Whats the best line to take? 12mph over.

pay the fine.

jampot · 04/11/2004 11:25

pay the fine - I think as a general rule they would ignore 10% of the speed limit over ie. 33mph for a 30mph zone etc. Cameras I think are set accordingly.

Anteater · 04/11/2004 11:26

useful..

Pay the fine. And watch your speedo

jampot · 04/11/2004 11:41

I was caught doing 42mph along a road that used to be signposted 40mph (was 30mph nearer to the town centre but changed about a mile further along). I just didn't realise they'd taken down the 40 sign. Policeman wouldn't listen when I explained!!! 3 points and £40 fine

Not by 12mph, no. Don't try and dodge it, just pay the fine and at least try to stick to the speed limits in future.

Branster · 04/11/2004 12:04

pay the fine! this way you'll know better in the future
12mph over is quite a bit over. I know it's easy to do it and everyone does it but they're not supposed to.

Oh poor you jampot with 3 points!!!

jampot · 04/11/2004 12:06

My points are now "spent" so am no longer a criminal

WigWamBam · 04/11/2004 12:06

Not everyone does it, Branster ... and if they do and get caught, imo they shouldn't be trying to dodge it! Not trying to start an argument or anything, just stating my opinion.

how long do 3 points stay on licence?

I don't have any btw just wondered.

jampot · 04/11/2004 12:11

i just posted it to illustrate how easy it was to go over the speed limit - it had been taken down but I just never noticed it - to me it had always been there and being on my lesson/test route it had originally been pointed out to me. However, I was still over by 2mph in any event!!

jampot · 04/11/2004 12:11

i think 5 years

My dp has been fined for speeding recently, he moaned and moaned sbout it for ages but the way i see it, he was speeding so he should pay.

jampot · 04/11/2004 12:17

maybe not Secur

Where dh works they have a lot of moving traffic on site (Landrover!) and they were given a H&S talk about the effects of speeding etc. He was quite shocked at the difference 5mph can make (especially to a child)

johnnydeppsmistress · 04/11/2004 12:19

Points come off your licence after 5 yrs but your car insurer will ignore it if over 3 yrs old (only if it is your first!). If you were anything over 2-3mph the limit you don't stand a chance in getting it waived! Bad luck! I live in Northants and the county is crawling with the bloody things - but there is never one where it's really needed - a bit like a policeman/bus/gin & tonic.

sorry to be really dim but do they actually write something on the licence and then do they then write again when it is taken ended.

What happens if you want to hire a car abroad eg. in USA?

jampot · 04/11/2004 12:24

Last year my FIL was driving (speeding) and got caught by a speed camera - because his licence is Spanish and they have dodgy car insurance etc they pretended it was MIL who was driving -

Tinker · 04/11/2004 12:24

It is written on the licenece - you need to send it to DVLA
