Calling all smokers who roll their own...............

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:06

and before anyone starts, I don't want a debate on the wrongs of smoking, I already know them.

Anyhow, back to the subject.

Since the revelation that DH has the odd cigarette I've also discovered (well he discovered actually as he'd not tried before) that he's pretty good at rolling his own cigarettes. We've decided, since it's a lot cheaper, that he'll roll mine for me too (when I try they come out looking like "gone wrong Cigars that have been cut open on one side" ).

Anyway, at the moment we've just bought a pack of "Golden Leaf" tobacco from the local shop, some slim filters and a pack of green Rizlas.

Now what I want to know is -

What are the differences between all the different papers you can buy to roll your own? (when I bought the green pack there were loads and I bought the green as the lovely shop assistant said that was what most people use).

Are there lots of different types of tips???

What tobacco do you buy - Golden Leaf is ok (and cheap) , but I wouldn't mind spending a little more on some decent stuff given that it works out so much cheaper than buying cigarettes.

Do any of you buy online - and if so from where???

Me neither not, LOTF. I did have dreadful smokers' cough though .

Divvy · 16/11/2007 16:14

What flavour backy did you get then?

I went to town myself today...and walked pass 2 people smoking "stuff" dont know how they can smoke in public like that..they must juat not care...cos everyone knows what it smells like......dont they?

OK..so its been my first few days here....and I am already on a splif thread...maybe I should go back to badmothers!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 16:22

oh I didn't get any backy - just some menthol tips and a rolling machine - still got loads of the other stuff left so I may as well finish that before I buy any more.

And this WASN'T a splif thread - it's been corrupted - it was a perfectly innocent thread when I started it

pooka - not quite as obvious as the old ''20 silk cut, 14 marsbars and a packet of king-size rizzies please''

Desiderata · 16/11/2007 16:46

My mum used to have a packet of Sobrane every Christmas. God, the memories ...

puppydavies · 16/11/2007 16:48

black russians!

Desiderata · 16/11/2007 16:54

Those too! Always with a glass of Egg Nog

pooka · 16/11/2007 16:57

Nonono

Obvious is:

pack of golden virginia, 2 packs of kingsize skins. 4 family packets of tangfastic haribo, funsize bag of cadbury's, whatever crisps are close to the till and a packet of chocolate digestives. Or three.

moopymoo · 16/11/2007 17:08

ninedragons' comment has just made me ROFL, so reminiscent of misspent schooldays

Pk616 · 16/11/2007 23:23

With Rizla the colour differeces mean the following:-

White = Thick like wallpaper, it's like smoking a note book, not very nice!

Red= Thick like toilet paper, still way too much paper for my liking and drys your lips up till it sticks to them and peels off the skin from them BUT easy tp roll with

Green= Same thickness as red but corners have been cut off the unglued end of paper- good for the sight impared and easier in rolling machines

Blue= A reasonable paper thickness for smoking paper slightly crisper in texture to the thicker ones so more of a challenge to roll

Silver= wafer thin papers so your only smoking tobacco and not pine tree! again a bigger challenge than the next grade up of paper to roll but worth it!

As for rolling technique... I find that rolling with the filter tips in is easier! I can only do it one way:-

Take paper from paper pack
place on opened paper pack resting in hinge crease
place tip at right hand end of paper
take a small pinch of tobacco from pouch
fluff tobacco
put enough fluffed tobacco along paper to be slightly thicker than tip
with thumb and poining finger of left hand pick up paper pack with open smoke sitting on it
gently take fag off pack in a sliding motion with right hand (pointing finger on top of tip, thumb and middle finger under tip nad paper)
put down card paper pack
mirror hand grasp with left hand, pointing finger gently compressing the length of the tobacco
move both poining fingers to back of paper
gently push bottom of paper with thumbs (allow to roll down with fingers) roll between fingers like this a couple of times
push paper over tobacco and tip with thumbs (if you've got nails it helps to make a crease with them)
with pointing fingers roll glued side over top leaving just the glue up
lick and finish the roll

I swear if I had pictures all the above waffle would make sense!

I smoke golden virginia, takes a bit of getting used to, they all do but it does the job!

Hope this lot helps you out

I saw Will Self walking down the Albert Embankment at 8.30 one morning smoking a spliff.

I thought oh yeah, you're sooooo cool, you f**king twat. Shame you can't write.

Divvy · 17/11/2007 08:25

PK....OK.....but...how do you roll a splif?

Pk616 · 17/11/2007 08:45

Divvy,

pretty much the same way, but with a roach instead of a filter tip, with the larger paper and I try to put a bit of a cone on it!

aDadGoneMad · 17/11/2007 08:54

A bit harsh on Will Self ninedragons! I'm sure he wasn't trying to look cool or bothering anyone.

God, we too thought Sobranie were well cool aged 16: Black Russians, Cocktails. I think there were others called Riviera Lights or something?

PK616 describing how to roll is impressive! I wouldn't have known where to start.

And blue/silver rizlas are the way to go!

Bonaventura · 17/11/2007 09:17

Tobacco - I always get it "under the counter" down the market. Usually Samson - costs £5.50 for 50g. Lasts me about a week.
Turner is OK too, but I find Old Holborn a bit too moist, need to suck harder than with the others.

Papers - Always get the green ones. They're just the right thickness. Rizla doesn't stick too well. Swan's are better, but Zig-Zag are the best.

Strangely, when you get used to it, you start to dislike tast of ready-rolled.

I always put the filter in after rolling and sticking. Just roll up a bit of the cardboard from the packet, roll it smaller than you need, pop it in. Being slightly springy, it immediately expands. Perfect fit.

Pk616 · 17/11/2007 09:32

adadgonemad...takes a bow Thankyou, I had to roll one and describe what I was doing to be able to write it though!

bonaventura...Yup you do start to dislike the old tailor mades you used to smoke, I thought that'd never happen and always felt sympathy for rollup smokers offering them one of my swanky factory rolled fags when I could. I never understood why most of them would tell me that they were ok, I thought it was a pride thing!!!

That cardboard "filter" you're describing, that's a roach (sorry that sounds like I've got a right tone of voice on me, can't think of a nicer way of putting it though!)

Wisteria · 17/11/2007 10:03

Has anyone ever tried Buccaneer tobacco - we used to get it in Germany in a yellow tin and it was lush - whisky flavoured and a superb accompaniment to the green herb of wisdom and enlightenment

Divvy · 17/11/2007 10:06

green herb of wisdom and enlightenmentDivvy is begining to wonder how tollerant mumsnet is!

or have people just not read this thread yet?

ninedragons · 17/11/2007 10:37

Harsh, but it was during the late 90s when you couldn't open the Guardian or the Observer without seeing an article by him talking about how arctically cool he was, so at the time I was pretty disposed to think he was a self-promoting twat.

He does, thankfully, seem to have dropped off the radar so now I'd just think lucky you, being able to get ripped at 8.30 on a Wednesday morning.

aDadGoneMad · 17/11/2007 10:55

fair enough - you have 'history' of him annoying you! It's true he was very present for a while.

Bonaventura · 17/11/2007 11:23

Yeah sorry, I should have said "roach" not "filter". Doesn't filter anything does it?
