. So if I were you I would sit this out for now and come back to it when she's older.

Isthisit2025 · 30/11/2025 21:23

Expecting a 2 year old to ‘behave’ in a boring ballet class!! For goodness sakes let her be wild somewhere she is comfortable. I cannot even imagine 2 year olds being subjected to this. It’s like a regime!

taxi4ballet · 30/11/2025 22:55

@Isthisit2025 the OP has said they only do about 5 minutes of ballet-type stuff at the start, and judging by what they do the rest of the time, a ballet class it ain't.

Like I said I just shortened it down. I can’t cram a 2 day conversation. I’ve moved past this. You should too.

I love that you describe your daughter as a wild toddler. I hope she keeps her sense of knowing what she likes and her refusal to be squashed into a particular box as she grows older.

So you left the “what can I do to help?” bit in and edited out the bit where she’s kicked out of the class…. Just in the interests of brevity.
Sure you did.
