Songs that make you burst into tears

Was listening to the radio in the car today when 'Everything I Own' by David Gates came on. Previously used to just dismiss this as a soppy love song but since I found out he wrote it when his dad died, it turns me into a crying wreck.

Don't mean this to be a sad thread but what other songs always have that effect on anyone else?

Many of these turn me into a gibbering wreck but one of my real tear jerkers is the theme tune from 'The Deerhunter'....sob sob ...

My DS (three next month) sobs like his heart is breaking at 'Dance to your Daddy my Little Laddie' and 'Daddy's going to buy you a Mocking Bird'...soppy, just like his mummy ...

Scatterbrain · 10/10/2002 10:52

Ronan is fab, I love Ronan !

Don't hurt him pleeeeeaaaaaaase !!!!

Clarinet60 · 10/10/2002 11:58

Bron, who did the original of When you say nothingat all?

lou33 · 10/10/2002 12:23

I used to have to hold back the tears when dd1 aged about 3 used to sing me Are You Lonesome Tonight. She's a big stroppy 10 year old now so I don't think it would have the same effect!

bea · 10/10/2002 13:00

Adelaide and Tinker!!! - fellow billy bragg fans!!! sigh! going off topic a bit but i love billy bragg!!!

i too love brickbat!! i love that line!

Saturday Boy doesn't make me blub but definitely is one for "Bouncing around the room thread!!"

sis · 10/10/2002 13:15

okay, having embassed myself on the songs that make you happy thread - I'm going to do the same here. Here goes... Seasons in the sun by terry something(?) - you know the one, the chorus is "We had fun, we had joy, we had seasons in the sun ..."

I think I'll have to change my nickname!

ticklebyday · 10/10/2002 14:02

Diane Warwick - walk on by, sniff sniff

lou33 · 10/10/2002 14:47

Terry Jacks sis, I love it too! And what about the one by Paper Lace, Billy dont be a hero? Wow all these memories coming back!

Rhubarb · 10/10/2002 14:52

Ronan, Ronan, Ronan - ahh where shall I start? Teehee! Boooooooring for one, covers a few luvvy duvvy songs, badly, and then disappears into the wilderness, long may he stay there! Sorry to all Will fans, I was thinking of the other 18 yr old ponce, you know the spiky haired one. Although Will gets on mi t**s too, with his squeaky clean looks and girl/boy love songs, aren't there any boy/boy love songs out there - 'twould be more appropriate for him. Oh and Take That, glad they've all gone - was reading about their failed solo careers recently, couldn't help but laugh! Just wish Robbie Williams would join them, he can't stand our country now he says, well why does he bloody well insist on coming back there then!!!!

Oh and just to show I'm not sexist - Atomic Kitten, let's hope they go a gig in Iraq soon where their name will have a double meaning! The only girl band I ever liked was Bananarama. Trouble with all of these bands is they have so little talent they can only nick other people's songs. When I hear them on the radio talking about wanting to write their own stuff I nearly wet myself laughing! They think 'cause they can sing (a bit) and look good they can do anything! Compare them to The Clash, The Doors and Blondie and they just look like primary school kids!

Right, now that I've offended just about everyone I'll let you all get on with crying over slushy re-makes!

Bumblelion · 10/10/2002 15:29

Sis, Terry Jacks (I always get it wrong - always think it is Brian Jacks - Judo star) - Seasons in the Sun is my one all time favourite song. It reminds me of when I was about 9/10 (giving away my age now) and my dad used to take me to school and they always used to play it as we crossed Hackbridge Railway Bridge. Brings back such lovely memories.

SoupDragon · 10/10/2002 15:39

Rhubarb - take a deep deep breath, think calm thoughts... and Relllaaaxxxx....

ps can't stand Will, Gareth, whatever either. But Robbie???

SoupDragon · 10/10/2002 15:39

... as for Atomic Kitten, unfortunately "Whole Again" was no. 1 when DS2 was born so that has special memories for me.

sylvev · 10/10/2002 16:15

"I can't li-ii-ii-ive, if living is without you..." (Nielson?); I agree with "two little boys", "Puff the magic dragon" and "Billy don't be a hero". What about "Tell Laura I love her". I also get tearful if I hear Wet, Wet, Wet & "Love is all around". I also have been known to blubber to "Old Shep" by Elvis.

emsiewill · 10/10/2002 16:17

"Sealed with a kiss" - the original, not the Jason Donovan cover (not even I'm that sad! ).
Reminds me of summer when I was about 5 or 6.

Tortington · 10/10/2002 19:00

wow rhuby now think back when you were a teenager you must of liked some pretty sad charaters too!

Janeway · 10/10/2002 19:15

At seventeen - by Janis Ian - still can't sing it without a waver in my voive, and I'm more than twice that now...

Janeway · 10/10/2002 19:20

...or a wobble in my typing....

Mooma · 10/10/2002 19:31

Janeway, 'At Seventeen' is one of my favourite songs ever. Also 'Two out of three ain't bad' by Meatloaf (Bat Out of Hell is the most fab album ever!) and 'Vincent' by Don McClean (who's showing her age now?)

XAusted · 10/10/2002 19:33

Stop it, you're all making me cry. Any sentimental tune makes me weep, especially Puff the MD and Seasons in the Sun. Very dangerous to listen to these while driving as I can't see. Going to find a jokes thread to cheer myself up. Sob.

lilibet · 10/10/2002 21:46

Another vote for Eva singning Somewhere over the Rainbow. Had it at my Dads funeral, not a dry eye in the house! Away in a Manger at a Nativity always gets me and one that probably no one else will know, but maybe the Count Basie fan off the other thread might 'Passing strangers' by Sarah Vaughn and Billy Eckstein.

Clarinet60 · 10/10/2002 21:49

Yes, the Bat out of Hell album. I wanted this at DS1's birth. For Crying out loud, especially.

Robbie is lovely. Much too young for old me, but he can do noooo wrong.

rosehip · 10/10/2002 21:55

Woman - John Lennon
3 Times a Lady - Lionel Ritchie
My mum has a tape entitled 'Songs for Mama' and they all make you weepy .....

Now films - the saddest film of all time has to be
'Who Will Love My Children' I challenge anyone to be dry eyed
