Could your child do something so bad, you'd cut them out of your life?

Serious sexual assault, and murder, but murder would depend on the circumstances.

I remember reading that his mother still visits him in prison.

He committed the ultimate crime that would test your idea of unconditional love for a child. I'm not sure what I'd do in a similar situation.

I'd absolutely judge someone who stood by a spouse who'd committed similar crimes, but I can understand a parent still persevering with the relationship with their child, whilst hopefully acknowledging that their child was a monster.

My mum said she would consider me dead if I broke up my marriage…so there’s that. For me it would be child abuse or murder (depending on circumstance)

I think you can not forgive them and still visit them in prison. I think I'd still go see them regardless. I don't think I would ever forgive the horrific crimes but I don't know that I'd cut them off entirely.

Sometimes MN is like having a conversation with my 9 year old son, these are the kinds of questions he incessantly asks me 😂 "what would you do if....insert highly unlikely, complicated situation"

I've been thinking about this if Lucy Letby is found guilty. I think her parents were right to go to court with her - if she did do those awful things then she clearly had severe mental health problems.

If your relationship was otherwise good before the crime/s occurred then I think it would be incredibly difficult to abandon them in prison.

I'm sure there could be circumstances that would, possibly. If like to think I'd always be there for them in some capacity but who knows.

Interestingly to your post OP our in laws are close to it because we don't go to the same church or believe in that they do. But they are in a high demand religion and it's not unusual. I've know several families to disown their kids when they left. My in laws to talk to us, but they definitely make sure we know their unhappiness with us.

@Dombasle body mods and becoming trangender harms no one. If you would abandon your child for merely expressing themselves, you have no right to be a parent and the child would be way better off without you.

I would hope that I would stick to my Christian principles of “Hate the sin, love the sinner”, no matter what my DDs did.
In other words, my love for them is unconditional, but I would condemn the hypothetical crime that they had committed.
If God was able to forgive humans for flogging and crucifying Jesus, and still love us, then we should do our best to treat our children with same level of compassion.

You would accept murder in some situations but not a child that's transgender or is tattooed all over?

Hopefully they read this and think "I wouldn't forgive my mother if she was an ignorant awful twat" and they decide to let you grow old somewhere alone and cut you out of their life :)
