Did any of your husbands/partners/ sleep with a prostitute before they met you? How do you feel about it? Does it put you off them? Or is it rare? Its making me wonder if he is a sweaty old desperate pervert. Help.

Sophable, I'm not a saint but I did ask dp today wtf he thought he was doing wearing a tshirt with Nike on it. He looked bewildered (since he's worn it many times and I've never said a word) and then twigged and said oh no, do you think it was made in a sweatshop? I recently bought the rough guide to ethical shopping so I am trying [tiny weeny halo] I do take your point about lack of indigation re other awful exploitation going on in the world though (not on this thread, I mean generally)

piffle · 20/01/2005 20:36

and sophable I totally get where you are coming from but SO much prostitution is not about choice that's what makes the exploitation factor worse. look at all the Eastern Europeans abducted or lied to to come over here, also the children that are bought and sold in Sth East Asia FFS people were stealing children in the bedlam after the tsunami to spirit off for such purposes.
And I'm also not a buyer of Gap or Nike etc
Although conversely those sweatshops are now keeping families fed after the tsunami as the other two main industries which employ the men (fishing and tourism) are defunct.

Caligula · 20/01/2005 20:37

I think you can now get T-shirts with the Nike/ Gap things on them which say "sweat shop labour" or somehting along those lines as well - great idea (as long as they're not made in sweat shops!)

But I digress...

He went to the clinic because i asked him to, we were friends, i got upset, he went. Everything is as simple as that with him, he doesn't overly analise stuff.
Nice someones dh had a bj by a ladyboy though, i think thats one i'll be repeating to my male friends.

True, but two wrongs and all that. It is also much more direct exploitation to my mind and therefore even less excusable.

piffle · 20/01/2005 20:44

I don't buy certain things if they are from certain countries because of my beliefs, I always look at labels I also have an ethically invested savings and mortgage deal.
I do consider as much of my expenditure as possible to rule out unethical trading values in tune with my own beliefs, however it is time consuming but rewarding and it usually costs a lot more.
But we do digress seriously now...

I don't count myself as naive at all. I can say I know dh has and would never go to a prostitute just the same as I know I would never use a male prostitute.

Well, dh and I were friends for many years before we got together. We know the sexual partners each other had, because we were friends at the time.

While I admit that it is a logical impossibility to prove a negative, I am as sure as I can possibly be that my husband has never used a prostitute. This is helped by the fact that he is possibly the worst lier on the planet and can't arrange a dinner out without me guessing. Moreover I know the thought would horrify him.

morningpaper · 20/01/2005 21:22

I think its naive of us to assume we know
categorically that our partners have
never/would never take part in it.

Of course not - they might all be paedophiles. And we would leave them. How does this affect the argument?

Caligula · 20/01/2005 21:25

MP I've just spontaneously applauded.

Spot on.

Lockets you say that to get married your morals and principles were the same, but then you say you know all about him as he told you things that were against your principles. Sorry im just a liitle lost.
Its an entirely different chat but why do our marals and principles have to match anyway, i need and want a little diversity, it widens your mind.

My dh also has a sex drive and a penis, but he wouldn't keep it for long if I thought he had been unfaithful to me
