After much persistance and a lot of laundry, we seem to be making headway. We made a pact with nursery that there was no going back to nappies even when he was not getting the hang of it after 2 weeks and we've stuck to it. He simply won't wear a nappy during the day anyway and keeps telling us "I don't want to wear a nappy" even at bedtime although we have now persuaded him that night nappies are different.
Managed a long weekend away and came back with a boot load of nappy sacks with wet/slightly pooey pants and trousers, although none from Sunday and Monday we had no accidents at all.
Ds is saying "I really need a wee" and grabbing his crotch like a rap star but in enough time to get to the toilet - hooray !
I think in a way we needed training just as much as him, as we needed to remember to take him before we go any where, as soon as we get anywhere etc and in between he will now ask.
Still poos in pants however (and has a wee at the same time) but we can work on this over the summer. Tesco pants are 5 pairs for £2 so we decadently chuck away the worst pooey ones and just add "one pack of pants" to the weekly shopping list.
Care mats are a great sanity saver if you are worried about the upholstery, as I reasssured the B&B proprietor at the weekend that he would sit on one at all times when in pants (it was a slightly posher B & B than I thought it was when I booked it.
Ds is too big for most potties (3 and 2 months) so we use a padded toilet seat insert and hold him over loo seats when we are out and about but he's even getting the hang of supporting himself with his hands/arms on a big toilet, perhaps we should wipe first with antiseptic spray but he likes washing his hands afterwards so hopefully this takes care of the germs.
We are more relaxed about the whole thing now but found it quite stressful at first and kept thinking longingly of the weekends when we were able to go out for the day in nappies with no worries. It does get better and it is worth persisting.
I bet we have a complete relapse now I've posted that we've made progress !
