Songs that make you burst into tears

Was listening to the radio in the car today when 'Everything I Own' by David Gates came on. Previously used to just dismiss this as a soppy love song but since I found out he wrote it when his dad died, it turns me into a crying wreck.

Don't mean this to be a sad thread but what other songs always have that effect on anyone else?

I've got a huge lump in my throat after reading all those weepies! Bridge Over Troubled Water makes me very weepy nowadays since it was played at my mum's funeral in 1999.

sjs · 09/10/2002 05:57

"She" sung by Elvis Costello. (Actually think it was Charles Asnovor first time around.) Used to play that song a lot when my dd was born and sing it to her. My eyes well up whenever I hear it.... sniffle sniffle!

Van Morrison's 'Have I Told You Lately That I Love You'. But the Eric Clapton one 'Tears in Heaven' always does it too, like it does for Bundle and hmb. Also, does anyone know one called Song of Bernadette by Jennifer Warnes? (its on an album called Famous Blue Raincoat and catches me at the back of the throat every time!)

What a great thread for memories this is.

SueDonim · 09/10/2002 06:57

Oh dear, I'm teary just reading this thread!

Elgar's Nimrod; The Twelfth of Never - Johhny Mathis (who he? I hear you say); Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel; Walk On - Matt Monro (another 'who he' ); Rhymes and Reasons/Poems, Prayers and Promises/Zachary and Jennifer - John Denver (our driver has a tape of JD - I'd forgotten how sweet his voice was); The Lord is My Shepherd - Crimond; Downbound Train - Bruce Springsteen; everything by Leonard Cohen; If You Go Away - Jaque Brel; Without You - Harry Nilsson. I don't really do much modern stuff - it isn't romantic enough for me.

The Eric Clapton song is Tears In Heaven.

SueDonim · 09/10/2002 07:01

That should be 'Walk Away' - Matt Monro. Completly different song to Walk On!

SoupDragon · 09/10/2002 07:59

oooh - I'll agree with "Every time you say goodbye" but it has to be the Simply Red version. It was playing when I was left alone with DS2 in the delivery room. Sigh. At least they're happy tears though!

'Isn't she lovely' Stevie Wonder because my partner put this CD on when we got home from the hospital with our daughter.
'Imagine' John Lennon because my Dad once told me he burst into tears one day listening to it and now I do every time (Dad is still alive but it is just picturing him cry over a sensitive song that breaks me!).

"The Day You Went Away" by Wendy Matthews... beautiful but very sad.

GillW · 09/10/2002 11:06

"The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics and "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg - both about the relationships we have with our parents and how we let them drift and regret it when it's too late.

soothepoo · 09/10/2002 11:14

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, Puff the Magic Dragon (!) by, I think, Peter Paul and Mary and lots of others that have been mentioned.

bundle · 09/10/2002 11:25

oh soothepoo - thanks for reminding me..it was on the radio as dd was delivered so it's and at the same time....

Has anyone said "the drugs don't work" by the verve (I think !) - that always sets me off as it reminds me of when Princess Di died and everyone was weeping in their cars driving into work !

No-one start an anti-Di thread now or I WILL cry !!

21stcenturygirl · 09/10/2002 13:41

"Children" by Robert Miles - it was out the same time that those poor, poor children in Dunblain had their lives cut so short. I love the song but cannot stop myself from crying everytime I hear it.

Hilary · 09/10/2002 13:48

Imagine
Puff the magic dragon.
Two little boys had two little toys.

(I'm a bit soft really, as you can see!)

I also cry at any hymn I can remember my Dad singing as I stood next to him in Church. He died 4 years ago and I don't think I'll ever get all the way through 'Guide me oh thou great Jehovah' or 'Great is thy faithfulness' again.

Hilary · 09/10/2002 13:52

Oh, and I agree with those of you who said Tears in Heaven and Bright Eyes too.

I'll have a think about this thread, I might be back...

Bozza · 09/10/2002 13:55

Artificial Flowers by Beautiful South
Ashamed to admit there is one by East 17 (but can't remember the words at the minute) - but its because it had some relevence when DH and I were in a long distance relationship.
Eternal Flame by Simply Red
Angels by Robbie Williams (was current when we got married)

On the subject of labour/birth songs I chose the songs and DH recorded them onto 3 tapes for taking to the hospital. He closely vetted my choices and Torn by Natalie Imbuglia, Help and a Hard Day's Night by the Beatles and various others were banned. Then the git added an extra one that I didn't like and that was the one that DS came into the world to. Although we didn't get access to a tape machine until the delivery room (was left waiting around during transition) so only actually played the first tape.

soothepoo · 09/10/2002 14:07

ooh Hilary, Two Little Boys - had forgotten about that one!
Thought of a couple of others - If I Only Had Time by John Rowles, because it reminds me of my Nanna, and Up The Junction by Squeeze.
Got to go now - starting to fill up and I'm at work!

leander · 09/10/2002 15:12

The wonder of you by Elvis, my dad always sings this and was my favourite so as a surprise on my wedding day he went to a studio and made a cd of himself singing it and we danced to it at my reception. It still makes me cry just thinking about it.

Adelaide · 09/10/2002 15:28

Brickbat by Billy Bragg, "I used to want to plant bombs at the last night of the proms, but now you'll find me with the baby in bathroom with that big shell listening to the sound of the sea. The baby and me" - cripes I'm blubbing just thinking about it - must be the flu!

Also, Days sung by Kirstly McColl and almost anything by New Order.

Rhubarb · 09/10/2002 21:34

C'mon baby light my fire - after it was crucified by that 18 year old ponce. In fact any contrived boy/girl band song makes me cry, they are a definite danger to our children!

ionesmum · 09/10/2002 22:05

I am so glad I'm not the only one who crys at Puff the Magic Dragon. Who in their right minds thinks that's a song for kids?

I used to cry at Two Little Boys but am forever cured after seeing the wonderful Jarvis Cocker be Rolf on Stars in their Eyes!

I also cry at THe Lark Ascending - Vaughan Williams , and suspect I will spend the rest of my life blubbing whenever I here dd's lullaby tape.

emsiewill · 09/10/2002 22:13

Rhubarb, insulting Will is fighting talk. And he's not 18.

(Must remember to get a life soon)
