Ok...so need some advice plz...I was watching my sisters two boys...age 10..and 7...i have a lively 3 yr old and while they were eating at the table my 3 yr old knocked the 7yr olds glasses onto the tiled floor breaking the frame under one of the lens...the cost to repair them is £75 and my partner is steadfast against paying for them while i think we should...my sister i think is expecting us to pay for them...what would you do??...my partner believes that because i was doing her a favour looking after her boys that should warrant not paying...also that our boy is only 3 and didnt know better...he thinks my sister is out of order expecting us to pay!! What do you all think? Thanks

Has your sister asked you to pay for them?

thesnailandthewhale · 25/07/2023 20:01

Half each?

Mumlife80 · 25/07/2023 20:01

Yeah in a roundabout way she has

I would offer to pay.
In your sisters shoes I wouldn't accept the money though as it was just an unfortunate accident caused by my 3 yo nephew.

erikbloodaxe · 25/07/2023 20:02

Pay for them. Your child broke them.

TeaKitten · 25/07/2023 20:02

Can she afford the repair easily herself?

decaffonlypls · 25/07/2023 20:03

Yes offer to pay

TeaKitten · 25/07/2023 20:04

I think I would offer to pay too, kids glasses are essential and it was an accident yes, but caused by your child. I no you were doing her a favour but that doesn’t mean she should be grateful for a £75 bill at the end of it.

ZenNudist · 25/07/2023 20:05

Are you not in the UK?

In the UK kids glasses are repaired for free on the NHS. My kids are forever breaking theirs.

If you'd sister is telling you it's £75 she must be a massive mug paying way over the odds. I get resentful at having to pay £20 lense thinning for my eldest DS as thats not standard on NHS.

mummymayhem18 · 25/07/2023 20:06

Yes although you were helping your sister out,as your son broke them then obviously you should pay to have them repaired. It's quite an expensive thing to just let go regardless of who can afford it more.

Mortgageportgage · 25/07/2023 20:07

I'd probably pay but resent it if they are designer glasses, as that's a ridiculous thing to put on a child.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/07/2023 20:08

I think half is fair.

Gymmum82 · 25/07/2023 20:08

Your child broke them while under your care so yes you should pay

JadeClade · 25/07/2023 20:09

why is it £75? Kids glasses are not normally so expensive!

If it is £75, yes, pay - you should have made sure the glasses were somewhere safe if they had been taken off

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 20:10

I would definitely pay. Or I'd have a discussion about it-with siblings it depends a lot on who can afford the money most, even though technically breaker pays.

BatheInTheLight · 25/07/2023 20:12

She should recognise it was only an accident and pay for them. If you are expected to pay, you best not help out again as the same thing could happen many times over...

mumwon · 25/07/2023 20:17

why did 7 year old leave his glasses on the table? Are you in the UK? Is the frame OK because you an get replacement lens (check glasses price on line and where they got them from - try specsavers!

The very basic ones are free but even then you don’t get unlimited replacements. I pay about that so my dd can choose a frame that suits her face. I spent my childhood in free nhs frames which are not flattering.

Mumlife80 · 25/07/2023 20:22

Ohh its a mixed bag of responses..
With the regards to the price...according to my sister the NHS only cover damage to the lenses or the legs of the glasses..since it was the frame they wont pay to fix them...

Why wasn't he wearing them?

boredsolicitor · 25/07/2023 20:27

I'd pay but make it clear you can't look after them again as risk of similar event i future cannot be ruled out.

Mumlife80 · 25/07/2023 20:29

He grabbed them off the 7yr olds face and threw them on the the tiled floor thinking it was funny...

OP, that's a massive drip feed. Less of an accident now. You need to pay.

That does kind of change things as it was your son and not the other child’s fault.

that said I would check as it seems expensive and they could be repaired for free

Mumlife80 · 25/07/2023 20:32

Sorry i should have been more clear
