Am I a the only person that thinks those girl baby bows are horrific?

I’ve been wondering if anyone agrees but these baby bows are so freaking HORRIBLE!! They’re so ugly and giant and makes the baby girl look stupid. Nobody needs to know the gender of your baby that bad. Babies don’t know where their feet are never mind what gender they are meaning they don’t care what gender they get called. If you really wanted to be obvious about their gender you’d buy girly clothes and girly toys which just proves that the bows are literally just to use the baby as an aesthetic!! At least it points out the mothers that care more about their baby looking aesthetically pleasing than them being comfy in a nice little hat and outfit. If my baby is a girl I hope to God nobody gifts me a bow bigger than her newborn head.

This thread represents the worst of Mumsnet. Vile, class based judgemental statements.

Any excuse to punch downwards.

100% agree

Horrific? Ghastly?
Wouldn’t be my choice of headgear but I think you’re a tad OTT with your reactions.

It's a class thing imo. People are distancing themselves from this because it's a way of asserting their class identity.

The bows are not to my taste personally but some people obviously think they look cute. I was not aware of the safety risks previously- these should be publicised more widely. Though perhaps they're better known amongst the demographic that is likely to have small babies... I'm too old to be up to date on that kind of thing!Grin

Miffylou · 03/10/2024 08:02

I agree. They’re horrible, but imo all headbands/bows on baby girls are totally naff, even if the bows are small. They’re completely unnecessary and purely to satisfy the parent's stereotypical views on femininity.

I don't know where this snobby idea came from that parents buy them because of some strange terror around their DC being misgendered.

Like many things, most parents buy them because they think they look cute.

That's as complex as it gets. The weird thing is inventing a way to judge parents imo.

mrsCtheRed · 03/10/2024 08:03

I'm definitely not a fan. I see lots of babys in these, and always feel like look really chavvy and tacky 🙄

Edingril · 03/10/2024 08:03

I think they must use them because they think their baby is not cute enough on its own? Or they have a doll?

But they look a choking hazard to me

Or maybe they just like them? Like some parents choose to dress their kids in bright colours (like Frugi), others choose neutrals etc. Different fashions.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/10/2024 08:05

Absolutely, and there’s a particularly awful one in a MAM ad for dummies I keep seeing online. The ‘bow’ thing looks like the front tie of one of those headscarves women used to wear decades ago, either to keep dust off or when their hair was in rollers.

FloofPaws · 03/10/2024 08:08

Absolutely HIDEOUS I always told DH if anyone bought a
Bow for our DD, now 16, it's going in the bin ... I still hate them nearly 20 Years later

It’s not just different fashions though. Babies have died unnecessarily from wearing headbands. I doubt anyone has died from wearing jeans or frilly dresses or other silly things people dress small babies in.

GreenWheat · 03/10/2024 08:10

They are awful. Pure self indulgence on the part of the parents.

MumblesParty · 03/10/2024 08:10

friendshipover24 · 03/10/2024 05:12

Wouldn’t be my first choice either but I think they look cute. Don’t be so judgmental. If you’re going to judge people about something silly then at least use sentences which make sense. What does it mean to “use the baby as an aesthetic”?

@friendshipover24 I assume that phrase means to dress your baby in an attention-seeking cutesy way, so they become an accessory for you, rather than an actual human being. A bit like the people who put their dogs in dresses and carry them around in little bags. It’s all rather pathetic.

Those bows are really ugly and the parents who put them on their babies have no taste.

Singleandproud · 03/10/2024 08:13

I don't like them and didn't use them but calling them horrific is pretty OTT.

Largely those bows are only used in photoshoots anyway and the point of a photo is to be aesthetically pleasing to the person commissioning the photo and provide a contrasting colour / take up part of the background.

rwalker · 03/10/2024 08:15

Think there ridiculous can’t stand them wouldn’t of put one on my child if I had a daughter
but zero interest in what other people put on there kids

Waitingfordoggo · 03/10/2024 08:16

The word ‘horrific’ gets used completely inappropriately these days IMO.

These bows aren’t ’horrific’. I do find them extremely tacky though. I prefer babies to look like babies rather than elaborately gift-wrapped presents.

MsBaggins · 03/10/2024 08:17

My dd wore them when she was little, although not as big on the bow front. I like the fabric, they keep their head well covered a bit like a hat. She won't tolerate as much as a bobble on her now she's a toddler so she perpetually looks like a boy.

Seems this is just a thread to slag off other people's tastes and preferences with superior words like 'tacky' and 'ugly'. Standard MN I guess.

TheOGCCL · 03/10/2024 08:19

I don’t like it when people dress their pets up either. Not toys.

..nothing more adorable and baby-like..

Err - no.
By your logic, baby boys cannot be as adorable or baby-like as little girls?

For me the adorable look is a baby wrapped in a white towel or in a plain pale babygro.

This. My DS looks the cutest in a white babygrow. My favourite is the one with sheep on it that my mum got him. 😊

My friend bought him some 'girly' ones. Apparently boys aren't allowed to wear anything with bunnies on it.

What do parents do to make their baby boys look cute? Does anyone ever put a baby boy in something that's a safety hazard just for the look of it?

Absolutely Love them, just loved dressing all my girls up,with bows of every colour..and usually with matching blanket for pram..nothing more adorable and baby-like...and now i have the most beautiful bows in all styles to match their uniforms as they head off to school..worry about the earpiercing instead i think🎀🎀🎀

I bet your daughters will grow up insisting on plain grunge wear as a reaction,.

DoloresHargreeves · 03/10/2024 08:25

They're not to my taste either and I'd never put them on my daughter. But I can't get annoyed about it for photos. I do think it's daft when you see babies out and about with them, especially when they're trying to roll and it gets in their way. For a little photoshoot like the ones you've posted, although not my style, I think it's totally acceptable.

Me and my mum have totally different ideas of what looks good on a baby boy. My style is all bright colours, cute prints and easy to move in (Frugi, that company with Rose in the name that does the cute leggings). Hers is all pastel pale blues, teddy bears, trousers that look like adult ones. She finds the photos I love the most underdressed, I find the outfits she buys more suitable for a doll than a boy. Horses for courses.

Absolutely this.
I find some of the comments on here far more chavvy, tacky and horrific than a bow.
Some people think they have all the class when really they have absolutely none.

frozenblueberries · 03/10/2024 08:26

I’ve not seen them over here much but from Instagram I’ve noticed so many American families seem to put them on a baby literally from day one. It’s a bit ‘Look I had a GIRL’ like it would be dreadful if anybody mistook their tiny baby for a boy.
