Breast milk jewellery- cute or wierd?!

Okay.... so I can't decide if this is cute or WIERD.

But..... I am currently bf and drawing to the end of the journey- maybe another month or 2. I feel really sad about giving up but I know it's time.

I saw some breast milk jewellery where they use resin to make a pearl looking stone out of breast milk.

I thought maybe this would be a cute keepsake... if not to wear then maybe just a little heart shaped one to keep in a special box.

Thoughts on this? Cute? wierd?

Also- do you know of any other ideas for breastfeeding keepsakes/ souvenirs?

@yorkshirepudsx yes true, the milk necklace is not as bad. The placenta capsules makes me feel a bit nauseous but it doesn't take much to make me feel sick. I actually have a picture of my placenta. Really could not imagine eating it in capsules or a smoothie though 🤢

I couldn't do the whole placenta thing, I know a lady who owns a business in USA (she's from a town where I have family) and she takes placentas, takes photos of them, takes prints of them, dehydrates them, grinds them into a powder for capsules then returns them to the mother. She makes sooo much money from it too.

I love the breast milk jewellery though. It's doesn't bother me, I don't find breast milk to be disgusting or anything, people give eachother gifts of chocolate and that's cows milk 🤷‍♀️ & people would be surprised if they looked into how a lot of what's seen as 'normal' is actually made/where things come from lol.

@lottie198 I'd be intrigued to ask if all the people saying it's weird if they've breast fed their babies ?

I breastfed and find BM jewellery weird.
To me there was/is just nothing particularly commemorative about breastfeeding to put breastmilk into a locket or whatever.

I fed my child but I never seen it as a ‘journey’ or an ‘achievement’ any more than other parts of motherhood.

Susiesz, I think breastfeeding is an achievement and I didn't manage to do it 🤷‍♀️

I think the whole 'yeah I fed my child and so what' attitude is a lot worse than somebody thinking 'I'm proud of this stage of my life, and want a small way for me to remember it'

nameisnotimportant · 10/01/2023 11:37

@WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat
I'm sorry life has been so hard for you. I apologise that my joke upset you.

Last time I checked I was a full grown adult. I didn't realise calling breasts 'boobs' means I'm not an adult. I will make sure in the future to use the correct anatomical terminology 👍🏻

I think it's very weird. Yes breast milk is amazing, but so is semen. So is bile. And urine! They all have very impressive functions and are almost magical. But I would no more wear Jewellery made out of boob juice than I would wear a vial of jizz around my neck or turn my husbands revolting i surgically removed ingrown toe nail into a brooch.

Going against the grain here, I've got one and I love it. It's pretty and a keepsake from a really special time.

Love this xxx

But why is it wrong for me to not find it personally something to be proud of?
If someone finds it an achievement and they are proud of themselves then cool for them but what is this thing that absolutely everyone who breastfeeds has to be super into it and find it a journey and empowering?
Breastfeeding was none of those things to me and that isn’t wrong.

I have a ring, o don't wear it much and you wouldn't know from looking at it. It's a keepsake from a difficult and wonderful stage of my life and I look at it fondly. The only person who knows is is dh. Not sure how I'm being smug and narcissistic 😂 some people get so weird about breastfeeding

I agree.. how the hell is it smug and narcissistic- thanks for sharing... I think if I do get one, I'll keep it to myself as you say xx

yorkshirepudsx · 10/01/2023 11:44

Suzie- I'm not saying feeling that way is wrong, but the attitude of some people on here all 'oooh I breastfed it's nothing, those with the jewellery are narcissistic' that part is wrong

yorkshirepudsx · 10/01/2023 11:45

I think if you thinks it's cute and want one, do it, it's not smug or narcissistic, it's sentimental and nice & you'd be supporting a small business making them too :)

I think if you don't like them, don't buy them but don't call those that do buy them names like smug

wildmoon · 10/01/2023 11:45

belimoo · 10/01/2023 09:15

I find it so strange that people think breast milk is gross. How can the thing that their baby drinks be so gross? I bet most of them drink cows milk too. If you've ever been in a milking parlour you'd think that was a lot more gross.

So true

It’s fine to be proud, but I think for a lot of strong breastfeeding advocates it crosses over into somewhat of an identity - hence wearing breastmilk jewellery, it just seems attention seeking, inevitably somebody might say ‘lovely necklace where did you get it’ and what are you going to say to that?! It’s like people who plaster everything in their county’s flag, it’s a bit dull for everyone else

wildmoon · 10/01/2023 11:48

Em4815 · 10/01/2023 10:16

I'll go against the grain here too and say I have one and like it - I don't wear it much, it's not obvious what it's made of and I don't go round telling everyone about it so not sure how it would make me smug?! I'm not planning on leaving it to my son or anything, it's just for me. I was on the fence initially but thought I'd rather get one done rather than not and regret it later. Go for it if you like the idea - mine looks like this.

Omg this is stunning. Where did you get it made ?

I think it's pretty disgusting to compare breast milk to any other bodily fluid.
Urine??? Really?
Not sure they are capable of growing and helping a baby thrive. I think you've completely missed the point here. Breast feeding is an achievement.
Weeing, jizzing or excreting bike to digest your food is just normal bodily functions.

maddy68 · 10/01/2023 11:52

Completely odd and weird ...

Why not go the whole hog and collect Dh's spunk in a jam jar so you have a memory of that

Maybe to us as individuals, I still don’t want to come in contact with somebody else’s breast milk in the way I don’t want to come into contact with their piss. What’s with this determination to show off bodily fluids?!

Fragrantandfoolish · 10/01/2023 11:58

Honestly it gives me the eugh. I look at that pendent image and cannot see how anyone thinks it’s stunning, knowing it’s some old milk in resin. I just can’t work out why anyone would want to keep their old off breast milk as a souvenir and worse, wear it.

Its really not that crazy of a comparison though, jizz creates life too. There’s really no need to be offended.

I'm not offended in the slightest. I just don't understand the comparison. Have you ever breast fed?

Breast milk is also a normal bodily function for any lactating woman. It’s hardly some rare super power.

lottie198 · 10/01/2023 12:01

@Fragrantandfoolish seems a pretty rare super power to me considering that only 1% of babies in the UK are breast fed by 6 months old.

If you aren’t offended then why do you see it as a disgusting comparison, particularly when semen also creates life.

Yes I did breastfed my child and plan to do with the next. Not sure why that’s relevant though.

This!!!

I breastfed for 3 weeks and struggled massively due to other health issues, so moved onto bottles and regretted it.

I understand why people get the jewellery. Looking back I wish I'd of saved some breast milk and had something made so that I could be reminded of the 3 weeks that I did manage to do it!

I think it's a lovely way for women to celebrate it and to remember ❤️

It’s actually 1% that are exclusively breastfed at 6 month. I imagine at 6 months most have started weaning. The percentage of babies breastfed in general but not exclusively is 34% at 6 months.

yorkshirepudsx · 10/01/2023 12:07

Side note about my regretted it part - I didn't regret bottle feeding my child before someone jumps at that, he was fed and fed is always best. I just regret not seeking more support/help or trying for longer. X

Emmamoo89 · 10/01/2023 12:09

It's not being smug at all. I'm proud of my breastfeeding journey and see it as an achievement. My journey wasn't easy
