Is 35 too old to have a baby?

Thinking energy wise, health issues, not having a huge multi generational age gap as they grow, being an old grandparent, and other practicalities….

As you can see already from the replies, it depends on the individual.

For me personally- yes. I wouldn’t have another baby at 35. Others make different choices.

Plantladylover · 28/07/2025 20:30

of course it;s not. you know it full well. stupid question. women have babies well into their 40s

maybe odd for those who had babies in their teens. but then we all know those who then went again in their 30s when their babies they had in their teens meant they didn't qualify for benefits anymore so they had to have more babies🙄

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 28/07/2025 20:31

Definitely not, I was 33 when I had DD1 and almost 37 with DD2. If I had known I would get pregnant so quickly the first time I probably would have left it another year or so and had a smaller gap.

I am 38 now and they are 5 and 18 months. It is exhausting but no unmanageable.

I was just turned 32 when I had my first and 34, nearly 35 when I had my second. Most mums of babies I met both times were in the 32-38 age bracket, so 35 seems completely average. I was the second youngest in my NCT group first time round at 32, which surprised me!

Iloveeverycat · 28/07/2025 20:37

35 is definitely not old. I had my 4th then. People have them a lot later than that now.

AnotherEmma · 28/07/2025 20:37

It depends if it's your first child or if you already have one or more children, and on the age gaps.

If you had your first child at 20 and there will be a 15 year age gap, I think it's a bit old/late.

If it's your first child or you have a young child (under 5) it's fine.

FWIW I was 31 when DC1 was born, and 34 (nearly 35) when DC2 was born. Not having any more, though!

Baby26 · 28/07/2025 20:43

I wouldn't say a 35 year old will be an old grandparent. My mum had me at 35 and she helps out with my 3 year old regularly. She's only 70 (albeit an active and healthy one). I had my son at 31 so I didn't exactly have him really young either. I'll hopefully be 35 when my next one is born (I've had a loss in the past which is why I say hopefully!).

Caniplease · 28/07/2025 20:45

Not old but for me, my energy is zapped! I’m exhausted constantly. I am 35. I have an almost 10 year old. I’m glad I have mine in my 20s when I was feeling great.

Jesus I dont know anyone that desperate for 80 quid

Lanternsarenice · 28/07/2025 20:50

No loads of people have babies when they're over 40 these days. Just try and be fit and healthy.

Exactly what I was thinking 😂

Charabanc · 28/07/2025 20:53

Hope not. I had my 21 year old when I was 37 😄

Fourteenandahalf · 28/07/2025 20:53

For me , yes. I had mine at 28 and 32, but I do see that people are later and later now - my friends are having their firsts age 40.

youalright · 28/07/2025 20:54

Yes for me personally but my cut off was 30

carly2803 · 28/07/2025 20:55

no

I just would not do it! Purely because I will have my freedom back younger now ive had mine. And i am younger to enjoy them, even a few years makes a difference.

But that is ME. 35 is not too old, absolutely not. Over 40....yes. sorry

I was 35 when ds was born. DH and I had been together 12 years by that point, married almost 2

My mum was 33 when I was born.

So our generations are pretty well stretched anyway.

I didn't enjoy pregnancy but wouldn't have 10years earlier either. Definitely better able to advocate for myself and better informed re feeding etc and MH medication. DS is an only child, but again, that wasn't just about our age, more my mental health

whatacroc · 28/07/2025 21:02

Absolutely not, mother nature says not as your body is still capable at 35 of pregnancy so why would it be too old. i had my youngest just before my 35th birthday.
I much prefer hearing that woman are having babies at this age than hearing about teenage mums who haven't lived any life of their own yet.

Chick981 · 28/07/2025 21:03

I had my second at 35 and feel healthier and fitter than ever (he’s two now)

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 28/07/2025 21:04

Of course it isn't, don't be so silly.

Gentlydoesit2 · 28/07/2025 21:07

Nope! Had my first at 33, second at 41

hotpotlover · 28/07/2025 21:09

It isn't, although fertility really depends on the individual woman.

I had my first at 33, my second at 35, my third at 36 and I will have my 4th and final baby in 2 months at the age of 38.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/07/2025 21:09

Of course it isn’t!

Popplebop · 28/07/2025 21:09

Eh?? I only know a couple of women who had their first child before 32/33 so 35 was practically spring chicken(me included).

Joeylove88 · 28/07/2025 21:11

I had my first at 34 and now 36 pregnant with second will be 37.5 when this baby is due. Countless women are having babies from 35 onwards and good on them! Don't miss out if you really want a baby/s :)
