First Holy Communion dresses - aka little girls pretending to be brides - can I have your opinions please?

I really like April, but my mum thinks it's too grown up and looks like a ballgown. I think that's why I like it.

Any thoughts?

Do they not do short dresses any more? I always think they look much better on little girls.

I had a lovely very plain in style dress but the fabric was intricate and I had a band of embroidered daisies around just under the "bust" line. I suppose it was the 70s so it was a very "then" dress. Also had white shoes and knee-length fancy socks and a lovely grey coat with white leather trim. My Nana made my dress and bag.

Out of the ones you linked to I agree Anna is a bit younger. Don't like April for the reasons you like it. It is communion for a little girl and doesn't need to be grown up.

No, Buda, I'm sure they do them, but when dd1 had hers 2 years ago they were all wearing long dresses.

I had my FHC in the seventies too - and my mum made the dress! Looking back at the photos, it was all meringues and veils!

I have a bride type dress for mine. It had a dirty great cross on the veil. I loved my FHC for the dress alone I think, plus I got presents. [religious significance lost on the 7yo Sheik]

Blimey, just checked out the link. The dresses have come a long way since I was 7 - My dress looked like it had been fashioned from net curtains and a ribbon (it probably cost my mum and arm and a led)

do these girls (or their Mums come to think of it) have any idea what First Communion is about? i.e. not about trying to find the most ridiculous, briday type dress and accessories for an 8 years old?

Thank God I only have boys

Tommy - the children will, or should, know what it is all about as there are classes they have in the run up to it. I did anyway, and it was important to us too.

I had a very plain white dress - but it wasn't a particularly big thing where we were.

Yes, dd does know what it's about, yes, she's been attending classes for the last 6 months (with another 6 months to go, yes, we as a family went to her Mass of Inscription on Tuesday where dd2 did a reading and both H and I stood up and confirmed our wishes.

But I don't know why I'm justifying this to you.

Why on earth shouldn't they look/feel special on their special day?

And IMHO it comes across as rather fickle to suggest you're glad you have boys simply because they won't have to wear a FHC dress.

I think April is fine -- plain without foofiness or ribbons everywhere but the skirt adds a bit of interest.

My mother made my dress -- it was very plain 70s A-line, but topped with a fairly ridiculous veil rather like a Spanish mantilla. And a couple of days beforehand I got kicked in the face doing handstands in the school playground, so in all the photos I have a thick lip and interesting bruising... (ah, haooy memories)

I had a very plain sleeved dress made by my gran (sniffle, miss her). Also, my mum decided I wasn't going to have a veil and consequently I had a hankie-style scarf that covered the head, tied at the back of the neck. I hated mum for about 6 months after that, but it actually looked really simple and different. Feels good now that I was different, but NOT then!

Cod, it's not her disagreeing, it's just the implication that we are somehow unable to see beyond what our daughter's going to wear, and therefore somehow unworthy of the sacrament.

well, to be fair, you were the one starting a thread about first communion dresses....I really can't imagine me starting one in 2 years time when DS1 makes his, asking other people's opinions on what he should wear.

I did apologise at the end - it is a bit of a bug bear of mine - it is quite commonly accepted view round here that the more ostentatious the dress, the less likely you are to see the family at church again. It may be different where you are - I'm just giving my opinion based on my experience.

If you know it is a bug bear of yours then perhaps you should try better to keep it in check, rather than unhelpfully posting

Was at the prices - love the fact that it's 2 of the cheaper styles that have sold out! Have to say they do look a bit bridesmaidy - can't you get a dress from a high street store - monsoon, M&S, Nex or Laura Ashley have some lovely dresses for little girls.
