Told off for baby not wearing hat

Today I was on the bus with my 3 month old, dropping her at nursery, and a woman said, 'Oh dear, baby needs a hat. She will burn. You can't be taking her out with no hat on.' She also said in a humorous tone, 'How you have time do your makeup but not put a hat on baby?'
The irony being that today was the first day in a long time I have worn makeup, I just wanted to do something nice for myself.
I felt so embarrassed that she said this in front of everyone on the bus, I'm sure she meant well but I just feel like she shoulda kept her thoughts to herself.
This morning I was in such a rush, its always a miracle we manage to get on the bus on time. It never crossed my mind that she needed a hat. I get it, its hot. I think around 27 degrees in London today.
I told the nursery when I dropped her that she doesn't have a sun hat, they said not to worry.
AIBU to be upset by this? I'm probably just being overly sensitive, it is cancer season after all...

DD doesn't wear a hat. There's no chance she'd keep it on. I have one with us and relentlessly keep putting it on but it's noones business. You should have told her to mind her own business.

doadeer · 22/06/2022 16:59

She could have said it much more kindly and she shouldn't have commented about your make up.

But equally, it's really warm today so a baby 100% needs a sun hat.

Don't beat yourself up, your baby is fine but I'd just try to remember next time. X

lurkingattheback · 22/06/2022 17:00

It was unnecessary of them but get used to it. For some reason people think it's acceptable to give mums their unwanted opinions. For me it was my son not having socks of shoes on, constant 'ooooh he must be cold'. I wish I had a witty comeback. I usually just muttered FO under my breath.

It's amazing how many people feel the need to impart their "advice" to random strangers when you have a baby. Adopt a cheery smile and say "thank you I'll bear it in mind". Then turn your back and ignore!

A hat doesn’t protect from the heat though but from the sun.

No need to wear a hat when it’s warm if you stay in the shade or inside (or in a bus…)

PoseyFlump · 22/06/2022 17:08

@lurkingattheback you're being unreasonable not putting socks and shoes on your little one. The sight of all those cute little wiggling toes! 😍

MumbleAlwaysMumble · 22/06/2022 17:10

I’m quite amazed at the number of people who think a 3 month old baby need a hat because it’s hot.

Even though they won’t go in the sun so won’t be touched by the sun.
I don’t know maybe people make small babies wear a hat inside 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

pansyparkinson44 · 22/06/2022 17:11

Meh. I'm not so sure she was right. My 8 week old has been out today without a hat. She's been in the buggy mostly and not in direct sunlight. When I did take her out I made sure she was in the shade. Your baby certainly didn't a hat on inside a bus!

Is there any reason a baby needs a hat on if they aren't going to be in direct sunlight? Not a goady question, just curious. I can understand a toddler who would run around but when babies aren't mobile and it's easy to keep them covered up I really don't see why it's a necessity

In any case she was very rude to address it like that with you, I can see how it would have felt like an attack, especially the comments on your make up. Interfering hag.

MumbleAlwaysMumble · 22/06/2022 17:12

@pinacolada22 I hope you are ok and that comment has thrown you too much out of balance.

As many people have said, that woman was rude.
And you are doing ok. If nursery had needed a hat, they would have told you!

Butteryflakycrust83 · 22/06/2022 17:13

HOW RUDE!

And none of her business. How did she know baby wasnt going to wear a hat once you got off the bus?

DD ripped off every single hat after 30 seconds, so I just kept her out of the sun.

I just really don’t understand why so many people are insisting that 3 month old babies must have hats on.

Only if they’re in the sun! Obviously they shouldn’t be in the sun, but if they are they need a hat!

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 22/06/2022 17:16

Surely putting any unnecessary clothing on a baby on a hot day is a bad idea. They’re in the shade. They won’t have the sun directly on them. So a hat is just something to increase their temperature.

AppleCharlottie · 22/06/2022 17:16

Your baby didn't need a hat on inside the bus!
Make-up comment in particular was extremely rude.

doadeer · 22/06/2022 17:16

@MumbleAlwaysMumble
Yes but assuming she will be in sunlight during the day, she isn't in the bus all day. And UVA penetrates glass.

I would never dream of telling a stranger on a bus what to do or be rude to a new mum. As with all parenting, each to their own but I always had my baby in a hat.

The baby wasn’t in the sun though. Nor is there any suggestion they were going to be.

MissMaple82 · 22/06/2022 17:17

The amount of tomes I see babies with no hats, or squinting from the sun eith no buggy shade in the blaring sun, more people need to speak up, some parents are genuinely oblivious..

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 22/06/2022 17:23

Please don't be upset, we all forget things. The woman was trying to help so be grateful to her.

It is overwhelming being a new mum and you are doing very well.

12cats · 22/06/2022 17:31

The make up comment isn't rude. It's fair that if OP has time to 'do something nice' for herself as she calls it, the basics should be in place first.

Noone needs makeup more than a baby needs to be kept safe

Jesus Christ you are not being serious?

The baby was on a bus ffs.

I didn't even own a hat for a baby. Mine only needed them once they could move!

Soubriquet · 22/06/2022 17:32

I never put summer hats on my babies.

I kept them out of the sun and in the shade instead.

I tried with winter hats but both of mine would throw them off. So I would wrap them up warm.

roarfeckingroarr · 22/06/2022 17:34

Christ, good thing she didn't know you were putting a 3 month old in nursery.

Ignore these comments OP, they're rarely well meant.

Seriously? You're slamming a new mum because she wore a little makeup? She wasn't risking her babies safety. No wonder new mums feel isolated, judged and depressed when people like you begrudge them a little make up. Let's support mums not slam them.

worriedatthistime · 22/06/2022 17:34

Maybe your baby does need a hat but its not some strangers place to tell you
I wouldn't worry about it , we can't be perfect parents all the time

Except the baby was NEVER at risk because no one would put a 3 month old in the sun like this!!

The baby was moving from house to bus to nursery. Not going for a day out in the sun in its pushchair.

PoseyFlump · 22/06/2022 17:51

I really wish the OP would come back and tell us the woman's age. This is all a storm in a teacup if she's ninety!
