Anna, April or Beatrix ((boak at names of dresses))

I really like April, but my mum thinks it's too grown up and looks like a ballgown. I think that's why I like it.

Any thoughts?

TIA

I made dd's, the shop ones just didn't sit right. It looked like this but with no appliqueing, just a sash. Mil sis made the veil and the over skirt (as she makes very fine lace stuff) and mil bought her a 'seedpearl' headband. Her satin shoes were the ones she had worn three weeks earlier when she was my sisters bridesmaid, my mam brought the cake and dd tights.
Inlaws, My Parents, Sis and Sil and familys all went out for sunday lunch. It was lovely. DD wore the dress to two weddings and a christening that summer. well the lace over skirt had taken dh aunt, bloody weeks to maken abd it wasn't going to be wasted. Then my mam cleaned it and we stored it carefully with the Christening Robe my nanna had made.

LOL, sophable! I was telling a friend about this thread last night and she reminded me about skullcaps with veils attached!

chipmonkey · 03/02/2008 19:10

violetsky, I am very of anyone who can make dresses like that! I was always hopeless at that kind of thing at school and carried a mortal dread of sewing into adulthood! I am thinking that I might take some classes if I ever have the time.
2sugars, sorry you've been hurt by this thread. The type of dress you're thinking of is lovely! tbh, I do think a lot of people don't realise how strong the tradition is. FWIW I had a short dress and regretted it 3 years on when my dsis made her FHC in a lovely long dress. Generally I think that the dresses now are much more flowergirl-like than bride-like and no-one objects to flower girls in long dresses. I think your dd is going to look beautiful!

Doesn't the sleeveless thing hark back to the days when bare upper arms were considered disrepectful. Just like not having a head-covering. Oh how things have been let to slide these days

violetsky · 03/02/2008 20:46

Look at this DH would not be pleased If I had put ds in this for his FHC

violetsky · 03/02/2008 20:47

I meant this

littleshebear · 03/02/2008 22:59

I like the Anna one best, but have to say I like dresses with sleeves because they look more like little girls's dresses. I got my dd's dress from Childrens Salon and it was very lovely and simple with just flowers at the waist. Our church is very small and you could wear whatever you wanted, jeans if you were that way out, but I like the traditional dresses. I do think it's a bit odd if people go over the top yet never go to church, but I agree, it does take all sorts.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/02/2008 13:04

violetsky - that's horrible ! I really don't like seeing little boys in suits

AuntyThesis · 04/02/2008 13:19

i think extravegance is crude.

i think buying a crucifix made of diamonds is obscene if you are catholic - i use tis as an illustration of what i mean.

i mean, i think it is obscene to spend a small frtune and to enter into a competition witht he rest of the class.

spending this much money is obscene and i wonder why catholics cannot see that when they go to heaven god will say " satin gloves at £35 - really? are you shiting me?!"

my dd wore a beautiful of white dress that an aunty picked up at a secondhand shop.

my boys both wore white shirtsand school pants with the same red tie.

i spend more money on her when she was picked for May Queen

I'm sorry to add to this, but as an aside, there were children at Mass last week (from dd's school, Y6) who were making their confirmation on the same day.

They were asked to wear their school uniform. Maybe (she says, hopefully) all dressing up stuff is done and dusted by then.

Afaik Confirmation is usually done in school uniform. Holy Communion is the one involving all the dressing up. At least in our area, anyway.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/02/2008 15:54

do you know, I've a feeling I might have worn my FHC frock for my confirmation too...don't think we had the veil though..

2sugars · 04/02/2008 16:16

MAS, was that meant to make me LOL? Cos it sure did!

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/02/2008 17:32

It's weird that I can barely remember my confirmation, except that my best friend chose the name Cecilia..I don't even remember who my sponsor was !

Fireflyfairy2 · 04/02/2008 18:15

chipmonkey... I don't think it worked per se, we just choked & splutterd on the musty flavour & that stopped the hiccups....

My twin sisters' wore their holy communion outfits for their confirmation too. They had lovely pale pink knee length dresses

Somewhere over the years the goal posts have been moved!

2sugars · 04/02/2008 21:06

My God, MAS!! I chose Alexandra Catherine Cecilia just because my mum's a Catherine, and because her confirmation name was Cecilia!

violetsky · 04/02/2008 21:41

DD chose Paul, not paula ... Paul.
but, then dh grandad's confirmation name was Theresa

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/02/2008 22:44

my former boyfriend chose Finbar !

violetsky · 04/02/2008 22:57

Actually the priest was very sniffy about her being paul, until dh grandad went to visit him and reminded him that he had just paid for a new church roof. strangely dd was then allowed to be paul.

violetsky · 04/02/2008 22:58

Finbar is a nice name.

nooka · 04/02/2008 23:14

How could you possibly wear the same dress? I had FHC at about age 9 (second or third year juniors) and confirmation at about 14/15. No way could I have worn the same dress - I must have grown about two foot in between! Can't remember what I wore for Confirmation, but I am afraid I chose Zita as my confirmation purely because I thought it would be great to have a Z amoungst my initials! Having said that my father told me he chose Xavier for the same reason
