Mum rude about gifts for four year old…

I’ll caveat by saying I don’t like buying kids tatt and have been known to put funky socks in a party bag (along with sweets and other stuff). So maybe I’m getting this very wrong…

My DC was invited to a four year old girl’s party at a soft play. I gifted a Rachel Elin tin (bright, pink girly colours with my treasures or something written on it) and a kids rainbow Joules drawstring gym bag. My other DC would have loved this sort of thing when they were 4.

The recipient's Mum came up to me at nursery this aft and said ‘thanks for the gifts for xxx, they were a bit ‘out there’ (with hand gesture) for her but we’ll make use’. I was so stunned I just nodded and smiled.

So clearly, she was rude, but were my gifts super weird?

@Itsbritneybitch22 it was a dual hand roll gesturing to the stars 😂

People are so weird - lovely gifts!

allhellcantstopusnow · 12/10/2023 23:02

They're good presents; she was rude.

Also, socks in a party bag is a brilliant idea.

Stop it 😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅🤣🤣

Why are people like this!! What did you say back? She’s going on like you wrapped up 12 pink boiled eggs with glitter on them.

StarDolphins · 12/10/2023 23:03

I (& my DD) would’ve been over the moon with those gifts, love them! We never got great ones like these!

She was very rude.

CuteCillian · 12/10/2023 23:05

Perfect imo.

StarDolphins · 12/10/2023 23:05

Infact, if the Joules bag is too oit there, she can send to me & I would make great use of it!

PrueLeith · 12/10/2023 23:10

I would have thanked you very graciously but I do think they're a bit odd, especially the bag which is either something you need or don't, can't see a four year old actually wanting to use it, it's kind of too small to be practical on a day out but too big to be a fun bag. I'd probably pass both of them on as I don't think they'd ever be used by any of my DCs at 4.

My DCs have only ever received toys/books/craft stuff, all of which has gone down well.

Okaaaay · 12/10/2023 23:12

I was juggling three children and 100 bags at the time so was a bit 🫠. It’s making me laugh now though. Maybe she’s sat at home mortified and didn’t mean it quite the way it came out.

My granddaughters would love those, the treasure box is pretty and colourful and the bag would be perfect for gymnastics

GodDammitCecil · 12/10/2023 23:15

It doesn’t matter if you gave the child a potato and a lump of coal.

The mother should simply have said ‘thank you’ and carried on with her day.

You don’t critique someone’s present - that’s monumentally rude.

Wolvesart · 12/10/2023 23:17

She was really rude and definitely should not have said that.

Standing apart from that to try to figure out her objection … could it be functionality that isn’t hitting the right note for her? But, ultimately, really weird to say something like that to you and not on.

MrsPerfect12 · 12/10/2023 23:18

My dd would have loved them both at her age. She's ungrateful and rude. I don't think either were out there.

Okaaaay · 12/10/2023 23:18

@Mummumgem yes we use a similar one for gymnastics and dancing.

@PrueLeith yes my children mostly receive craft stuff and toys to be fair. I find this a bit overwhelming though as there is so much of it. Which is probably why I go for slightly off beat practical stuff. Not ideal though if the children don’t like it.

They're lovely gifts. I'd love them let alone a child.
At between 4-7 my DS loved having boxes to keep his "treasures" in - we ended up with endless shoeboxes full of dinosaurs, toy cars, party bag tat, you name it....

holidayisthebestday · 12/10/2023 23:36

She was very rude, great gifts! Now I'm off on a hunt to find a treasure tin for my 5 year old son who currently keeps his 'treasures' in an old shoebox under his bed.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/10/2023 23:38

They're lovely. She’s weird.

WednesdaysChild50 · 12/10/2023 23:38

silly cow they are nice well thought out gifts OP

StarlightLime · 12/10/2023 23:44

They're lovely items, and completely appropriate for a 4 year old.
Even if they hadn't been, it was extraordinarily socially inept of the mother to say what she did. Poor cow.

StarlightLime · 12/10/2023 23:45

TheChosenTwo · 12/10/2023 22:36

The tin is cute, the bag is a bit strange imo or at least they don’t really ‘go’ together but my dds would have loved to have received both of those!
I don’t know that she really WAS clearly
being rude tbh, maybe a bit blunt because the last comment about “we’ll make use” might have been what I was thinking but the norm would just be to say thank you, lovely gifts and that’s about it!
I’d have probably bought something like hair clips to put in the tin but they really are both very sweet thoughtful presents.

There's nothing strange about the bag Confused. Why would they need to go together?

Tbry · 12/10/2023 23:45

Very generous gift, I would have only given one though.

Definitely not ‘out there’! I’ve attended retail gift trade shows in the past and Rachel Ellen tins are designed to be for stocking fillers or pocket money treats.

The mother was rude, ungrateful and strange 🤷‍♀️

wannabetraveler · 12/10/2023 23:46

I think those gifts are absolutely delightful! Cute as well as practical. She's a rude bugger, isn't she?

luckysonofagun · 12/10/2023 23:47

Great pressies my dd would have been thrilled

The same company make boys tins too 😁
