Hello all! Can officially be part of this side now after giving birth to our daughter Ella yesterday!
I stayed in hospital last night and lady wouldn’t let me put her into the cot. I was therefore awake all night holding her while she slept. I am also breastfeeding and she appears to be cluster feeding just now as looking to latch on every 30 mins.
we got home today so myself and husband now taking an hour each to be ‘on shift’ during the night. Only thing being, my husband can’t feed Ella during his hour as I’m solely BF.
Has anyone introduced combi feeding at this stage, to allow overnight feeding to be shared? My nipples are also absolutely agony - midwife is coming out today so hopefully she can check lady is latching correctly
TeddyBeans · 16/03/2023 03:59
@LifeOfRiley1 congratulations lovely! Bollocks to not putting baby down 🤣 I asked my midwife specifically if she could get me a fish bowl because I just love the photos of baby in them and she happily obliged. Hope you've managed to get some rest!
I don't breastfeed but we do do shifts, DP takes the early, up til about 1am and then I do after that (hence the 4am message 😁) I don't think either of you are going to be well rested after an hour! Combi feeding is an option but you could also express for his shifts overnight if you wanted to carry on ebf?

Does anyone have any tips for getting baby to sleep in their next to me crib? He can be absolutely fast asleep but the second we put him in there, he starts stirring and crying and we have to go through the settling process again. Hubby and I are splitting the night so baby can sleep on us but are both just so tired 😴
TeddyBeans · 16/03/2023 04:25
@BabyLimey I swear by swaddling - worth a try if you haven't already. When I worked at a day nursery we did the magic wriggle for the ones fighting sleep. Literally put your hand on their chest and wriggle them gently, helps to soothe them and most of the time sends them off to sleep. If this is your first, have a read into the 4th trimester as well

Hi all, it's good to be on the new thread! The last 6 days have been emotional but also the most incredible.
@BabyLimey I'm a FTM so I'm only basing this off the last few nights, but I was suffering the same as you, baby screamed every time I put him down in the night. Changed a few things:
-moved to the spare room as our bedroom is a bit colder
- used a hot water bottle to warm the cot before putting him to bed and during every night feed to keep the cot warm
- swaddled tightly! I had been swaddling with a cellular blanket but probably not very well, I was given a couple of second hand swaddle wraps which I wrap tightly, and keep baby's arms in (like a baby burrito!). I then put a blanket tightly over the top of him, tucked into the sides of the mattress.
Last night when I put him down during the night he didn't cry!! I actually got a little sleep, made such a difference today.
Best of luck!

@LifeOfRiley1 congrats! I’ve also suffered mega sore nips. Did midwife help with positioning? I’d really recommend going to your local feeding support group asap for help as I’ve found the HVs there to be so much more helpful than MWs with latch. If latch is shallow that could also explain why baby is feeding constantly as it won’t be as effective for them.
I think the advice with combi feeding at this stage would be to always offer boob first and then top up with formula if needed so as not to impact your supply but that doesn’t help much with getting some rest! We have been doing one bottle from the beginning in the evening so I could get some sleep before the night as always have to be up early for 3yo. Works for us but if you’re set of BF then it could impact establishing this, especially with evening cluster feeds etc.
@TeddyBeans interesting about swaddling! I thought I swore by swaddling too (definitely did with DD) but this little guy really doesn’t seem to like it! I’ve ordered an arms up love to dream swaddle and hoping that might be a good middle ground… it definitely helps sooo much with the putting down when it works !

TMI....
Im 3 weeks PP I have just had a number 2 and it was painful I wiped and there's lots of fresh blood and the toilet was filled with blood even though my bleeding has gone brown this week. Do you think I've messed my stitches? Do I need to call anyone?

We're doing the same as he goes from deep sleep on us to a fidgeting fussy baby within 30 seconds of us moving him!
Perexi · 17/03/2023 06:21
Yesterday day 3 really was a ride for me. Basically my milk hadn't come in - my hormones did and I had 2 hours sleep..... OMG the tears 😭 sometimes become in had no milk and boobs so sore from trying to get enough colostrum to satisfy baby.... sometimes crying for Literally nothing big ugly tears.
Archie has lost over 10% of birth weight in 3 day's so we are doing 24 hours of formula top ups untill my milks in hopefully we can switch back even if its expressed milk or formula I need this baby to be eating and happy.
TeddyBeans · 17/03/2023 12:09
@Saltandpepperr where was the pain? If it felt like it was in your bum then it's unlikely to be your stitches. If you can get a mirror down there to have a look it'll probably be the easiest way to know for sure
@Perexi sending hugs ❤️ your milk will come! Topping up in the meantime sounds like a good compromise to make sure he's getting some calories in him. I'm sure he'll be chunking on weight soon enough. I echo @Blocklynn though, if you're struggling with your emotions make sure you talk to the midwife about it at your 5 day check

@Perexi hormones are a nightmare! I’m struggling a bit and going to broach the subject with the midwife as I have been treated for anxiety before. Hope you are feeling better soon and please speak to someone if you aren’t xx
Thanks I totally balled at the midwife and she said it's very normal now but keep an eye on things etc incase it becomes more. My partner has been great too, I could realise that I was being overly dramatic but the tears just kept coming.
LifeOfRiley1 · 17/03/2023 14:17
Day 3 blues have hit me like a tonne of bricks today too. I keep howling for no reason and have asked my close family/in-laws not to bother coming today as I can’t bear to see anyone, which isn’t like me. I’ve heard so much about this stage but never realised just how bad it’d hit
Suchardchoccy · 17/03/2023 14:36
I had the baby blues with both of mine just crying for no reason it was very overwhelming. The second time around my mother in law was staying with us from Spain, she'd been here since 3rd feb to help with DD1 and around the house and be with her while I gave birth so DH could be with me, she didn't leave until 12th March so she saw it all 😂😂

Hi all, just joining now.
Baby Aurora Mimi Rose (Rory for short) was born via elcs at 9.15am this morning. 7lbs 4oz of perfection. I love her so much!
The c section was straight forward and care after has been phenomenal. Rory's blood sugars are all good after my GD and I've been up and showered with no pain. It's like a dream 🥰 with any luck we'll be sent home tomorrow morning. DH is able to stay the night with us too which puts my mind at ease otherwise I don't think I'd sleep at all!
