Songs that make you burst into tears

Was listening to the radio in the car today when 'Everything I Own' by David Gates came on. Previously used to just dismiss this as a soppy love song but since I found out he wrote it when his dad died, it turns me into a crying wreck.

Don't mean this to be a sad thread but what other songs always have that effect on anyone else?

Oh god the most tearjerking film I've ever seen has to be Shadowlands - couldn't stop blubbing for an hour!

lilibet · 10/10/2002 22:04

The Champ. I have seen grown men cry at that. Oh so sad.

What about the "special" songs that partners have, a la Master Bates? Does anyone have one of those? Whenever I have listened to one of those it's always Wind Beneath My Wings or Angels ! Anyone have anything more original (bet spacemonkey does!)?

Special Relationship song:
"Mystery" by Indigo Girls. I went snivelly when it was played at our wedding.

Tearful:
"You Are Here With Me" by REM (about a child)
The Music from the film Lorenzo's Oil.
I don't think I could handle the baby stuff in Trainspotting nowadays, either.

spacemonkey · 11/10/2002 09:01

oo I forgot to add Trouble by Coldplay

spacemonkey · 11/10/2002 11:32

Special relationship song, ours has to be Inflatable by Bush. So beautiful I can hardly bear to listen to it. Gavin's voice is amazing - I can't understand why they're not a much bigger band in the UK than they are.

"Bess you is my woman now" from Porgy and Bess sung by Willard White- played at our wedding

"Apron Strings"- EBG- "hanging, empty crazy things, I want someone to tie to my apron strings" makes me cry more now than it ever did before dd!

Annies Song by Music evokes lots and lots of memories doesn`t it? John Denver, we had it played at our wedding, then many years later my son Matthew who died used to play it on his keyboeard for me.Chariots of Fire, after Matthew died we found a tape in an old recorder and he had recorded all his favourite music he had taught himself on the keyboard. Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton, sung by one of Matthews friends at a concert we held for him. Finally Danny Boy, my Dads favourite, played at his funeral service.

triplets · 11/10/2002 14:24

Me again! Not sure what happened there! The last sentence was Music evokes lots of memories doesn`t it?

Tillysmummy · 11/10/2002 14:29

Music from the Thorn Birds (anyone else remember that ?), George Michael / Elton John, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, what was that song, Seasons in the Sun ?? My mum used to play it all the time when I was a child, that one anyway. Another one that really raises a lump is Tears in Heaven and definitely Whiter Shade of Pale by Procul Harum, I used to love this when I was a teenageer and no it wasn't that long ago !

Rhubarb · 11/10/2002 14:29

Custardo - if you are referring to Morton Harkett, he is still a sexgod and always will be to me! Anyone like Eminem then?

Rhubarb - Aha are touring soon - see press for details!
Our"special" song is "Never met a Girl like you before" by Edwin Collins. Way things are going right now I bet DH wishes he hadn't met a girl like me at all

SueDonim - I can't believe there's another woman who likes Cohen - I thought I was the only non depressed student who listened to it. "you say you've gone away from me but I can feel you when you breathe" what a line.

Snugs · 11/10/2002 16:18

ks - have you got tried ordering the album by record number - try Bliss Discography for a full list.

Often the big shops will say stuff is unavailable if they cant trace it on name - but with the actual number you might have more luck.

Snugs · 11/10/2002 16:20

And by the way - I haven't heard much of their stuff, but what I have heard was great

Tinker · 11/10/2002 16:24

prufrock - I'm a Leonard fan!!

SueDonim · 12/10/2002 07:23

Hurrah! More Leonard fans!

lilly72 · 12/10/2002 08:57

Bright Eyes, the theme from Watership Down always made me sob, as did the film! (I was only young at the time...poor rabbits...!)
Seasons in the sun..
Luca by suzanne vega and pretty much anything by Tracy Chapman.
