Nursery lying

Hello so this afternoon I went to pick up my little one from the nursery the had radish and they told me my daughter didn't like it and my daughter 4 year old heard that and came all the way home saying that she liked and they even eat it with butter. What's your thoughts please mummies? I am really upset on why the hell they lied! I just feel they are constantly testing my parental skills! Thank you

Four year olds are unreliable narrators - their brains are still developing and sometimes the bits that encode memory get a bit mixed up.

They also have a really underdeveloped understanding of time and their language use is very imprecise. Never take them literally, their words are only an approximation of what they intend to convey.

I don't think that your daughter is deliberately lying but I don't think the nursery staff are either. They are too busy to be plotting conspiracies around radishes!

In any case it doesn't matter - it is just a food preference. Don't get so hung up on it. When my eldest was 4 he used to LOVE peas at his childminder's house so I dutifully asked her the brand and shop she bought them from. Asda frozen own brand. I bought some and cooked them at home - totally rejected.

Oh and please stop referring to us as 'mummies' it's beyond cringe.....

They were “buttering” everyone up….

Catarinabella · 08/05/2025 23:14

Totally not relevant, but my family ‘safe word’ in case if potential abduction from a stranger is “radishes” I tested my 12 year old and she said safe word is “beetroot” close. Ish 🤦‍♀️

I once asked my then reception aged sons teacher what he’d eaten for lunch… she said she wasn’t sure but she would check and get back to me… so I asked him. He said “chicken nugget starter, chicken dipper main and a hot dog for pudding!!” I was stood open mouthed and said “really?” His reply (at age 5) was “no mother, it was a chicken wrap and a biscuit derr!!”
Kids literally will say anything!! Though I do think my boy was taking the pee out of me to be fair!!
Total separate to this but I have visions of all the fraggles popping butter on their stolen radishes!!!

Motherofdragons24 · 08/05/2025 23:24

Absolutely ridiculous to be upset about this OP. For a 4 year old child the ratio is 1:8, that means that the member of staff has to try and remember exactly who did and did not eat each little thing on their plate and report on it. Such an easy mistake to make. And really who cares?! On my nursery app there’s often mistakes about food, reporting that she ate “all” her sliced peppers (she didn’t, she despises them) it wouldn’t even cross my mind to ask her about it. I know it’s a mistake, a very small minority one at that. Unless your child has food allergies, in which case of course I could understand wanting to be hyper alert about their diet, as long as they are not going hungry at nursery and are being offered reasonably decent healthy food, why the hell does it matter exactly what she eats and if she likes it?

She is in that nursery since she was 1y had couple issues before but they never lied to me before...

It's more likely to be a misunderstanding than a lie Jojo, don't you think? Especially if you've been happy with the nursery up until now. Try not to worry about it.

mrpenny · 08/05/2025 23:34

Jojomamabee · 08/05/2025 20:34

No my daughter said specifically they even put butter on it! My daughter is not lying on this one because she give more details... I know my daughter! And the nursery did not confused with another child they know her since 1year old she is now 4. My thing is why would they lied?! Plus what would you mummies do about this?

Nothing

butteredradish4 · 08/05/2025 23:36

I'd change nursery. The staff are clearly with holding the buttered radish from the kids claiming they don't like it, then eating it themselves in the staffroom. We had the same at a previous nursery with mashed celeriac. They claimed our little one didn't like it when he eats loads at home. We could tell they were lying because they had split it down their polo shirts,.

PrettyPuss · 08/05/2025 23:44

I’d forgotten about radishes. They’re from a time when gooseberries were also popular and where did they go?

Bring back radishes and gooseberries and Make Britain Great Again!

I think that's an extreme over reaction OP.

Perhaps they got the information wrong, perhaps the person who was telling you didn't realise she did like it as she only ate half, perhaps they were tired and had a busy
full on day with lots of young kids and they said she didn't like without really paying too much attention. There are SO many reasons why they may have got this wrong but it's a radish. Seriously, you need to take a breath and either pull your daughter out if you dont have any trust in them or just not give it a second thought and pop some radishes in your basket next time you're at the supermarket and test your daughter for yourself!

scotstars · 09/05/2025 00:01

This is bonkers. Children say random things honestly your life is going to be hell when they reach primary if you take everything they say as gospel and spend your time paranoid that people are lying to you. If I believed everything my child said at that age he went to school and did nothing all day 🙄

Copiousamountsofpulses · 08/05/2025 20:41

How does one even butter a radish???

It is a French thing.

Oioisavaloy27 · 09/05/2025 00:04

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? You feel like they are testing you? Do you not think they have anything better to do? They have probably got your child.mixed up with another, your the parent you explain to your child there has been a mix up and you tell your child now t to scream at you parent your child and don't blame nursery.

Springisintheairohyeah · 09/05/2025 00:07

I once babysat a three year old for the weekend who told her mum and dad we made her sleep in the shed. On her own. With the swans.

If your biggest issue with the nursery is radishes I’d take serious action and get over it. Fast.

Buttered radishes? I’ve not heard of that.
They’re pretty good.
Please subscribe - I’m delicious. lol

ChiliFiend · 09/05/2025 00:19

I wouldn't have thought about this for longer than 5 seconds. I'm not convinced this post is real, but if it is - maybe get a hobby or two and be grateful for the nursery workers who care for your daughter.

Lemonade2011 · 09/05/2025 00:23

I’d have assumed they were mistaken and let it go, 4 kids later they say all sorts and you take some things with a pinch of salt. My kids nursery was lovely 3 of my 4 went there and if they’d got one mixed up over something as trivial as eating radishes I’d shrug and move on. I think you’ve got issues about your own parenting, micro managing nursery your kid screaming at you all the way home. Lighten up a bit there are things to be serious about and things you can let go

Ilovelifeverymuch · 09/05/2025 00:55

Jojomamabee · 08/05/2025 20:46

Apparently there is butter radish is a French thing 🤔 I am upset yes because my daughter come all the way home screaming at me like I said something... plus I feel like they are testing me!

You seem to be reacting to your daughter's texting and getting upset at the nursery. I really don't see what your daughter is screaming about this or why it's such a big deal. Maybe you need to focus on something your child so she is not screaming all the way home over such a non issue or take her to another nursery since they have obviously broken your trust and lied to you about your precious daughter.

Starblind19 · 09/05/2025 01:05

You clearly have too much time on your hands. I can't believe this post is for real? Who cares about radishes. I am just glad my child eats and plays and we make it through the day without a phone call! I think you need to look in to why you are so paranoid. Why would a nursery feel the need to lie about food like everyone else I can assure you they probably don't give a crap what your child eats and doesn't as long as they have something.

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/05/2025 02:54

My sister has reminded me that she used to tell everyone she looooooved 'Clairette de Die'... she was adamant and pleased about this.

She liked SAYING 'Clairette de Die'. She'd never drunk any, in fact, not at 3 and still not now at 44.

For some reason the radish with butter thing has been doing the reels/tiktok/insta rounds lately - its how we've always had them but I hated them as a kid and love them now, either with butter and salt or just salt. I guess tastebuds change.

whynotmereally · 09/05/2025 06:30

When people are saying they mixed her up they don’t mean they forget who she was thry mean workers talker to a ton of parents and occasionally mix up who did what. Also they could have asked her if she liked it and she said no . It’s pretty obvious it’s an error not deliberate
