Honestly now. Do you? In what circumstances?

god no, what an awful thing to say to kids!

Gobbledigook · 02/03/2007 18:33

Not generally but I have done once or twice. It sounds horrible though.

Kbear · 02/03/2007 18:34

No, don't like it at all, wouldn't want them saying it either. We say please be quiet or sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssh.!

I do when I'm really stressed with them - I also say it to the cat - A LOT as he has a very persistent mieow.

I never swear in front of the kids though

DumbledoresGirl · 02/03/2007 18:39

Good grief! What paragons of virtue you all are! Yes I tell mine to shut up frequently. When they are making too much noise.

But then I am much blunter speaking than a lot of people I imagine.

Pann · 02/03/2007 18:39

No. Never dream of it. Soo disrespectful, IMHO.

ONly had to quiten dd once though, with "dd, will you pipe down a wee bit please?"

Worked. But then, she is utterly perfect!

DumbledoresGirl · 02/03/2007 18:40
Hmm
oxocube · 02/03/2007 18:40

No but do ask them to stop talking though! Having said that, ds1 (11) has just about had it with his 5 yr old brother who is constantly getting him into trouble and interrupting The Simpsons, has just come down in tears and said "he won't f*ing leave me alone mummy"

So we don't say stupid or shut up, but now we can say fuck

Pann · 02/03/2007 18:41

DDG - ??

Iota · 02/03/2007 18:41

I guess that I'm not included in the paragons DG

Twiglett · 02/03/2007 18:42

how old is she Pann

DumbledoresGirl · 02/03/2007 18:42

Yes Pann

Pann · 02/03/2007 18:43

Still ???

She is 7 years old.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/03/2007 18:43

Iota well, according to your post, you are still a paragon compared with me. But oh well.

Twiglett · 02/03/2007 18:44

In that case I should like to know your secret as my 6 year old won't

ever

shut

up

Twiglett · 02/03/2007 18:44

luckily I am currently deaf in one ear

Bobalina · 02/03/2007 18:46

Yes I've said it. It's not great and not something I'm proud of but there are worse things to say to your children.

lazyemma · 02/03/2007 18:47

What's so bad about "shut up"? I'm asking out of genuine interest, not to be confrontational. It's not the sort of thing I can imagine saying to a child (I don't have one of my own yet - due next month) unless they're being a total shouty nightmare, but there are worse crimes surely.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/03/2007 18:49

Well I think so lazyemma. I was just sitting here thinking, I wouldn't even notice how often I say it. But maybe that makes me the worst mother on Mumsnet. I don't know (or care, really). I am sure there are plenty of people out there who say it but don't want to admit it.

Greensleeves · 02/03/2007 18:54

Just the one perfect child, is it Pann?

jollymum · 02/03/2007 18:54

FFS none of you are human or your kids are saints! PLEEEASE, all this "I ask him to be quiet" or "shhhhhhh" You need to live in a real world with four kids, a busy house and a stressed mum. I bet none of your kids are teens are they?!!

Iota · 02/03/2007 18:55

I don't actually think it that's bad - there are many many far worse things to say to them,, but it is a bit rude IMO and I don't really want my children to say it, so I try to lead by example.

hana · 02/03/2007 18:55

nope! no teens here yet!

Pann · 02/03/2007 18:56

see the vasectomy thread, Greens.

other wise there'd be millions of the little feckers!!

Iota · 02/03/2007 18:56

and usually when I say it to the kids they have ignored the politer requests and are driving me insane bickering with each other, especially in the car
