Mum rude about gifts for four year old…

I’ll caveat by saying I don’t like buying kids tatt and have been known to put funky socks in a party bag (along with sweets and other stuff). So maybe I’m getting this very wrong…

My DC was invited to a four year old girl’s party at a soft play. I gifted a Rachel Elin tin (bright, pink girly colours with my treasures or something written on it) and a kids rainbow Joules drawstring gym bag. My other DC would have loved this sort of thing when they were 4.

The recipient's Mum came up to me at nursery this aft and said ‘thanks for the gifts for xxx, they were a bit ‘out there’ (with hand gesture) for her but we’ll make use’. I was so stunned I just nodded and smiled.

So clearly, she was rude, but were my gifts super weird?

Those are lovely gifts and I know my DD at that age and older would have absolutely loved them and made good use of them.

Very very weird of the mother. Maybe she had you gifts mixed up with someone else who genuinely bought something odd???

Thinking2022 · 14/10/2023 17:26

perfect gifts for any child under 7 I would have thought

AllyArty · 14/10/2023 17:56

She was rude. The presents are lovely. Hopefully the little one will have them for years unlike loads of the other bits and pieces the child was given.

Who's Rachel Elin?

Hmm1234 · 14/10/2023 18:12

Meaning you picked something with outrageously bright colours. She’d of preferred more nude tones. Think sad beige kids

Poodles23 · 14/10/2023 18:19

I think your gifts were lovely 👍

jrc1071 · 14/10/2023 18:33

She’s being rude.

We’ve all been raised to know just to say thank you even if we don’t like the present.

Don’t put any more energy into this and just brush her off.

spidermonkeys · 14/10/2023 18:35

That tin is lovely. I am going to order it now !

petmad · 14/10/2023 18:38

Beggers cant be chosers youre damned if you and damned if you dont .

pennyfest · 14/10/2023 18:38

Those are lovely gifts, very generous of you too! My DD would have been over the moon with those at 4.

pphammer · 14/10/2023 18:41

She was unnecessarily rude.
I loved the gifts, buying a similar box for my little one 💓

ooooahhh · 14/10/2023 18:43

Lovely gifts IMO.
Completely barmy reaction if you ask me and very ungrateful. Why say anything anyway 🙄

Trylessonslearned · 14/10/2023 18:55

I think your gifts are super lovely! My kids would have loved them. But so do I!

pollymere · 14/10/2023 18:59

Actually if someone said that to me, I'd take it as a compliment that I hadn't given them the Shopping List game.

GavinStacey · 14/10/2023 19:07

Lovely gifts.Don't give it any more thought, just a rude woman. The woman sounds like that barmy blonde from Motherland! (I am blonde by the way, just identifying character!)

GavinStacey · 14/10/2023 19:12

Should read -don't give.

BackAgainstWall · 14/10/2023 19:15

They are super presents.

What an entitled and bad mannered woman.

She’ll be in for a shock further down the line when her DD gets utter cheap plastic toot or hand me down presents or even none at all!

Kelljo83 · 14/10/2023 19:33

They are lovely gifts. I think maybe because they don't go together maybe she thought you re-gifted them? Only reason I can think of for her to be so rude about them.

I'd much rather those gifts than some tatt.
I stick to £10 gift vouchers now. Cba with the stress of it

Olderbutt · 14/10/2023 19:36

Super rude Mum! Gosh I'd even like those gifts myself! My grandkids would adore them. Kudos to you for stocking up in the sales, I used to do that for gifts! I think you could have given the tin with a few sweets tbh. Perfectly adequate

Dahliasrule · 14/10/2023 12:48

Apparently 100 people are looking at the tin right now. I bet they are all on Mumsnet.
Seriously, lovely gifts.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Lovely gifts OP. Can't believe how rude that mum was.

Zerosleep · 14/10/2023 19:43

I think it was very generous of you, her response was rude and she should have accepted the gifts graciously.

I don’t know if it’s because I have a son and not a daughter, but I do find them a bit random and they wouldn’t have been to my liking either. However I would never have handled it that way.

Rosejasmine · 14/10/2023 19:58

Lovely present! A parent should never be rude and ungrateful even if the present is not suitable- it is just rude, ungrateful and unnecessary…

Toomuchtrouble4me · 14/10/2023 20:11

Nice gifts - a bit if an odd choice as they don’t ‘go together’ maybe she thought you’d regifted? Not that it would matter if you had but an odd pairing. I think most 4yr olds would be keen to see what was on the tin so I’d have stuck some stickers or Haribo’s or something in it. But much nicer than lots of gifts I’ve witnessed! Maybe she was just a bit awkward and blurted something daft out - we’ve all done it.

Facing40andfrazzled · 14/10/2023 20:15

This is why I always stick €30 in a card with a message to let kid pick something they want

Liamgallaghersparka · 14/10/2023 20:17

Those gifts are lovely, cheeky mare.
