In ASDA this afternoon with my 6 year old ds. As I walked down a particular aisle there was another mum with a small child who was screaming about something. The member of staff rather loudly grunted 'When do they go back to school'

Ds and I stoped to look at packed lunch boxes and stuff - the department this woman was shelf stacking. As we were looking ds was asking countless random questions as only 6 year old can and I was answering. She kept leaning accross us to stack which annoyed me. Then as were were walking off she grunted 'For Gods sake just go away'

It was clearly at us there was noone else on the asile at teh time.

I was so cross I challenged her saying 'was that comment directed at my son and I?'

To which she said 'No, I was talking to a fly'

I asked for the manager but he was in a meeting so he is calling me.

I am very very cross. And that is not like me.

You know, the reason customer service in the UK is only just this side of actually criminal is beautifully illustrated on this thread.

It's because the Great British Public feel that somehow it's mean to complain about people who aren't doing the job they're being paid to do.

Anyone with any contact with the public in any context should be able to be basically courteous or they shouldn't be in that job. They don't have to be your best friend, they don't have to remember your birthday and the ages of your children. They just have to not be appallingly rude.

Why on earth should DrN put up with this sort of rubbish? She's a customer, she was in a shop buying stuff, she wasn't causing trouble.

Every country gets the customer service it deserves.

In fact, why should we ever put up with gratuitous rudeness from anyone at all? Where does your self-respect go if you're happy for random strangers to insult you and your child? What are you teaching your child about the way people in a community should treat each other?

My mum and I were rudely served by a cashier at Sainsbury's once. He was obviously in a bad mood as my food was being hurled down the conveyor belt. When it came to my mum's turn she asked him to be a bit more careful. I would have let his bad attitude go, but as we walked away after paying we heard him mutter "yeah f* off". I was livid, I'd just spent a fortune in there so went to customer services to complain. They called the manager down straight away. The guy on the till saw us talking to the manager and then started shouting and swore at us again. We were told situation would be deal with once we left the store.
Needless to say the guy got fired. I did feel bad for him but why take a job dealing with the public if you can't put a front on.

I think it's right to complain if people are rude. In other countries it's just not tolerated so I don't see why things should be any different here.

3andnomore · 01/09/2008 20:04

and why is everyone having a go at zippi now...fgs....isn't it o.k. that she personally isn't keen on Asdas? Surely that is up to teh individual....

personally I prefer Aldi, you only spend half the money you spend in Asda, and I think the workers actually get paid better...as for customer service, I suppose that is pretty non-existent in Aldi...but to be honest, I go shopping because I need food, not because I want everyone to be nice as pie to me....
in a Hospital, on teh other hand, now that is where I like good customer service and would expect it (but to be honest...there I go because I feel unwell or a Kid is, or they need tests or whatever....completely different situation.
I mean, not saying it isn't nice if the shelfstackers at Asdas are polite and nice, but it isn't teh end of teh world...

Carmenere · 01/09/2008 20:10

I don't think that rudeness is ever acceptable and I have said already that I think that Northener was right to complain. I just didn't think that there was any need to take it further.

3andnomore · 01/09/2008 20:10

hm, but pixi that guy sounds a lot worse than the one OP had dealings with....

it wouldn't surprise me when Asda shelfstacker maybe was thinking it, but saying it allowed by accident...as in a "ooops did I say that out loud???" kinda way....
if that person had than howled abuse to Dr.N rather than trying to make embarressed excuses....I probably wold feel Dr.N would be completely right to complain....

3andnomore · 01/09/2008 20:12

[sniggering in a childish way] ....it's is funny really, because this website is possibly almost the rudest place I have ever come across....abuse hurled left right and centre....hehe...and here we are, people saying things like we should never have to stand for rudeness....

quite ironic really

morningpaper · 01/09/2008 20:16

Whenever I see 'supermarket sweep' I think of 'cervical sweep'

You wouldn't want Dale Winton doing that, would you

morningpaper · 01/09/2008 20:17

Yesterday I saw an ill-advised lorry driver park badly, and then get into a fight with a member of the public who complained

I then waded in and berated said Lorry Driver on his language, being as he was, in the presence of young children

Then lorry driver stomped off

It was EXCITING

Saturn74 · 01/09/2008 20:17

All local MNers could go in to Asda and rearrange her lunchboxes and flasks.

That'll learn her.

3andnomore · 01/09/2008 20:18

at HC's idea....

nickytwotimes · 01/09/2008 20:24

Lol at at me too, Saintgeorge.
I was implying that you sounded a little bit chuffed at people being pulled up for not being polite enough to you.

Fwiw, I always scored above 90% for mystery shops. Not Asda though.

AnotherFineMess · 01/09/2008 20:25

I have actually, for reall, not exaggerating, just sprayed red wine all over my laptop laughing at FioFio's talking to flies post.

I LOVE MN.

zippitippitoes · 01/09/2008 20:28

as you are having a go at me...i dont know why

what i said was

"a 100 quid a week seems a lot to spend in asda"

which it is as there are only two adults and a six year old in the drn family

so i was milkdly curious

platypussy · 01/09/2008 20:35

I used to get mystery shopped in a previous job. You spot the mystery shoppers every time - I swear I could even smell them as soon as they entered the shop!

3andnomore "personally I prefer Aldi, you only spend half the money you spend in Asda, and I think the workers actually get paid better." Na, no chance, did you not hear of the hoo haa with Aldi, cos in their Eastern European stores they made their employees wear nappies so they didn't have to take loo breaks?

DrNortherner · 01/09/2008 20:45

Oh this had made me laugh so much.

My flies were not undone so she was not talking to them! I so wish I had calmly gone to the fly spray aisle, picked up a can and delivered it back to her with a hoity 'this is for the flies that seem to be causing you so much bother'

But you don't think when it happens do you?

I can't wait for my response - I can come back and update you all

I bet the ehad office folk are chortling about fly coment.

What if she really sticks to her fly story? They may beleive her?

Get a lawyer mate to call in and say that they act for ASDA flies and wish to point out that one of their clients has been gravely insulted and will definitley be taking this further.

solidgoldbrass · 01/09/2008 20:51

My brother's girlfriend works in a shop (not Asda, one of the chemist chains) and once she stubbed her toe and muttered 'shit' under her breath and some twunt of a customer reported her to head office.

welliemum · 01/09/2008 20:53

oops, scuse typo there - distracted by angry buzzing of flies reading this thread over my shoulder.

DrNortherner · 01/09/2008 20:53

I really do have a lawyer mate (sort of)

I would write a letter to head office sod it if she was having a bad day she should be working in a cell in the bottom of the sea if she doesnt want people in her way!!!!

If you write to them they are likely to send you money of vouchers I always write in and complain when I have a problem they should know they have crap staff!

AnyFuleKno · 01/09/2008 21:02

This thread is in danger of disappearing up it's own bottom, in my humble opinion.

I think she was talking to a fly. It does sound like the sort of thing one would say if a fly was bothering you at work all day.

I can relate. Except in my situation it was Kwik Save, and it was wasps bothering me, not flies.
