Honestly now. Do you? In what circumstances?

I have been known to, and hate it when I do.

northerner · 02/03/2007 21:02

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/03/2007 21:04

i dont tell my kids to shut up because i wouldnt like someone telling me to shut up.
i will shut up now.

TeeCee · 02/03/2007 21:04

I'm pretty sure I may have sreamed up the stairs 'Shut, UUUUUP' once or twice, I can't iamging that I haven't put it that way but can't really remeber a specific time. Usually I say 'stop shouting please' 'that's enough' or say if you don't stop by the time I count to 5 you'll have time out'. However I've just got to have lost the plot and screamed it out at some point in 5 years.

onlyjoking9329 · 02/03/2007 21:10

nope i have never said it, but have often felt like saying it!
my three have autism and were very late talking.

MadamePlatypus · 02/03/2007 21:21

no I say "shush a minute" in an exasperated tone. Obviously this makes me a much better parent.

themaskedposter · 02/03/2007 21:23

I have said it in the heat of the moment ...

still feel horrible about it now !

mummytosteven · 02/03/2007 21:28

yes, it has been known when I've been at end of tether over prolonged screeching/whingeing.

foxabout2pop · 02/03/2007 21:29

Answer: yes
In what circumstances: when they won't shut up!

Budababe · 02/03/2007 21:36

Have done. Hate it so it usually goes something like this "SHUT UP ........ that shouting" - finishing the sentence seems to make it not quite so bad somehow!

Liking the "pea-sized patience" - must remember that.

Also hate "idiot" and "stupid". DS (5.5) is using "sucks" atm - drives me mad. "Chelsea sucks" "Manchester Utd sucks" etc etc etc. Am telling off for that one.

lunavix · 02/03/2007 21:37

MIL says it to ds (nearly 3) who she adores. I hate it.

Sexonslightlypuffylegs · 02/03/2007 21:49

I try not to. DD keeps saying it and I hate it, so therefore cannot then tell her to shut up. I know there are many worse things once could say, but it just sounds so rude.

stepfordwife · 02/03/2007 21:56

only under my breath..
but it's not shut up..
it's shut the FUCK up..
but nothing so sanctimonious as ds1 and ds2's smug:"we don't say shut-up, mummy!" meanwhile dd, nearly 2, is running around saying "fuck" at top of her voice.

divastropwantstodrop · 02/03/2007 21:57

i say it to dd1,i dont know why though as she clearly doesnt know what it means.if they are all making alot of noise,i tend to tell them to 'keep the noise down or..(insert suitable punishment)'.

stepfordwife · 02/03/2007 22:04

actually, far more shameful than shut the FUCK up, startled to find myself snarling:"Put a sock in it!?" Soooo 70s shit-com. What does it mean?!

foxabout2pop · 02/03/2007 22:06

It means "shut the fuck up or I'll stuff a sock into yer gob matey"

sazjaz · 02/03/2007 22:08

i tell mine a hundred times a day to shut up .

pointydog · 02/03/2007 22:08

I hate it.

Said it twice, both times in last year, both times in car when trying to get away in teh morning with kids bickering in the back.

It's the thing I'm most ashamed of (I think). APologised later both times and I don't want to do it again.

I would never allow them to say it and they never have (in my presence)

stepfordwife · 02/03/2007 22:08

...just the one sock?

Bugsy2 · 02/03/2007 22:20

Said it once, when pushed to my absolute limits & they were both horrified, as it is a forbidden phrase in our house. It did shut them up though!
