You have to send your licence off to DVLA and they put the points on (paper licence) with the date and the offence (SP30)

Tinker · 04/11/2004 12:25

It's not taken off your licence unless you need to renew it. But the date of the offence is written on it

KangaMummy · 04/11/2004 12:26

thanks

so can you still hire a car?

Ronniebaby · 04/11/2004 12:29

Anteater, up until recently there was a loop hole in this, if you returned the form filled in but not signed, you were possibly able to get off.

My DH did this, sent the form back un-signed, they threatened to take him to court, and he got a solicitor involve, which only cost a little, and the Judge threw it out of court.

If you sign anything you are admitting to it, (Even thou you did it, a signature is an admittance etc)

jampot · 04/11/2004 12:31

Kanga - do you have points??? or are you planning to get some?

Ronniebaby · 04/11/2004 12:32

JP - points are supposed to be only on your licence for 3 years, and are then clear, but you have to declare them for 5 years to Insurances etc.

This was always the way, unless they have changed it recently ????

Anteater · 04/11/2004 12:32

I admit I was speeding, but this feels more like a fundraiser than a safety thing (Duel carrageway into Manchester not a playground) 3 points and £60 And I live in the country where cameras are for views not roads...

OP posts:
hercules · 04/11/2004 12:34

Pay the fine. Sorry but I have little patience if you were 12 mph over the limit.

Ronniebaby · 04/11/2004 12:35

Endorsements remain on a counterpart licence for:

11 years from date of conviction for offences relating to drink/drugs and driving, causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs and causing death by careless driving then failing to provide a specimen for analysis

4 years from date of conviction for reckless/dangerous driving and offences resulting in disqualification

4 years from the date of offence in all other cases

Branster · 04/11/2004 12:35

oh dear Anteater! £60 is bad enough but 3 point as well! Poor you.

hercules · 04/11/2004 12:37

Ronniebaby - what's so wrong in your dh admitting he broke the law and facing up to the consequences. Is that not we teach our kids ie if they are naughty they have to accept the consequences?

hercules · 04/11/2004 12:38

Sorry, but I dont understand the sympathy for a fine and poitns. If you cant do the time dont do the crime.

Ronniebaby · 04/11/2004 12:39

Who knows I stay out of it, I was just pointing out the fact that it used to be done, but the Laws have now changed.

Come on how many men do you know like to admit they are wrong?????? and that they own the road.

no jampot

I just didn't know what would happen
as I drive all the time when we go to USA and canada and so they always look at licence so as I drive in this country all the time. I keep a close eye on speed as we would be in big probs without me driving.

Ronniebaby · 04/11/2004 12:40

I fully agree, I have and had points on my licence, I drive the country and am aware, but occasionally we ALL slip up at some point. I took my points and paid my fines fair and square.

hercules · 04/11/2004 12:40

Well my dh for starters. I think you may be offending a lot of men by saying that.

hercules · 04/11/2004 12:42

You'd also be in big problems if you killed someone by speeding never mind losing your licence.

Ronniebaby · 04/11/2004 12:43

Well then I stand corrected. Most of the men if not all of them I know hate to say they are wrong.

Anyway, he did it got away with it END OF STORY.

It was just a point I was making that it used to be done, but as I and SallyStraw said not anymore.

Anteater - soz sweeite, you'll have to pay up

hercules · 04/11/2004 12:44

Each to their own way i guess.

KangaMummy · 04/11/2004 12:44

yes sorry hercules I was taking that as obvious

I should perhaps add that I am a very careful driver in residential areas, 20 - 30 mph in villages, towns etc. This was a near motorway type road. Nobody convicted by this camera posed a threat to life or limb.
Lets see a few cameras at the top of my drive and outside schools...

OP posts:
hercules · 04/11/2004 12:47

I guess it's a similar thing to drinkdriving. Lots of people used to think it was no big deal and hopefully that isnt the majority opinion now.
I think most people would certainly look down on it now.
