Calling all smokers who roll their own...............

and before anyone starts, I don't want a debate on the wrongs of smoking, I already know them.

Anyhow, back to the subject.

Since the revelation that DH has the odd cigarette I've also discovered (well he discovered actually as he'd not tried before) that he's pretty good at rolling his own cigarettes. We've decided, since it's a lot cheaper, that he'll roll mine for me too (when I try they come out looking like "gone wrong Cigars that have been cut open on one side" ).

Anyway, at the moment we've just bought a pack of "Golden Leaf" tobacco from the local shop, some slim filters and a pack of green Rizlas.

Now what I want to know is -

What are the differences between all the different papers you can buy to roll your own? (when I bought the green pack there were loads and I bought the green as the lovely shop assistant said that was what most people use).

Are there lots of different types of tips???

What tobacco do you buy - Golden Leaf is ok (and cheap) , but I wouldn't mind spending a little more on some decent stuff given that it works out so much cheaper than buying cigarettes.

Do any of you buy online - and if so from where???

Im suprised at the names on this thread. I had you all down as definitey non smokers!

Tailor mades for me.
But have had baccy in the past. Slimline filters are the only way to go. Papers, well makes no difference really. Unless you buy the brown ones which taste af aniseed i think.

StudentMadwife · 15/11/2007 22:17

Golden virgina is the nicest, old holburn, amber leaf, cutters choice (and more) are made up of "choice blends"...or basically loads of different tabbaccos mixed together. They are more "harsh" than golden virgina.
As for papers, most people use green rizlas for smoking ciggarretes.
As for tips you want to buy swan extra slim filter tips, the others are are bigger and not only use more tabbacco, but you end up with something looking more like a slim cigar than a rollup!

expatinscotland · 15/11/2007 22:18

DH says the blue Rizla papers are shite.

He doesn't like the fat Swan filters.

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:18

ONe of my friends only smokes menthols.

I quite like one every so often, but couldn't smoke them all the time.

When I was younger one of my friends bought some black fags (we thought they were so cool ). Only problem was finding the right end in the dark

Early morning, half asleep taste of burnt filter and wondering why your fag won't light properly is nasty.

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:19

I don't get the liking thick paper thing. Why are you wanting to smoke mainly paper?

expatinscotland · 15/11/2007 22:19

i used to have to be really drunk to smoke menthols.

purpleflower · 15/11/2007 22:20

Amber leaf dries out faster than golden virginia. I buy filters and rizla in pound land, much cheaper. Amber leaf comes with rizla and is slightly cheaper than GV and is a nice smoke.

FIL uses the really long rizla and puts two filters in it so it isn't as harsh on your throught, he makes them in advance and puts them in a fag box, with the two filters they aren't too bad. He uses a rolling machine.

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:20

My friend loves the minty fresh taste

Still makes your breathe smell love.

moondog · 15/11/2007 22:23

Ah, Drum tobacco was my fave.Fond memories of getting utterly wasted sightseeing and relaxing in Amsterdam.

Don't buy a machine to roll 'em for Chrissakes QofQ.That is soooo uncool!!

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:23

we used to use extra long rizlas only for smoking joints.

Silver for those good at rolling - blue for those who were crap.

Highland skins were best but could only get them at market (plus they had card for roaches with funny things written on them).

Have to say I've never seen anyone make an art of rolling fags as they do joints.

LedodgyDickinson · 15/11/2007 22:25

OMG drum is fowl it reminds me of when everyone had ran out of fags and other baccy when we were wasted putting the world to rights.

purpleflower · 15/11/2007 22:25

I remember the days of rolling them as skillfully as you can, then sitting back and admiring them

I know what I would like now

I went to Amsterdam once. Unfortunately it was with a school choir tour and carefully chaperoned.

Managed to get extremely pissed (boy were they generous with their measures of spirits) but never found out what the 'magic tomatoes' sign was about .

moondog · 15/11/2007 22:27

Using filters is uncool too.
Bit of the Rizla packet is all you need.

Surprised that anyone smokes real fags now though.,They cost a bloody arm and a leg!

LedodgyDickinson · 15/11/2007 22:27

haha I knew that didn't look right!

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:28

The creativity that went into making bongs as well.

Our local 'aladins den' shop had lovely sets in wooden, velvet lined boxes, of pipes and small bongs.

I think we may have given ours to the charity shop Possibly not the best idea.

LedodgyDickinson · 15/11/2007 22:28

I know someone who calls filter tips Barbie tampons.

LedodgyDickinson · 15/11/2007 22:29

Ooh we used to make a 'harsh pipe' out of an empty can of beer.

moondog · 15/11/2007 22:30

lol at Barbie tampons.
Who else took their eyebrows and most of their nose off doing 'hot knives'??

nobodyshome · 15/11/2007 22:31

Just a pretty bit o boring information that will cheer up all those who roll their own. As well as being cheaper, they are also better for you than pre rolled as they have fewer additives and preservatives(chemicals) grin

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:31

2 litre coke bottles were our usual. Until one of dp's mates went to an auction adn bought a huge glass jar thing (about the size of 4 demi-johns). That was good, but possibly a bad idea.

ArmadilloDaMan · 15/11/2007 22:32

It was impossible to fill with lung power - they had to get a pump thingy.
