Songs that make you burst into tears

Was listening to the radio in the car today when 'Everything I Own' by David Gates came on. Previously used to just dismiss this as a soppy love song but since I found out he wrote it when his dad died, it turns me into a crying wreck.

Don't mean this to be a sad thread but what other songs always have that effect on anyone else?

Drive by the Cars (was it by the Cars?) They used it as backing music to some of the Live Aid films of starving children.

Not really a song, but the Last Post played at the end of the silence on Rememberance Day gets me every time.

spacemonkey · 08/10/2002 18:07

You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker - SNIVEL!

lou33 · 08/10/2002 18:29

Ooh me too Spacemonkey, we must be kindred spirits! Baby of mine from Dumbo always bring a lump to the throat I find, especially when I am looking at my kids.

bundle · 08/10/2002 18:48

that song by Eric Clapton (can hear the tune in my head, but can't remember title..) which he wrote after his son was killed after falling out of the window of his mum's flat in the States.

Lynne33 · 08/10/2002 18:49

Continuing from lou33's song which makes her cry when looking at her kids. 'Angel of Mine' by Eternal gets me everytime. Also 'She's The One' by Robbie Williams 'cos it was playing in the delivery room as my dd came into the world.

Patttsy2001 · 08/10/2002 19:17

The song on the Cancer Research UK advert. (In addition to the images and sentiments)

hmb · 08/10/2002 19:28

I cry at far too much. I love the Eric Clapton (Heaven??). song and will blub at that. I also cry at the theme music for Children's hospital. I cry at lots of Bach, and blubbed like a babe this morning listening to Allegri's Miserere. Dh Thinks that I am round the bend

jodee · 08/10/2002 20:20

Oh, blub blub sniffff!

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (is that by Roberta Flack?), You'll Never Walk Alone (but only when watching Carousel, not at a football match, lol!), Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Eva Cassidy's version.

Pass the tissues!

WideWebWitch · 08/10/2002 20:52

Night and Day, whoever is singing it, and Every Time I Say Goodbye...might have got the title wrong but it's "every time I say goodbye I want to cry a little, da da da da a little" etc.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2002 21:17

Lynne33, that reminds me - DS1s "song" is Angels by Robbie so that always brings a lump to my throat too. It was played so may times during the delivery. Along with "torn" by Natalie Imbruglia which turned out to be appropriate and ideal for a thread about songs that make you cry!! (DH also claims they played "the first cut is the deepest" but I don't rememeber)

Bryan Adams 'Everything I do..' I KNOW how sad that makes me but in my defence it was No1 when we got married so it's sort of 'our song' Yuk, sorry, I'll go to bed now !

Bobbins · 08/10/2002 22:16

I have found myself booing to "No Woman No Cry".....as soon as he says "don't shed no tear" that is exactly what I do

emsiewill · 08/10/2002 22:23

"Everybody hurts" by REM

Bobbins · 08/10/2002 22:26

Any Nick Drake....but it also makes me happy too.and Nick Cave..."Into My Arms"...melancholic music

glitterbabe · 08/10/2002 22:29

Unfinished sympathy - Massive Attack always brings a lump to my throat, as does Bitter sweet symphony - the Verve. Other weepies include Let's stay together - Al Green, Sweet love - Anita Baker, and my all time favourite, I can't make you love me - George Michael.

bossykate · 08/10/2002 22:34

ooh! "into my arms" was our "song" at our wedding! know what you mean though!

totally agree with "everybody hurts", "unfinished sympathy" and "every time we say goodbye" plus almost anything by the verve/richard ashcroft.

trying to think of more and also for the songs that make you happy thread!

Fionn · 08/10/2002 22:34

Daniel by Elton John. I remember it made me cry as a child and I probably haven't heard it since but I know I'd cry if I did hear it again.

bossykate · 08/10/2002 22:49

"the ship song" (nick cave) - plus lot of other nick cave stuff!

Marina · 08/10/2002 22:50

Soft Cell: Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, an upbeat accompaniment to being dumped by my first serious boyfriend; Simon and Garfunkel: Bridge over Troubled Water, and on the classical front, Kathleen Ferrier's What is life to me without thee from Orfeo ed Eurydice. Did she know she only had months to live when she recorded it? You just don't get singers like her any more.

bossykate · 08/10/2002 22:53

marina, try the david gray version of "say hello, wave goodbye.." much, much more lump-in-throat inducing than even the original...

Tinker · 08/10/2002 23:03

Agree about the Last Post! And Tank Park Salute - Billy Bragg, If you Go Away - Dusty Springfield.

OP posts:
Bobbins · 08/10/2002 23:08

"don't give up"Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel

Bobbins · 08/10/2002 23:11

Erm...don't want to put people on a complete downer...but "Sonny" by Bobby Hebb is the song I chose for my son's funeral...beautiful song

leander · 08/10/2002 23:16
