Is there anything you couldn't forgive your child?

Mulling over a conversation I had at church this morning

Could your child do something so bad, you'd cut them out of your life?

@Dombasle you're vile

I'd never forgive child abuse, animal abuse or rape but I don't know that I'd cut them off entirely. If they killed one of my other kids or my mum that might do it but depends on the circumstances

Mrsmch123 · 06/08/2023 19:30

with the exception of rape/child sex crimes I don't think there is much I wouldn't forgive him for.

HappyJoyousFree · 06/08/2023 19:35

I have often said to mine I love you but I don't like you very much right now. Just because you don't condone someone's actions doesn't mean you can stop loving them. As it stands I would hope I would be able to continue a relationship with my children regardless of circumstances although how it looked or the boundaries might change. I agree with a pp hate the sin love the sinner.

Yes I could forgive my son for anything.

MatthewBroderick · 06/08/2023 19:41

My first instinct was to say I'd forgive them anything but I'm not sure that's quite what I mean- after all, if they murdered a stranger I'm not sure it's my place to forgive them as I wouldn't be the wronged party. But I would never abandon, disown or stop loving them.

Ragwort · 06/08/2023 19:43

I agree with Babdoc who has written very eloquently. You don't have to 'forgive' your DC but can still support them.

A young man in our village committed the most horrendous sexual crimes but when he was released from prison his mother gave him a home with her ... because what is the alternative? He would end up in a hostel with other criminals. Of course it was an awful situation... most people completely shunned both of them.

I'd add to this murder, drunk driving. I'd also find it hard to forgive money-motivated criminal activity given the upbringing they've had and general security/support they can call on from close and wider family.

No

Sometimes MN is like having a conversation with my 9 year old son, these are the kinds of questions he incessantly asks me 😂 "what would you do if....insert highly unlikely, complicated situation"

This is having a child.

I wouldn't be able to forgive them for

Rape/sexual abuse.
Child or animal abuse, sexual or otherwise.
Serious drink related crimes, ie drink driving.
Drugs, esp drug driving or selling.
Premeditated murder, other murder would depend on the why.

I've been thinking about this if Lucy Letby is found guilty. I think her parents were right to go to court with her - if she did do those awful things then she clearly had severe mental health problems.

If your relationship was otherwise good before the crime/s occurred then I think it would be incredibly difficult to abandon them in prison.

If she is convicted they will forever deny that she did it, and since she (if she did it) will never EVER admit to it, their relationship will continue on that basis.

This is how many families deal with horrible crimes, I suspect.

roarrfeckingroar · 06/08/2023 19:55

Only killing my other child

flowertoday · 06/08/2023 19:58

On a lighthearted ? note voting Conservative springs to mind.
My children already know this.
Rape, murder, subjecting another human or animal to deliberate cruelty. I couldn't forgive those things, but I imagine forgiveness may be a separate issue to an instinct and duty to continue to stand by a son or daughter.

caringcarer · 06/08/2023 19:59

Murder
Child abuse
Paedophilia
Rape
Unnecessary genital circumcisions male or female

That's hard - especially in a village
Probably easier in a town
Poor woman - she'd not committed a crime

Probably.

I don't think I could ever stop loving them though.

Elizadoloads · 06/08/2023 20:01

@Dombasle
Seriously?!?!?

My son brought his new girlfriend home for the first time this afternoon so we could meet her.
She's got tattoos everywhere..face, arms, legs. facial piercings.. piercings everywhere really. It's not my style but that's who she is. So you'd disown her if she were your daughter?

NeverMrsAgain · 06/08/2023 20:01

I really don’t like tattoos, so…..

😬

I don’t think I’d know until it happened really. I think i’d most likely still support him and be there for him through anything, but that’s different to forgiving them.

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/08/2023 20:10

Yes. Child abuse.

Oh fuck off. Women who are concerned about gender ideology do not have the views of that poster.

Stop your ignorant and prejudiced smearing.

That’s what we’ve always told our kids “we’ll always love you, no matter what, but if you ever become a Tory…” 😄

Cucucucu · 06/08/2023 20:20

child abuse or similar horrendous stuff
