Ciao, hello, welcome!

OP posts:
aupairinitaly · 18/03/2009 19:40

Hello, I know this may be in the wrong place, but thought it was worth a go. I am looking for an aupair position in Italy this summer.
I don't have any child care qualifications, but I have 5 years of experience of looking after children of varying ages, for long periods of time sometimes. I am a 21 in July, non-smoker, BLS qualified, and CRB checked. I am going to uni in September to do my business degree at Birmingham and would like to do something different this summer. I love children and would like to do something abroad this summer and thought I could combine the two.
I am on aupairworld but there are limited positions available, as most familes want someone for 3+ months, whereas I am looking for a position for 1 month-6 weeks.
Any ideas??

aupairinitaly · 18/03/2009 19:41

Should also have said available from mid-June to end of August, but only for max 6 weeks.

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 20:14

I'd have you to cover my DD's school holidays only I don't have any room for you to live in. I'll ask a friend of mine, she was looking a few months ago but gave up because no one replied to her ad. Do you speak Italian?

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 20:26

What's this easter bonnet thing? Is it new? I seem to remember there being threads about it so maybe you could ask elsewhere on mn.

Good news re the mustard poo Rosa.

All you lot making proper meals, it's pasta again in our house, although this time with cauliflower and pinoli and not the solito sugo pronto. I'm getting so lazy.

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 20:29

Actually Aupair, I've just re-read your post. Why only 6 weeks? If you could do the whole of the period from mid-June to end Aug you'd probably have more joy as Italian school holidays are 3 months long. I'll find out from my friend whether mid-July to end Aug is any good to her or if she's managed to make alternative arrangements.

aupairinitaly · 18/03/2009 20:46

Brangelina I need to work at least part of the summer here at home to get some more money together for uni. I would LOVE to stay for the full 3 months, and it is something I will look into doing next year, but this year I just can't afford to.

I used to live in Naples as a child for a few years, and can remember the basics. I'm having lessons at the minute, but I would be no where near fluent. I can understand more than I can speak. Does your friend speak English?
TIA for enquiring to your friend.

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 20:52

Yes she does a little. She'd probably only need a few weeks anyway as she'll almost def go away for most of August. I'll ask, if she doesn't need anyone then maybe she knows someone who does. We're in Lombardy by the way, I don't know if that would make a difference to you.

aupairinitaly · 18/03/2009 20:55

Thanks a lot. Nope, no difference at all. To be honest, anywhere in Italy will do! I love the country. How long have you lived there?

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 20:56

Over 15 years. Seems like far too long sometimes....

viggoandjavier · 18/03/2009 21:01

oh thank yu for the recipe, will try tomorrow, today i scraped together a minestrone.

and yes, i do tell off kids when they misbehave, and tell off my ds when he is horrible to his playdates. i like having his friends round, mostly really well behaved, except one kid who really does my head in....do you girls tell them off? surely they would just misbehave more and more? and then you end up really hating them?

viggoandjavier · 18/03/2009 21:04

sorry cannot help aupair - go through an agency maybe? but it might be expensvive..
lots of threads on easter bonnet on here...no idea what it is, but sounds very sweet , they don't do it at ds' school..

francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2009 21:13

Hi!
Aupair, I'd love an English aupair, as it'd be the best way to keep my dc's fluency in English, but sadly we don't have enough space in our flat . But I'll ask around

Have you tried to advertise on websites like expatsinitaly.com?

I do "tell off" playdates, but most of the time they behave very well.
Viggo. Ds seems to be opening up a lot more. He has freidnship angst, apparently

aupairinitaly · 18/03/2009 21:20

Hi franca, I applied on aupairworld this week, but not looked at any others. I will investigate the expatsinitaly site!

aupairinitaly · 18/03/2009 21:22

eeeek, just looked at site...can you tell me in which topic would best to be post about myself?

viggoandjavier · 18/03/2009 21:34

friendship angst?

francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2009 21:43

AUpair, you are right, the website is confusing. is this any help

Oh viggo, tis a long story. Ds is friends with A, who is also friends with B. Ds thinks B is often rude and treats him badly and he doesn't like it. But also feels that A is not nice at times.
I don't know what to suggest to him. I mean I told him "step away when you feel sad/when they are not nice, but is it the right way? Sometimes it is more complicated. Or not?

francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2009 21:45

aupair, at the end of the article I linked to there is a list of other links you may find useful

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 22:11

Is that woman really called Kylie? I've never met a grown up one. I wonder if her brother is called Jason.

Franca, the scenario you describe appears to be a common one. My neighbour's little girl had similar problems. A threesome is always a pain, someone always gets left out or picked on, often in rotation but sometimes it's always the same person. I don't think there are quick-fix solutions, what you're doing sounds about right.

francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2009 22:16

thanks brange!

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 22:26

Are you working a lot nowadays?

francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2009 22:30

who, me? (shocked). No, just twice a week. Why?

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 22:33

It just seemed that you were always dashing off to work, so I thought they'd upped your hours. No reason, I was just being nosey.

francagoestohollywood · 18/03/2009 22:37

Nah, today I dashed off to pick up dd early, as she goes swimming.
But I dash quite a lot, you know it's hectic city life . Yeah, right

Are you coming this way? I still have romanzo criminale to give you, remember?

I'm off to bed. ciao

Brangelina · 18/03/2009 22:44

I'm trying to wangle a morning off but suddenly big things are going on at work and I have meetings and people coming over and getting in the way for client visits and suchlike. I do need to go to Superpolo soon, so I'll try to engineer something.

Must go to bed too, I've been staying up far too late these last couple of weeks and my face is going all baggy from the tiredness [shallow and vain emoticon].

Notte.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 19/03/2009 09:49

oh, poor DS, franca... I was the "third" of the trio at medie, rotten time... but at his age is a bit more common... is there anything he could do outside school with other children from his class?

hi aupair, sorry, no advice here as I'm in UK and friends back home have just had babies. I agree though that if you could stretch your stay a bit you'd have more chances. good luck!
